Our 'express' bus to Yangshuo only took 8 hours and evidently included a meal for free, so we were told by a Chinese woman who spoke a little English. At some point between peeing into a trough and comparing buses in the car park to see which was best (ours was of course) we both must have missed out on the no doubt delicious (ahem!) meal. Before we tell you about Yangshuo please do check out our videos. They include, Neil trying an outdoor Chinese gym to an audience of Chinese, holding the camera whilst filming on a bike whilst being lost in Yangshuo countryside and a tranquil moment by the river when 6 boats of tourists arrive with horns blaring! Okay, so we arrived into Yangshuo at 8pm, which is probably not the best time ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou November 12th 2007

We walked to Hung Hom train station in Hong Kong to catch a train to Guangzhou. The train was very good and fast at 2 hours in length but was quite expensive. At some point in the journey we crossed from Hong Kong to Mainland China...we guessed we were in China by the change of building type (ie large grey high rises containing hundreds of apartments) and only Chinese characters on buildings were evident. Guangzhou is not a large city by Chinese standards but with a population of 3.24 million it was no surprise that it had a brand new - but complex - metro system which we had to use to get to our hostel near the river. We had a bit of a problem when buying the metro tickets as they were not tickets ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon November 8th 2007

Our flight landed in Macau, casino capital of Asia so us not being gamblers, or having much money for that matter, we decided to high tail it out of there as soon as possible. A public bus to a ferry terminal and a 1 hour ferry ride took us to the Kowloon area of Hong Kong where we planned to stay for 3 nights. Getting to Hong Kong went very smoothly and as we will write in later blogs, this was typical of most of our transportation around China. Coming from the Philippines it was a huge relief! We had booked ourselves into a hotel at the Chungking Mansions, a favourite with backpackers because the 'mansions' offer some of the best value accommodation in town. Let us tell you that 'mansions' is a gross overstatement for ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Mindoro » Sabang October 4th 2007

Before we start this blog, we'd like to draw your attention to our updated profile section, which we decided to update to reflect our experience of travelling after one year! It all started to go wrong stepping off our flight at Manila airport, we couldn't get to our luggage because there was so many people crowding around the conveyor belt, Donna got her ankles rammed by a woman trying to push in to the exit queue (yes, the exit queue!) and the taxi driver we got decided to take the piss. Every time we get to Manila, it all goes a bit wrong! So the taxi driver decided to drop us off where it was easier for him, he pretended not to speak English and dumped us in a random place which was convenient for him ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Leyte » Tacloban September 26th 2007

We finally decided to drag ourselves away from the beach at Malapascua to head to Leyte so we could catch our flight back to Manila. For some reason we had a crazy idea to travel to Leyte (specifically Tacloban) for a flight, rather than backtrack on ourselves to Cebu and to see a new area of the Philippines. As it turns out this was the funniest and worst journey we had yet done...and we won't be having any more crazy ideas in the near future! On the day we left we were up bright and early (we even had time for breakfast!) before we caught the boat to Maya on Cebu. It seemed silly to us that we had to return to Maya to catch another boat to San Isidro on Leyte, but we went with ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Malapascua Island September 24th 2007

We realise that we've been going on about our transport experiences over the last few of our blogs, but this is because travelling is all we've seemed to have done over the last couple of weeks. To be brief, the non air-con bus got us to the port town of Maya on record time owing to another determined speed demon driver (see the videos)! If anyone is interested the buses leave from 5am onwards from Cebu's Northern bus terminal, not something that is easy to find out! You have to leave Cebu early so you reach Maya around 9-10am so you can join a shared boat to Malapascua island (30 minutes, 40 pesos and 10p for the paddle boat to take you to the big boat). Malapascua is not a big island, you can probably walk ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Cebu City September 16th 2007

...well you won't see Cebu in the pictures as we didn't take any. Our first blog with no pictures and the honest reason why is a combination of 3 things. The first being that where we were staying had a lot of dodgy people hanging around, the second being we were too lazy to take any and the third being that Cebu, like Manila, is not particularly photogenic and most of our time in Cebu was spent experiencing the Philippines various transport options! Our ferry from Siquijor to Dumaguete was again a vomit-fest because of the rough seas and again we 'luckily' secured ourselves 2 benches to escape the nausea. By the time we reached Dumaguete, it was clear that both of us were coming down with a head cold. The 30 minute walk to the ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Siquijor September 14th 2007

...yes, we'll explain the blog title a little later. Our ferry ride to the island of Siquijor made approximately 70% of passengers and crew vomit. We played on the knowledge that Filipinos don't really like to sit next to Westerners (on all other journeys we have been avoided like the plague!) and took a bench each to lie down and sleep through the rough ride! Hee hee how awful are we? Siquijor is a volcanic and lush tropical island surrounded by superstition and intrigue as it is supposedly home to healers/witches with magical powers. Obviously this is bullshit, but we were told that the Filipinos are a very superstitious people and who are we to argue if they think Harry Potter and Sabrina live on the island?! Recently we even saw a Filipino made horror ... read more

Seeings though our last but one blog captured your imaginations...well the title did anyway based on it zooming to the top of our blog hits, we thought we would continue the sex theme in the title, not that this blog has anything to do with sex! We'd also like to say that this blog is a bit of a rant of a blog about a place which really disappointed us! Our flight from Palawan to Cebu went without incident, that is except for a large group of Filipinos (the front half of the plane) who had possibly never flown before and who did not observe any of the safety rules. At the exact time the plane was about to hit the tarmac on landing, 2 of them decided to get up and remove their bags from ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido September 6th 2007

The journey to El Nido We were up bright and early for our journey to El Nido, and only worried slightly when we put our backpacks on the jeepney an hour before we were due to leave and the driver promptly drove off with our bags still in the vehicle, leaving us in the street wondering if he was going to come back! Deciding not to worry we headed to Judy's and had some breakfast, and were relieved to see the jeepney drive past us back to it's starting location. We decided to stop off at the local shop to buy some supplies for the journey ahead of us and were introduced to a boy who made strange shrieking monkey noises and liked to stroke our arms! Sadly, it turns out that the boy had been ... read more
