| 23rd October 2006 Suzanne | Santorini photos - From: Santorini photos Once again - fabulous shots Dee ! Makes my painting hand buzz !! I had thought you would be staying over there quite a bit longer. It was certainly a great trip - NZ always seems a lot further away when I fly back than when I left to go !! |
| 23rd October 2006 Suzanne | More Santorini photos - From: More photos from Santorini thanks Dee - some absolutely stunning shots you captured - it is a fabulous vista, no wonder it is so popular. |
| 3rd October 2006 Jeff | Good to hear - From: Still alive ........that you are having fun. Looking forward to hearing about it when you have time. So you are leaving Greece on Sat? The boys will be over the moon to see you again! |
| 26th September 2006 Jeff | Hi - From: Born to Ride Sounds like you are having a great time. Aren't bikes a great way for sightseeing! You are 'in' the sights much more than with a car. |
| 23rd September 2006 Suzanne | Thunder - From: Thunder in Santorini I know exactly what you mean - I experienced that kind of thunder in Zagreb - (during the war time ! )- and yes it does wake you with a start and you think "bombs!" Brisbane has similar thunder storms that come out of nowhere. Being on your own can be a bit tough - there is nothing like sharing a trip with a friend - or partner, or as you did, with your brother. Most of those popular places do cater for the tourists because that is their big income especially for the locals - and when the tourists are gone things are quite different. |
| 20th September 2006 Suzanne | Santorini - From: Santorini Just catching up with your Greek stint. Wow - sounds like you are having a load of fun and its a plus that its just as you expected it would be! Looking forward to your photos! |

| 12th September 2006 Nat | Grapes diet !^$!*)#!! - From: Oh my god I"m finally here skip the grapes and go straight to the cheap greek wine and drink buckets :) .. actually I think the Ouzo is way cheaper. You must to the compolsory breaking of a plate over your head > followed by an Ouzo chaser ! Enjoy |
| 11th September 2006 Little Bro | Experience - From: Oh my god I"m finally here Sounds like a good learning experience! We look forward to hearing more. |
| 10th September 2006 Suzanne | Last Swedish blog - From: Last Swedish blog Hi Dee - know what you mean about scary roads - Zagreb was similar - trams and cars on the same track - an experience that takes some getting used to - also going around the arc de triomphe in Paris. Greece already ! You really are travelling around! Looking forward to reading your reports from there. |
| 10th September 2006 Nat | Whizz - From: Last Swedish blog ..ig vehicles aye !. Nothing like pumping blood, checking a zillion times left and right. Good for the neck muscles - who needs a gym !! Love the Public Art. My 2 Art Advsiors would adore these pics :-) Did you get down to Malmo ? Greece here you come - WAHOO !! |
| 9th September 2006 Ian | Crossing the Road - From: Last Swedish blog Sounds like a career opportunity for a Walking Bus coordinator in Gothenburg |
| 8th September 2006 Auntie Lin Lin | - From: Gothenburg Archipelago Some people are shoe fetishists, some are obviously window fetishists... :-) Good that we're all different! The archipelago is a wonderful and peaceful place. Just a tram ride away and you're in a quiet relaxing environment! (By the way, the Swedish word "bad" actually means "swimming place".) |
| 7th September 2006 Suzanne | Gothenburg Archipelago - From: Gothenburg Archipelago What a contrast to the touristy hustle and bustle of Croatia - the peace sounds like heaven but must be very isolated in winter. I wonder how the wheelbarrow and bike-cart idea would catch on in Waiheke Island or Great Barrier ?! |
| 5th September 2006 Suzanne | Split photos - From: Split Photos Fab photos Dee !! See you caught the new boutique embedded in the walls of the ruins! and doors that go nowhere. |
| 5th September 2006 Suzanne | More Dubrovnik Photos - From: More Dubrovnik photos Hi Dee - You can see in these photos the old and - many - new roofs. I really loved the old ones for my paintings - did them several times - and many of these shots you've taken would make great painting material!! |
