Heading to Dundee and the Blood River Battle Monument we hit more construction on the two lane highway. They closed off mile long stretches with only 1 lane open. At the early morning game tour Lee petted a wild lion and still has one hand. Our “lion encounter” included breakfast which we did not realize. Our drive from JoBurg to Nelspruit scared the crap out of me. Signs along the road say, “Do not stop for your own safety”. No one uses cruise control. They speed up, slow down, get in the way, and drift into the middle of the road, even worse than the U.S. One stretch had 4 lanes with a 1 foot rumble strip separating oncoming traffic traveling at interstate speeds - 72mph/120kph. In Kruger Park no one walks but the animals. It’s Disney without animatronics. Live wart hogs, hippos, ostrich, gnu, crocs, giraffe, buffalo, and elephants roam and die freely while we watch from the unairconditioned car. We bounced out of bed at 5. Jock chauffeured at 6. Bus dropped us at O’Hare at 7:40. Skywest flew to Atlanta, in-flight service by Paul Gaylord with the accent on Gay. Our flight from Atlanta was, for airlines, on time. A 20’s native of Johannesburg sat beside me with scary stories of Black Mambas, Boomslangs, Puff Adders, and Johannesburg. He had been attacked in his own neighborhood while running at night.
