Detroit

This is my first time creating a blog....so we'll see how it goes and how often I updated it. I'm currently 24 years old, grew up in the dirty D! (not really...I grew up in the Detroit suburbs), graduated from the University of Michigan Business School (undergrad) and have been working for Target Corportation Headquarters for the past two years in Minneapolis. I decided recently to pursue a desire to live abroad for an extended period of time and am heading to Buenos Aires, Argentina on Monday August 20th. This blog should serve to chronicle my adventures.

okay....so this will be my last blog entry as I am leaving South America today! I realize that I haven´t written too much or much of anything interesting for that matter....but I never really was one to write in journals, etc. I also don´t have much time now but will definitely miss Buenos Aires. It is an amazing city with a lot of things I loved (sitting and drinking coffee on a nice day) and a lot that I hated (traffic, dog shit on the sidewalks). My spanish is actually leaps and bounds better now also ;)....well I´ll have someone else judge that. Even more though, I made some truly great friendships here that will last me a lifetime. Those are what I value the most and were the most unexpected part of my trip. For ... read more

I hope everyone in the US enjoyed Thanksgiving! I missed out this year obviously as it is a US holiday and my friends here are all from Europe or South America. I also had somewhat of a hard time explaining why exactly we celebrate Thanksgiving....I mean I know all about the pilgrims and things you learn in grade school, but what historical signifigance does Thanksgiving really have to the United States? Instead, the day after I went with 4 Norwegians to Iguazu Falls in the northern part of Argentina on the border with Brazil. The falls were absolutely spactacular and we were able to take a boat ride on the Iguazu river and into the falls. I will post a link for pictures in the next couple of days because it is very beautiful. There´s not ... read more

All anyone ever talks about these days here is the price of tomatoes....and how expensive they are! Since I arrived here the end of August, the price of tomatoes has pretty much tripled and well as an increase in other vegetables. Meat, however, has stayed at the low low price of about $5 for a good piece of meat at the grocery store. And let me tell you, I have eaten more red meat here than I think I have in the previous 23 years of my life! This all just shows how absolutely crazy the economy is here. The government regulates exactly what meat can be sold for and makes sure about 90% of all meat produced hear stays in the country through export taxes. Im not sure why the price of vegetables is sky-rocketing ... read more

Buenos Dias! The last week I took a trip to the province of Salta (nothern part of Argentina) to help with the opening of an archeoligical museum 11,500 feet in the mountains. It was a great experience so I am going to tell you all about it! I left Buenos Aires last Saturday at about 8 oclock pm for a 20 hour bus ride north to the city of Salta. Now when I say bus, I don´t mean a crappy old greyhound bus. The long distance buses in Argentina are like traveling first class in an airplane (almost). The seats are large and comfortable; breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided; and movies are played every couple of hours. Due to this fact, my ride was rather enjoyable and I slept during most of it. Sunday afternoon ... read more

Well spring has officially been underway here for a few weeks now and I am beginning to love the city and culture a little more each day. The weather right now is currently very nice, not too hot and not too cold. However, when it rains......it RAINS! All day long and there is no escaping it because I have to go outside to get things accomplished. The beginning of the month I moved into a new place in an area of the city called Barrio Norte. It is a very nice barrio (neighborhood) with everything I need very close. I am renting a room from a women who is in her 40s or 50s but one of the nicest people I have ever met. She dances tango, and has two daughters whom I met today. One ... read more

Hello everyone! I know it's been a little while since I've created a blog entry but there is a good reason for that.....my computer broke! (On top of many other things that went wrong over the last couple of weeks.) Two weeks ago I was basically in an awful mood because it rained non stop for seven days, my computer stopped working, I caught a cold and was sick for a week, I don't really like the place I am living in now, and my project (the reason I came here) was NOT going how I expected. However, things are MUCH better now and I am looking forward to spring/summer here. So here is a recap of the past couple of weeks: Volunteer Job..... My Spanish classes ended and I could finally start working with the ... read more

So the last two weeks, what has happened....... I basically finished up my Spanish classes. I have one more tomorrow which will be the last.....I may continue for another week or so but I'm not too sure now. Saturday morning I met with the organization that I am going to be working with, "El Ceibo Palermo" which I am very excited to start. However, as with everything here, things are slow to get going and I am still waiting on a schedule for that. Realistically I don't think they will be ready for another week :(.....but hopefully sooner. You can type "El Ceibo Palermo" into a google search and there are articles about it. I have also met some really fun people.....a few people from Colombia and others from here who work in at an AOL ... read more

Okay..... Well apparently I've been informed that the building in one of my last pictures is the Buenos Aires Law School...:). Now that is out of the way, here is my take on the food/dining experience here. Let me first start by giving you my eating habits in the US. I don't cook very well so I was used to eating out pretty much every meal. Breakfast always consisted of a glass of orange juice, vitamin, maybe nutrigrain bar if there was time, and a coffee on the way to work. Lunch I always purchased at the one of the multitude of quick lunch places that exists in the US and dinner was either something frozen from the freezer, something I could make easily such as pasta, or (80% of the time) going out to eat ... read more