| 5th September 2006 DeefromNZ | Hey Des - From: Dancing on Hvar Actually you are right, it would have been much better with a partner to really showcase the Ceroc moves. Most of the guys I managed to get to do a little Ceroc with, rather quickly got over whelmed by it and didn't want to do it for long. I can totally understand that as I've been in that position myself. And of course it wouldn't have helped that they didn't understand what I was saying. |
| 4th September 2006 Des | croatia here I come... - From: Dancing on Hvar it all sounds fantastic Dee..I was going to suggest in an earier comment that you needed a partner to showcase some ceroc moves for all those exuberant young people, but you clearly have no need for that!!! Keep up the fun .. |
| 3rd September 2006 DeefromNZ | Hi Marie - From: Heaven is Hvar Great to hear from you. Hope all is well. |
| 3rd September 2006 DeefromNZ | Hey Nat - From: Dubrovnik Photos Glad you are enjoying the blogs and pics. You would totally love it here in Croatia. The vibe, especially in Hvar is amazing. More pics and blog to come. |
| 3rd September 2006 Nat | Star - From: Dubrovnik Photos .... fish > go you !... Wot a whale of a time you are having - totally oarsum. (NO, no inference intended) These pics are just magic Dee. Feels like I am right there with you....wunda-fill (not to be confused with wonda- bra :-) Keep havin fun you ! ...and keep the pics coming too |
| 3rd September 2006 Suzanne | Dubrovnik photos - From: Dubrovnik Photos Hi Dee - Some really great photos you've taken ! About the photo you labelled "bomb damage" - no, that was not recent bomb damage (which was 15 years ago) - they are just old ruins. Actually the very old city of Dubrovnik was hit by a massive earthquake in 1667 and almost destroyed (much of it fell into the sea). Almost all the bomb damage that occurred in the early 1990s has been fantastically repaired! When you walked around the walls you would have seen hundreds of lovely orange-red roofs - each new roof is a testimony to the bomb that fell on it. During the bombardment of Dubrovnik in December 1991, by the Serbs and Montenegrins, and the subsequent one year siege, Dubrovnik was hit by about 600 shells. About 45% of the buildings were damaged -708 receiving direct hits and 10% guttered by fire. the Franciscan monastery was hit 60 times and the Dominican 20 times. The walls received extensive damage - but it was all sandblasted and repaired to the exact specifications of the original (all repairs had to be in keeping with the period of the architecture). |
| 1st September 2006 Marie | Catching up on your exploits ... - From: Heaven is Hvar Hi Dee, Have just caught up on your blog. You've certainly had an interesting time! It's the first day (night, actually) of Spring back here, and has been reasonably warm for a change, although it's due to blow a gale tomorrow! I don't know how you could stand that heat! I had mild sunstroke in Brisbane out in the 35 degree sunshine at Australia Zoo! Glad you're having a ball, and looking forward to your next post in the blog. |
| 29th August 2006 Suzanne | Hvar is lavender - From: Heaven is Hvar Haven't heard you mention yet the LAVENDER - which Hvar (and Brac) and well known for - you would have to get a trip out into the countryside - but the road out of Hvar town is narrow, high (with a steep drop!) Anyway sounds like you are having heaps of fun in the town!! |
| 29th August 2006 Malin | - From: In Hvar Hi!!!! I have read all your journals and it looks like you're having a fantastic time! Looking forward too see all the pictures. Hope the rest of your holiday will turn out great. Hugs to you and Jeff from your host in Stockholm |
| 27th August 2006 DeefromNZ | For Suzanne - From: Spitting in Split We had a lovely time in Split even though we were only there for one night. Yes we did the basement catcombs and yes they were totally amazing!! I have tonnes of photos of exactly what you mention, the old and the new together, people living and working amoung the ruins of the Palace. The other great thing about Split, and now Hvar Island is that it is more relaxed than Dub was and there are no touts anywhere trying to force you into their resturant etc. |
