I like the name Sofia and after a short time there, the city Sofia came to grow on me as well. Again, I had managed to organise couchsurfing. This time with a relatively well to do IT expert who needs English for her job and thus uses couchsurfing to practice her English. I stayed at her house and she gave me some good suggestions on what to see and do in Sofia. Aside from that I went out on Saturday night and managed to meet some really cool people and have a pretty unforgettable night. On the Sunday we climbed and took the gondola up the mountain that overlooks Sofia, it was a great view on a beautiful spring's day which saw the snow and icicles up the top of the mountain melting at a rate ... read more

Next up was Belgrade. Having found another couchsurfing host, I was in for another treat. Over the three days that I was there, her, her flatmates and her friend, showed me their city and introduced me to Serbian food and alcohol. I arrived in Belgrade at around 6am and my instructions were to get to her house before 7.30am as she had to head off to work at that time. With the help of some really friendly locals, I managed to get to where I was supposed to be. I had arranged to ring her from the post office in her neighbourhood, but on doing so, there was no answer. I tried about 7 times over the next half an hour, but didn't have any luck and thought I was about to have a rare bad ... read more

Cerknica - Carnaval time

March 4th 2011

So after a few hours sleep in Ljubljana, I headed off to check out carnaval in Cerknica. In contrast to the carnaval celebrations the night before, carnaval in Cerknica was much like the Christmas Parade back home in Auckland - just with the theme of the day differeing slightly. Families lined the sidewalks, watching various costume clad groups marching by, with the main happening or theme being a witch, who according to legend is drawn out of the town's lake and then paraded around town. The parade finishes with the witch being safely stowed away until the coming year.... It was very good, but apart from when a few horses bolted loose and charged towards the section of crowd that I was sitting in, I was in a zombie like state that to my shame, probably ... read more

Ljubljana is a city I will never forget. I choose to come to Slovenia because they use the Euro and I thought I'd minimize my bank fees by taking out a much needed cash injection there. It turned out my bank run coincided with carnaval. I had arranged couchsurfing again and this time was staying with a family on the outskirts of Ljubljana, a name I still can't pronounce!!!! The only thing I can say about this family is that they were awesome from start to finish. At the start they invited me to enjoy their homebrew schnapps. After doing so, we (Nina and I) headed off for one of the best Saturday nights I have ever had I would say. It was carnaval and everyone was dressed up accordingly, with all sorts of random costumes ... read more

March 3rd 2011

I felt good arriving in Croatia. I had woken up on the right side of bed so to speak, even though this had consisted of the back seat of the bus. On speaking to the guy at the information centre who spoke fluent English and was extremely helpful, I set off to meet my couch surfing host at a movie theatre. On the way there I came across a massive student demonstration which had apparently been taking place for the past week or so. At this stage I didn't know this of course and was a little bit on edge walking into Zagreb's city centre for the first time to the raucous chanting and banner waving of hundreds of students surrounded by hundreds of military police. They were pretty controlled though and I soon felt at ... read more

March 2nd 2011

Now that I have uploaded the photos for this entry, I'm not really sure why I bothered as apart from walking to the busstation to get the bus to Zagreb I did nothing else in this town. It was snowing heavily and minus 10 degrees!!! I suppose as it is my last entry for Hungary I mars well have one last gripe about the people who work in the train and bus stations. I went to the trainstation in Pecs where I was pleasantly suprised to be served by someone who spoke relatively good English. That lasted all of 20 seconds, which had seen us get passed the greetings stage and establish that there were trains to Zagreb. My next question, saw the attendant shrug her shoulders, roll her eyes and begrudgingly stamp her oversized feet ... read more

March 1st 2011

So after a quick stop over in Debrecen it was back to using Hungary's wonderful transport system. You would think that you would learn the first time. Well I'm not going to bore you going through the details of my 'experience' and the wonderful encounters that I had with the authorities that run Hungary's train system. Suffice to say that there is a movie about a nazi-like eastern european train conductor that should be compulsory viewing for anyone that decides to use this state of the art train system. I eventually arrived in Pecs, where I had a Hungarian English teacher hosting me. A very nice girl, she put me up at her apartment for a few nights, showed me around and otherwise re-instored my faith in the Hungarian race (I had only met train conductors ... read more

February 25th 2011

Cluj Napoca is a city that I had heard alot about before I had got there. As a student city, it is according to many Romanians I met the best party city in Romania. So I was pretty excited to be arriving there on Friday night. I had arranged accomodation through couch surfing again. This time being lucky enough to be hosted by a flat of translators that both knew how to and liked to party. Friday night ended sometime near Saturday afternoon. This is pretty much what I spent my time in Cluj doing and I had such a good time doing so that I was going to extend my stay despite having had made other arrangements. Unfortunately or fortunately, I shall never know, guilt won out and I left Cluj on Saturday night just ... read more

February 25th 2011

Sighisoara is a cool place. I spent the early morning avoiding the cold by attending a mass at a very nice Roman Orthodox church. I think that this was the first Roman Orthodox church mass that I sat through from beginning to end and it really was an interesting experience, as well as a toe thawing one. After that I walked around for a bit and checked out what is a beautifully set city. Sighisoara has only been a part of Romania since the end of World War 1 when it was transferred from the Austro-Hungarian empire. It still has a heavy German influence. The first people to settle there were the Saxons, having been invited by the King of Hungary during the 12th century to settle in Transylvania with the mind of defending his realm. ... read more

Having arranged accomodation through couchsurfing again, I found myself in Sibiu's main sqaure waiting for my host to come pick me up after finishing work. Alexander was his name and sales was his game. He was also a fairly high standing member of the Romanian Orthodox church as I was to soon find out. Unfortunately due to committments I had only one night and day in Sibiu. As Europe's cultural capital in 2007 you should probably allocate more time to the place than I did. However through good fortune god, the universal power, luck whatever you want to call it sent me Alexander along, who had been responsible for hosting European dignataries when they came en masse during 2007 to visit Sibiu. Thus having walked around the city during the day myself, trying to take in ... read more
