Happy New Year from a Prague that until recently was buried under several inches of thick winter snow - all pretty and romantic for about the first five minutes, until you realize that you have to battle your way through the resultant slippery slush on your way to work every morning… Thank God so many people gave me warm clothing for Christmas is all I can say - all those scarves and gloves and warm socks etc are definitely coming in more than handy now, believe me…. ;-) Luckily for me the weather had already warmed up a bit though by the time New Year’s Eve rolled around yesterday (nothing worse than trying to celebrate in the tit-freezing cold), and in fact this year’s festivities ended up being some of (if not the) best ever ... read more

Strange to say, but in recent weeks I’ve gradually come to the realization that I am in fact starring in my own personal episode of Sex and the City, with myself unexpectedly cast in the archetypical Sarah Jessica Parker role. Think about it - I’m a single, professional, independent woman living in the Big City (know Prague is not quite New York, but still…), who goes out every single night, is hopelessly addicted to cigarettes and Cosmopolitans, never cooks, only sporadically cleans, and needless to say has an incredibly hectic and turbulent (but at the same time ultimately unfulfilling) love life! This week has thank God seen a full return to form on all fronts, with work going well (suddenly have plenty to do and am being marked highly on all of it!), the sun making a welcome reappearance after weeks of undiluted grey and - best of all - two days off work this week to make the most of this unseasonably warm and spring-like weather! Happily the week had got off to a good start anyway, with a nice but overpriced curry out on Monday with Alethia (during which we agreed on a hardline strategy in defending our laptops against Elena’s constant and increasingly annoying requests for personal use), drinks with Mariam on Tuesday (not quite as hedonistic as our first spectacular outing, but still fun), pizza and wine with Helen at an upmarket ... read more

Having lived and worked once already for a year in Koblenz, I know from personal experience that it’s only when you move away from home that you find out who your true friends are and which of your family members loves you the most (the ones who visit you first and most often, naturally!). Hence it came as no surprise to have my mum over as my first official visitor this weekend - a twofold highlight of my time in the Czech Republic so far, as not only did I get to see my lovely mum, but she also brought my laptop, DVD collection, cafetiere and the rest of my (urgently needed) clothes out with her, not to mention a couple of unexpected but highly appreciated books and magazines into the bargain! Two weeks down the line and things are marginally more stable than at the last count - am still chronically overspending / overeating / overdrinking and smoking like a fucking chimney at the moment, but at least to a slightly lesser degree! At the moment I can still excuse it as a result of still living through the so-called “honeymoon period” (when you get to a new place and genuinely do need to socialize and meet people in the city), but eventually I am really going to have to start reining myself in - for the sake of my skin (gone to hell since I started smoking) and my bank balance if nothing else!