| 27th August 2006 des | ceroc.... - From: Still in Dubrovnik good for you...not so sure I would b game to do spins by myself on the glazed stone!! Have you managed to do any dancing yet...you seem to be having a great time...mmmmthe women sound interesting too...is it true there is an imbalance of men to women? ( more women than men?) Havfun Des |
| 26th August 2006 Suzanne | Storm in Split - From: Spitting in Split Yes Dee, Dubrovnik is fabulous - but Split has to be one of the most fascinating places - it is unique. You will see the new embedded into the ruins of the ancient! They live, work and eat around, in and under the walls of the old Roman Diocletian palace. I love the cafe in the remains of the old forum and the absolutely modern boutique built into a ruined something. Doors appear high on the walls, shutted up and going nowhere and windows are nitched alongside archways. The locals are all part and parcel of what remains of this living, breathing ancient palace. The old cannot be destroyed but it can be used, lived in and attached to. And it works. Fabulously! Don't forget to explore the catacombs below the cathedral and if you can, go and see Soline - the ancient ruins just out of the city! It is good you've had some rain - it will keep the scrub fires away! We've seen on the TV that Greece has been having a bad time with fires this summer. |
| 24th August 2006 Auntie Lin Lin | - From: Eating out in Dubrovnik It is so nice to read your blog! Sounds like you are having a wonderful time. I wish I could have been there with you... Here in Gothenburg it has been thunder and heavy showers just about every day since you left. Hope it will be better by the time you return. Looking forward to seeing lots of photos! |
| 24th August 2006 Nat | SSS - From: Eating out in Dubrovnik Hej ! Special Silver Service - WAHOO for that Dee. Was the watiter nice looking to boot ?! Be nice to see a pic of that fab' restaurant. You must be tannin' up quite nicely - getting your southern whitish complexion a bit more in cholocate pastel mode. I would have 40 degrees over 4 degrees anyday ! ENJOY :-) Adjo Nat |
| 24th August 2006 DeefromNZ | The girls - From: Still in Dubrovnik Yes Girish the girls here are gorgeous, and very very thin. I think they are thin because they all seem to smoke. Everyone here seems to smoke. |
| 23rd August 2006 Girish | howz the girls - From: Still in Dubrovnik dee, howz the girls in croatia????beautiful..... |
| 22nd August 2006 DeefromNZ | Thanx Suzanne - From: More on Dubrovnik I will try to remember everything you have suggested. Hugs to you too. Despite the hic up re eating out I still adore it here. It is just so me........even with the heat. |
| 22nd August 2006 DeefromNZ | Hi Helen - From: Stockholm Photos Dont know who you are but thanks for your comment on my photos. I just wish I had more time to put more on the blog site. I have taken hundreds. |
| 22nd August 2006 Helen | Swede in NZ - From: Stockholm Photos Ahh...Your sthlm photos bring me back home, that summer feeling. Battling rain and wind here in Wellington, and its snowing in Dunedin, so enjoy that weather. |
| 21st August 2006 Suzanne | Dubrovnik II - From: More on Dubrovnik You are rapidly learning about the good and the bad! The Croats are wonderfully hospitable people - but they've learnt terrible "communist" habits and can't shake them off! They think everyone is from "America" (even if you're from NZ - and that we've all got HEAPS of money falling off the trees! - so ripe for the fleecing !) They are VERY un-PR when it comes to shopping - "good sevice" and "service with a smile" is something most are still miles away from learning about! And don't rely on ferry or bus times - they are still learning "responsibility to the public" in that area! Go for cevapcici (they are very tasty little sausage shaped minced beef & onion mix - which should (always!) come with a good salad and chips! Also you will see that most of the locals drink BAVANDA - thats local "table wine" usually pretty good - into which they put a LOT of cold water - much more thirst quenching and cheaper ! And fish can be VERY expensive - so beware! The yogurt is GREAT - try that! and also the palachinkas (crepes - they make great ones -try them with cherry jam and walnuts!) For lunch go for PRESUT (pr-shoot)- that's like prusciotto - (of course the Italians copied them!) - but it is inexpensive and great on the baguettes with a good beer ! Every home serves it to guests with their own great homemade wine - in a Pepsi bottle. Oh - and BTW did I tell you? This is the country where nude bathing has been practically the norm ! You will find it in many places ! hugs, Suzanne |
