After a cold, cold wait in Tupiza, sitting near the train station with our 3 quid blanket wrapped around us (acquired in La Paz from Blanket Man) like some sort of homeless people, our bus (sorry, tin can on 4 wheels) arrived at 4am to take us to Villazon, The Bolivian-Argentine border. Note to other travellers when booking tickets at the bus station, try and view the buses on the forecourt first before buying the tickets to ensure that a 1950´s rust bucket piece of shit death trap of a bus doesn´t turn up to take you to your destination! On arrival at Villazon we collected our (now covered in god knows what) bags from the bus cargo hold which had been placed next to several llama carcasses...nice! Maybe this explains why stray dogs have been ... read more

Note that the pics for this blog entry go on for 3 pages! Uyuni and the tour of the Salar Deciding on our next Bolivian detsination wasn´t an easy task. We had originally booked bus tickets to Potosi to visit the silver mines but given Donna´s continuing toilet issues we decided that the confined conditions of mining tunnels would not be the best place to be if you suddenly needed the toilet, especially considering there may be so much methane down there already. So for these reasons we changed our bus ticket to go straight to Uyuni instead and had to travel semi-cama (heaven forbid) for twelve hours. The bus journey wasn´t too bad considering this was Bolivia although the seats didn´t recline too far back and as the bus apporached Uyuni the ride got increasingly ... read more

Copacabana, Bolivia On leaving Cusco it was apparant that the squitz were not going to abandon us and for the 14 hour bus ride to Copacabana in Bolivia, immodium was again our friend and we now own a proportion of the company which makes the tablets! The bus journey was difficult to say the least. Not only was it one of the most likely journeys to get your bag stolen on, but driving high through the Andes we encountered an extreme thunder and lightening storm. We were sat at the very front of the bus and had a birds eye view of a large thunderbolt land not 10 feet away from the bus, this was the only thing that made the bus driver slow down. The bus was very cold, so our next purchase was to ... read more

As you have probably noticed we are in deepest darkest Peru with no sign yet of Paddington Bear. This is quite a long blog entry so bear in mind that it has two pages in content. Our flight from Buenos Aires was an experience, Neil, thinking it was a 3 hours flight because Donna had forgotten about the 2 hours time difference, was shocked at the length of the flight (Donna is officially no good with directions, time differences or flight times!). Our flight was with TACA and this airline has the grumpiest, dodgiest cabin crew we have ever come across (who taught them how to do their make up?). Donna in the first couple of minutes on board managed to have them tut-tutting at her for putting a bag in the overhead locker - where ... read more

Hello again from Argentina!! We did a day trip to the Tigre Delta. The train there was a real experience, 40p for an hours journey, through some really nice areas of BA with gorgoeus houses! On the train a full band joined us playing flamenco music to entertain and there was no shortage of blokies selling things (even toothbrushes for some reason!), all this on a regular commuter train...imagine that going on on Midland Mainline! Tigre was a really nice place, just off the Rio de la Plata and the starting point for the Delta del Parana. It reminded us of Alkmaar in the Netherlands without the cheese market. On coming back from the Tigre Delta we have made a few observations. Here they are! 1) All the backpackers we have seen so far have been ... read more

The bus journey from Rio to Sao Paulo was excellent. A great bus company (Ipatmimim or something). Was very impressed with the reclining seats, free snack pack and really thick Portuguese newspaper (now we know where the Brazilian rainforests are disappearing to). Hanging around in Sao Paulo bus station for the transfer for our flight to Buenos Aires was fun, a little scary but fun nevertheless. Our apartment in BA is located on the edge of San Telmo and is better than most places we have stayed in and for a fraction of the price ($18 a night). One thing we have agreed on is that Donna's sense of direction and map reading skills are very very bad, we discovered this when we arrived and she had us wandering around the rougher part of BA with ... read more

So, 8 days in, some bad experiences and lots and lots of good ones. Considering in our last entry we really weren´t sure of Rio, we can definitely now say that we like it a lot! Over the last few days the entire feel of Rio has changed, it´s a city which changes with the weather. Since the sun came out, there has been a very different feel. More Cariocas (people who live in Rio) on the streets, drinking, eating out at night. Rio is definitely a city which is better in the sunshine! On Tuesday night we had a breakthrough with the food situation. Thanks to Lonely Planet, we tried a ´kilograma´ restaurant. You get a ticket, fill your plate from the buffet (wow, salads, salsas, chicken, beef, rice and more), you then get it ... read more

Our flights to Rio did not go according to plan. Manchester to Heathrow was delayed, BA then parked up at the wrong terminal. We had to wait for buses to escort us to the right terminal which took a long time. Making our way between terminals was not easy...Heathrow is not the best labelled/signposted airport in the world! we only just made it to our flight! Our connecting flight from Sao Paulo to Rio was also delayed due to the cleaners having to come onto the plane and dust between the aisles! Luckily when we arrived in Rio we passed through immigration with no mention of a yellow fever vaccination and instead we were greeted by a woman dressed like she was off to a luxury casino (stilletos and flowing black dress) and a saxophonist playing ... read more

Good news today as Donna finally got news that she was going to be officially made redundant. Its only taken us three years to get this notice and we had to put our lives on hold for the same amount of time. You would think that being made redundant is a bad thing but for us the news was very welcome. It means that there is no going back and the only way forward involves us renting our house and getting onto the plane. Does anyone want to rent a house in Nottingham? We also got our round the world tickets last week which made things seem a bit more real. Flipping heck the ticket books are thick!! Just hope they dont add too much to our baggage allowance. We currently have 14 people (parents, ... read more

Test packing our rucksacks to see if we can fit that extra pair of welly warmers or duds and socks. No Donna...the rucksacks dont have to be 'even'!! Our backs are aching at just the thought of carrying these things. Other backpackers we spoke to say halve whatever you plan on taking and then halve it again....I dont think so! This is the 21st century after all...What would Buck Rogers say??? Packing up the house is one of the worst bits so far...We are convinced that career gappers have a much more difficult time of it than other gappers. We have a list as long as your arm of things to take care of before we go (most are to do with the blooming house)! Both of us are experiencing waves of panic and that bloody ... read more
