| 19th November 2008 Do It Like The Locals | Response to above - From: Triple culture in Kuala Lumpur I don't think we described the Malay as the least populous in Malaysia, nor do we have anything against them or any of the groups. On the contrary, the diversity of the culture in Malaysia is one of the things we appreciate most about the country. |
| 19th November 2008 Decepticon | - From: Triple culture in Kuala Lumpur "KL (like the rest of Malaysia) is characterized by three main cultures and their religions: the Chinese Bhuddist or Taoist, the Indian Hindus, and the Malay Muslims. Seems like you describe the Malay is the least populous people in Malaysia, or you may have issue with them. I think it's better be corrected. |
| 17th November 2008 Anne Clark | You renew good memories - From: Ionian Islandry The Greek Islands were wonderful ... and, as I was kayaking there, I noticed that I never saw a Grecian flag that wasn't flying in the wind. A windy place, challenging kayaking, but the most wonderful people in the world. Thanks for renewing my memories! |
| 17th November 2008 Travelher | Euro-hugger - From: Ionian Islandry I have to admit that I love the Euro Huggers. I just got back from a beach in Florida and I don't know what the point is of wearing boxers followed by 'shorts' that fall almost to your ankles! It's downright Puritan and I think the American look is completely ridiculous (I'm an American). Long live the Euro huggers and may they come back to America soon! |
| 16th November 2008 Terri Smiley | Ouzo and St. Nicolas - From: Ionian Islandry I miss my ouzo and orange juice! They don't serve it on the airlines here. Imagine that! I'll have to stock up for when you guys get to the east coast of the USA. Nico, you may not be a saint yet, but I continue to hear reliable reports that you are one stellar young man! Keep on taking good care of my girl, and you'll both stay at the top of my BEST list! Love, Mom aka MaMa T |
| 5th November 2008 Terri Smiley | The Un-fat Greek Family - From: My Big Fat Greek Family Or is it the Big Phat Greek family? All I can say is that I didn't see any particularly fat people in your family, Nico. And it's a wonder, given the fabulous food and pastries! Great pictures, too. I especially liked the one of Hannah towering above the yiayias "out for a walk with the ladies"...and all looking very stylish! You can be proud of ALL your women! |
| 4th November 2008 Marc | Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiico! - From: My Big Fat Greek Family Haha, I can still remember how your grandmother used to call out your name in her thick greek/italian/ethiopian accent. Tell yaya hello for me. |
| 30th October 2008 Do It Like The Locals | Response to above - From: Delusions and Ego Interesting comment above (not from a friend or family of ours). We been out in the evening in many cities, including Manhattan, Bangkok, even Mumbai. Hire a guide? We prefer the real experience where possible... just an opinion. |
| 30th October 2008 Gunjan | Its perception and the "preparation" done back home :) - From: Delusions and Ego You would not dare to go to a Manhattan alley alone after 7 in the evening, would you? Like all places (including the US of A), you do not, should not, try to be adventurous in certain regions of a country or city. You should have hired a "guide" (he would've "fleeced" you; in Indian rupees, which would still be pocket-change in American dollars) and seen Rajasthan with his help. |

| 7th October 2008 Elias | thank you - From: Exploring our roots in Ethiopia I am an Ethiopian living in London and i just want to express my appreciation for your interest in Ethiopia, a poor but potentially rich country which unfortunately, and may be rightly suffers from bad image. But I found your story nonjudgmental well balanced unlike most travelers who are in the habit of making a mockery of other people's culture and misfortune! thanks for sharing your story any way! |
| 29th September 2008 Blair | Roughing it. - From: Historic Ethiopia Great story Nico as usual. I can't believe your mom is more capable of roughing it than your dad!! Mr. Big game hunter, fisherman, and all around tough guy and his sweet little wife is more adventurous!! Tell your dad he'll never live that one down here at work. |

| 28th September 2008 Terri Smiley | The feeling of Africa - From: Faces of Ethiopia Nico - Thanks for giving me a feel for Africa, through your words, the stories you share, and the photographs. I've always imagined Africa as someplace very foreign and strange, where I would feel completely out of place. Your photo essay has broadened my perspective, and now I, too, have a bit of the feeling your mom describes: "Can't you feel it? It's Africa!" Gotta love it! |
| 24th September 2008 Alanna | - From: Exploring our roots in Ethiopia Oh mann.....I have tears in my eyes after reading this entry. This was really moving and the fantastic pictures say it all as well. I still remember meeting Mary and Lakis in San Diego, along with Yaya and can never forget how unbelievably hospitable your family is. I just got back from trying Ethiopian cuisine for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's unlike anything I have eaten before but so tasty. The blogs are great and I will have to catch up on them again but I am so happy that the family was able to dig into the roots and heritage for it truly contributes to who you are. Also noticed that Peru is a potential future trip on your list. I am trying to book something in October/November timeframe for about 10 days so let me know if that coincides with your plans. Your journey is an inspiration to us all and I hope the messages you share will shed new light for readers who come across your words. |

| 20th September 2008 Terri Smiley | Family roots - From: Exploring our roots in Ethiopia Mary - Thank you so much for sharing your heart and your experiences renewing relationships, cherishing old memories, and making new memories in Ethiopia. You and Lakis' families have a truly remarkable history, and I so appreciate the opportunity to do some armchair traveling with you, and to learn more about your heritage. I can't imagine a better way for Hannah to gain an understandiing of her new family-to-be. What an awesome way to celebrate your 50th birthday (and Nico's too!)!