| 20th August 2006 Suzanne | Dubrovnik - From: Delightful Dubrovnik!!!!!!!! Oh, how your words bring back such memories ! I feel I am there with you - have you noticed the strong scent of pines and that musty smell of the yellow flowers on the broom bushes that cover the hillsides ? And oh that so blue, so clear clear sea ! You will LOVE walking the walls - but allow at least a couple of hours - and stroll the stradum (main central street) in the evening with the crowds - and then get a meal of cevapcici !!! The driving there is suicidal - they are STUPID drivers, speed is senseless - and they don't wear seatbelts. So take care. |
| 18th August 2006 Suzanne | Booze - From: Buying booze How absolutely bizarre - as you say! And what sacrilege to the art of chosing a bottle of wine! Hard to believe that such a practice can exist in Europe. Do hope your flight to Croatia goes smoothly ! Hugs, Suzanne |
| 17th August 2006 DeefromNZ | Camera memory stick - From: Stockholm Photos Hey Nat, I have two 1 GB memory cards for my camera. But so far I have been able to use a computer to download the pics then write them to disk. I doubt I will be able to post any photos of Croatia until I get back to Gothenburg. |
| 17th August 2006 DeefromNZ | Smiles - From: Train trip to Stockholm Yes indeed Nat, lets hope more smiles bring more of the same..... |
| 17th August 2006 Nat | Svenska Sites - From: Stockholm Photos Oh the memories !...rushing back thick n fast. Just wondering how big you dig cam memory stick is Dee ? or are you downloading to disc ? Had pancakes on a Thursady yet ? Learnt any pick up lines in Swedish ? :) |

| 16th August 2006 SS | bring some of those goodies home... - From: In Stockholm the tall single ones would be most appreciated given the dearth of male talent back in NZ! |
| 16th August 2006 Suzanne | Old costumes and quaint all towns - From: Vallby in Vasteras That must have been a great visit - especially with all the people decked out. Don't know too much about the deposit in the pot - that could be TOO realistic. |
| 15th August 2006 Corinna | Looks like your having a great time!! - From: Vallby in Vasteras Jaibyn liked the photo's of the rabbits. It has been damn cold here, so we are really jealous looking at your photo's of the warm weather & all the wonderful sights you are experiencing. Still getting grief from you know who & it is going to get worse, as its moving back in with slapper. But that is enough of that, don't need to dampen your spirits not that it will. Continue to drink & be merry. You will have to have a drink on Monday the 21st, as I will be for my 36th!! Take care & look forward to receiving future emails!! Corinna |
| 14th August 2006 Auntie Lin Lin | Deposit??????? - From: Vallby in Vasteras Deposit?????? I thought it was called POOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Can just see you in a "Period' Costume Dee - WAHOO ! and of course swinging off the end of a vino or three ..mindful of getting to the liquor outlets in plenty of time. A well stocked cabinet is truly vital :) Very authentic pics and the essence of international travel - visiting those small spots that truly reflect the real culture, activities, infastructure and peoples that live there - GO you ! |
| 13th August 2006 Nat | Hell in hell-sin..key :) - From: Ship cruise to Helsinki Wonderful stuff Dee ! - feels like I am right there with you, right on your back heel. Your boat cruz reflections and pics take me way back to 1995 when I did the same trip - so was it red wine instead of the rocket fuel 100% proof absolute Vodka ? !. Either way, keep havin' a blast g/f ..and keep snappin and scribbin'. |
