In search of Margaret Campbell ...

One of my earliest memories (age 4) is standing at the bedside of my dying grandmother - Margaret Theresa Campbell - and her reaching out to touch my hand. Earlier this year I again felt her reaching out, and knew that I needed to return to her homeland - County Louth, Ireland - to try to bring a part of her spirit home. I'll start with the little that I know, move on to what I speculate, and add some new heritage memories of my own. Blog entries should start on July 24 and update daily as wi-fi access allows. Stop in for the journey as your interests and time allow.

Final day of the trip - and what a wonderful ending. My lovely hotel is about a 20 minute walk to the Dublin Zoo, with a charming Victorian Tea Cottage along the way. Both are located in Phoenix Park, a huge complex of sporting fields, gardens, walkways, and the zoo. They claim that it is twice the size of Central Park in New York, but not how it relates to Lincoln or Grant Parks in Chicago. Whatever the case, it is pretty vast. I started the day with scone and tea at the Tea Cottage, then went to the zoo. When it comes to zoos, I feel pretty spoiled and a bit jaded after growing up with Lincoln Park and Brookfield Zoos. I was impressed with the Dublin Zoo. It is an old zoo - the ... read more

Internet in Doolin was marginal at the guesthouse. It was better at the pubs, but I didn't feel that that was the best place to sit and blog. Anyway, there are several days worth of entries now uploaded, and I've added more pictures to earlier accounts if you're curious. Most entries have extra pictures below the text - past the ads. The car needed to be returned to the Budget office by 11 a.m., so I left Doolin before 7 to give myself plenty of time. The morning was chilly and rainy - stayed that way all day. It took close to an hour to get out of the country terrain, but from before Limerick to Dublin it is all 4 lane divided highway. Pure heaven! I approached Dublin at just after 10 and felt quite ... read more

Today I went to view the Cliffs of Moher from the top. This is a place of wild majesty. The cliffs are the highest in Europe, towering over the water - dropping dramatically into the sea. This has been a popular attraction for a long time, and one that has been dangerous (even deadly) to those whose sense of adventure outruns their common sense. It is a very long way down if you fall. The site has been developed into one that manages huge numbers of tourists (the Cliffs of Moher is on almost every west country bus tour itinerary) with efficiency, safety, and a sense of respect for the location itself. There are broad, stone-paved walkways with an barrier wall that keeps tourists securely from the ledge without limiting the views of the cliffs. (Of ... read more

Before leaving Killarney in County Kerry, I stopped to visit Torc Falls, a beautiful waterfall just a short walk off the road. This is close enough to Killarney proper that it would not be unreasonable to think that Margaret Campbell, if she visited Killarney, would have taken a horse carriage (they call them jaunty carts) ride out to the falls. I am sure that she would have been as moved as I with the beauty and power of the cascading waters. It is Sunday, so I went to Mass at Killarney Cathedral. Sitting in this majestic stone structure, it came to me that Margaret Campbell would probably have come here to pray, too. I said an extra prayer for her - and all who have come from her. Back on the road. Getting from Killarney to ... read more

Most guides list the Dingle Peninsula among the 10 most beautiful places on earth. It is smaller than the neighboring Ring of Kerry, and has less developed roads. There are very few tour buses on the Dingle Peninsula, and areas where none would dare to venture. Armed with confidence from my drive around the Ring of Kerry, I ventured onto the Dingle Peninsula. Initially, the roads were good - good meaning that there were two lanes wide enough to warrant a painted line down the middle. This went on for a while, then the dividing line disappeared as the road narrowed and it became necessary to use caution negotiating past oncoming traffic. In time, at points, the road narrowed to a single lane - but the traffic remained two-way. Where it got insanely narrow, there were ... read more

County Louth is at the northeast corner of the Republic of Ireland. County Kerry hugs the sothwestern coast. Most of the drive from Dundalk in County Louth to Killarney in County Kerry is on good highways - a lot of them divided. The speed limit is posted in kilometers, so it is a bit unnerving to see the limit set at 120 kmh - which translates to about 75 mph. I rarely got brave or impatient enough to get to the limit, and was passed a lot- which was fine with me. Getting closer to Killarney, the roads got narrower but the speed limit didn't drop much. I got passed a lot more often. Stopped for lunch at the Blue Door Cafe in a delightful town called Adare and ate in their curbside patio across from ... read more

In researching for this trip, I learned about a World Heritage Site called Newgrange, located roughly half way between Dublin and Dundalk. It is a man-made mound with an inner chamber that pre-dates the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge in England. I thought that it was worth a visit. Wow! The visit experience could have justified the entire trip. I had read that tours can fill up for the day during the summer, so I headed over to the site first thing this morning. You can't go directly there, but have to start at a visitor center. At the center a receptionist asked if I wanted BOTH the Newgrange and Knowth tours - obviously I had not researched this place carefully enough. I took both. We started at Knowth, which was built after Newgrange, but is ... read more

Good direct flight from O'Hare to Dublin. Left on time - arrived early - had nice college age couple as seatmates - even the journey through customs wasn't long or trying. Very pleasant start to the trip. Rented a car from Budget - once again quick and easy. It's a Nissan MICRA - and it is tiny. Considering the narrowness of the roads, that is a BIG plus. Driving on the left side of the road is not really a hard adjustment. Trying not to scrape the side curb on back roads, or swipe parked cars, is the big challenge for me. I did get 100% zero deductible insurance on the rental, so I'm not too worried. The road from Dublin to Dundalk is very direct. I took a diversion through Dunleer and Ardee on the ... read more
