Hi - I'm finalizing 4 months of travel in Portugal. In fact, I'm in my last 2 days here. I started in Lisbon, then rented a car and drove north to see the ancient towns of Sintra and Obidos, south to the Algarve, and back to Lisbon. Photos attached. When I arrived in Lisbon on 9th December, the place was full of sirens escorting VIPs around the downtown area. Right on their heels were demonstrators complete with banners, jugglers, and marching bands. What was up? The Lisbon Treaty to amend the EU constitution which also contained some votes regarding trade with Africa (see http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/10/world/africa/10summit.html) As a very old town (the castle on the hill in Lisbon was originally a Moorish castle from the 6th century), the town has some really charming old buildings and narrow little ... read more

Hi - Greetings from Barcelona and Mallorca! Dex joined me this week for some land travel in these two beautiful parts of Spain. We started in Barcelona, a city just overflowing with art. Even the graffiti is great! It's a wonderful town to visit because it's so easy to get around, everyone is very friendly and helpful, and there's so much to see. Strolling down La Rambla is always fun with street artists, performers, and vendors selling art, flowers, birds, food - you name it. No trip to Barcelona is complete without a pilgrammage to a few Gaudi sites, so we visited the Segrada Familia temple (under construction since 1882 and a long way from finished) and Park Guell to see these examples of his architectural works of art (see map). We then took a quick ... read more

Changing of the guard

Hi - Well, today is my last day in Gibraltar. No more sailing for a while. To commemorate my departure, the town held a changing of the guard ceremony down Main Street (see photo). Since I wrote last, it's been local sailing only, so I have few photos. Instead, here are some fun facts about Gibraltar: The word "gibberish" comes from the language spoken by Gibraltarians - a mixture of Spanish and English that is unintelligable by either Spanish or English native speakers. One can pick out a Spanish or English word or two, but that's about it. In ancient times, Gib was the end of the known universe (it's still that way for some of the locals, I think) and the Rock was one of the pillars of Hercules. Hence, the many references to the ... read more

Hi - Happy November! Since Gib is a centuries old military fortress, there are centuries old veterens here to celetrate their Day. Attached is a photo of some vets as they end their parade in Gib's Irish Town. Sailing and more sailing since I wrote last. Most of it has been in Gibraltar Bay and nearby, so not many photos of new places. Some attached photos show Ceuta, a Spanish town in Morocco (analogous to British Gibraltar in Spain). Ceuta is just across the Straits from Gib and this week was the first time I've seen it in daylight. We often go there at night because it's good practice for recognizing ships' lights and angles as they bear down on us. We're out of the traffic separation zone and, if sailing, the stand-on vessel, but ... read more

Hi - We just arrived back in Gib today after a 2-week training voyage to southwest Spain and Portugal. Training was pretty tough, but it was great to see the little towns along the way. I've attached several photos of the trip. We started by sailing from Gib to Rota in the Bay of Cadiz (Spain). From there, we stopped in Ayamonte (Spain) and Via Real de San Antonio (Portugal). Ayamonte and Vila Real are on the river Quadaquiver (?) which creates the border between the two countries. We had the best meal ever in a tiny restaurant on a narrow street of Ayamonte - no menu, just pick what you see has been prepared that day - for us it was great fish and tomato salads. We visited the Portugese towns of Portimao and Lagos ... read more

Hi - A quick note to say hello and send a few photos from our sailing last week and my walk up the Rock this morning. The photos aren't in any particular order. Smir is a town in Morocco about a 30-40 mile sail from Gib. We stayed there one night in the marina, then sailed another 30-40 miles across the Med to Estapona in Spain where we stayed another night, then back to Gib. This morning, I walked up the Rock to check out the views and see the famous Gibraltar monkeys. Not much time to write as our boat is preparing for a 2 week mile/skill building trip to Portugal beginning tomorrow. More photos when we get back to Gib. Take care, Deirdre... read more

Hi - I'm in Gibraltar now - have been for about 10 days. It's been really busy with navigation classes and studying, so I really haven't had time to look around much and take photos. Gibraltar is an odd mix - British with a nice Southern European feel. Very relaxed. It's not clear what goes on here other than the marinas, a bit of banking and a lot cafe eating and drinking. I've attached a photo of the marina and a few shots of The Rock. I had a chance to walk across the border into Spain - a little town called La Linea that is pretty forgetable. One night several of the sailing students went there for tapas and had a good time. We also had a sea survival course one hot Saturday, so the ... read more

Greetings from Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef - What a nice change! Dry and hot. Now anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a fan of dry and hot, but after a month of cold and wet, it's great! Exmouth is a tiny town about 1000km north of Perth. It was originally established as town to support a US Naval communications base. The base is still here and is shared by US and Australia. Like all Western Australia towns, there's nothing to do, but the surrounding scenary is really nice. I've hired a mountain bike and am riding all over - mostly in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the real heat of mid-day. Those are great times to be out in the "bush" anyway, since that's when the critters come out. I took ... read more

Hi there - The last week has been busy delivering the boat I've been sailing on from Fremantle (Freo in Aussie speak) to Busselton about 120 miles south. It was good chance to catch on some of the sail time I've missed (due to bad weather). Since it was just me and an instructor (with one extra crew on one day), I got some skippering time, passage planning/nav experience and lots of helm time. It was good experience, good wind with the occasional heavier stuff, big swells and squalls - but that's just an average day this time of year. At least with all the rain, there are lots of rainbows! I've included the photos I mentioned in the last blog in which I attempted to catch the whales - one flipper wave and a shot ... read more

Hi - It's been some time since I've written. Sorry for the radio silence. The weather here has been crazy and unpredictable. On a two-day sail, the first was so calm and sunny that we had to motor the whole day (however, we saw humpback whales, and one even swam under the bow!). The next day was stormy with big wind, swells and rain. After arriving in Fremantle, the gale force warning was in and we couldn't even stick our nose out of the harbor. Oh well, Fremantle is a nice town to be stuck in. The Fremantle Sailing Club facilities are very nice. The town has the feel of a college town with little cottages and tiny front gardens full of flowers and little shops everywhere. Quite a difference from Bunbury where I was based ... read more
