My trip to La Rochelle was to be my last road trip while living in France. I went down with two friends I had made in Paris, one stemming from Brittany and the other from Guadeloupe a Caribbean island which is considered as an overseas French territory. We ended up taking about the same amount of time to get out of Paris as we did on the road to La Rochelle, arriving at around 2am. We decided to go out for the night and ended up booking into a hostel at around 10am the next morning. The weather gods were not kind on this trip, with the onset of summer seeming a distant proposal. However between showers we still managed to see the city, another nice one, that I will have to read a book or ... read more

Ok so after the month of May, one of the most amazing of my life, I was expecting to leave Cloud 9. In reality I stayed up in the cosmos and the next weekend I spent way from Paris was in Chartres. Famous for its cathedral I went there with a good friend I had made in Paris from Mayotte a French territory located in the Northern Mozambique channel in the Indian ocean. She was perhaps the most patient and kind of all the French speaking people I met in terms of helping me develop my French whilst there. An English teacher in France, we never once spoke English, aside from when a friend came over from London. The progress I made in French was in large part due to her patience. Anyway, we spent the ... read more

Initially I was a little bit frustrated on setting off for Saint Tropez. It was a beautiful day and I had just managed to time my Toulon walk perfectly if excluding swimming had been the goal, having arrived at the beach at precisely the moment that I had to leave to get to the car that was gonna take me to Saint Tropez. On getting over that, I find myself chatting away to another amicable Frenchman who as it turned out was off to Saint Tropez to act as an extra on a movie that was being filmed there. He was star struck talking about a Monica Bellucci who was the main actress on the film. I hadn't heard of her at the time and it is only now that because I forgot her name and ... read more

After a few days drinking and before setting out for Saint Tropez, I managed to squeeze in a 4hr walk around Toulon. The walk was pleasant and Toulon seemed like yet another French city I could quite happily spend a lot more time in. Unfortunately my time in Toulon was in a way a bit like doing an ice-skating session, just as I was beginning to get a feel of it and about to enjoy the most enjoyable part, i.e the beach, my time/session was over. I also ended up hanging out at the train station when I came back from Saint Tropez. Other than reminding me to watch my step, there's not much to write about as it was in between rides, in the early hours of the morning. Not minding my step meant a ... read more

May 25th 2012

The pattern of the month of May, with my enjoyment inversely related to my bank balance was set to continue with a trip to Riga in Latvia. A long planned trip, I was supposed to spend the weekend there with my friend Andrew and I was going to catch up with the Estonian I had met in Lyon, in Tallin the capital city. I had booked the ticket 3 months earlier and had got a reasonably good price considering it was a long weekend all over Europe and the airlines hike up their prices for such weekends. Anyway I organised my last class for the day so I would have enough time to get there straight from work, but without too much time sitting around. As it turned out this was a mistake as somebody decided ... read more

Èze is a pretty ancient village set spectacularly 427m above sea level at the top of a cliff that I spent an hour or two climbing up to get there. The walk up was definitely the highlight for me, although Èze itself was interesting enough, just a shade to touristy for my liking. The history of the place as per normal is interesting though. I didn´t realise the Moors had gotten as far as there, occupying it for 80 years. I spent 3 or 4 hours walking there and walking around, then I hopped on the bus to Monaco...... read more

I passed through Monaco on the way back from Sanremo with Erin, where we had dinner plus checked out a few things but as it was night time, I decided I should go back to give it a proper whirl. So on my last day after going to Èze, I hit Monaco for another 3-4 hours. Another moneyed place, it offers some interesting attractions but perhaps the most intersting thing that was going on when I was there was the preparation for the following week´s Gran Prix. On the moneyed comment, apparently Monaco has the lowest poverty rate , highest GDP per capita and most millionaires/billionaires per capita in the world. So if you like seeing rich people and what they do with their money its a good place to go. Definitely doesn´t seem like much ... read more

As the legend would have it Saint Honorat, the brother of Sainte Marguerite, set up shop on the island now named after him, around 410. Apparently and understandably he wanted to be a hermit, but was soon followed by various disciples who together began the monastery that still exists on the island today, despite various invasions and power struggles involving the island over the centuries. I went there the second time I was in Cannes, again to escape the madness of the festival and also to learn something about the area. For me the island was stunnng, infact I could have quite easitly stayed there had I had the means to do so. Oozing in tranquility, it is not to hard to see why it houses a monastery and why one would choose to shut himself ... read more

After Menton, we rushed off to Italy to check out Sanremo. We only had a few hours there which was enough time to hit the local markets to buy some Italian produce and visit a restaurant. Other than that, unfortunately I really can´t say much about Sanremo other than I didn´t have enough time there to come up with anything interesting to say about it. It was a cool experience to take the bus/train along the beautiful coastline to Sanremo and it was a treat to take in the coastline of that part of the world. Clearly an area of the world with the money to match its beauty...... read more

Erin had a day off, on the 18th so she kindly took me to Menton, a beautiful French town next to the Italian border. Apart from being stunning, it also has le cimetière du vieux château - the graveyard where William Webb Ellis, rugby's reputed inventor was put to rest. As I had no idea that I would find his grave, it was quite a nice suprise. The cemetery itself has a fantastic view over the Mediterranean that unfortunately I don´t have too many pictures of, as as Murphy´s law would have it I ran out of battery at about the time we arrived.... read more
