Went to the beautiful seaside village of Bangor today. We walked along the sea wall past the harbour and the rows of tidy little San Francisco-like homes. I wonder if the people who live there take for granted that spectacular view across the peninsula? So beautiful. The wind across the water is brutally cold and smells like sea salt. The water was really choppy which Rose tells me is referred to as "white horses." (Remember Rose is from Ireland so she's hip to the lingo and legend). I said, "how do the waves look like horses?" She said, "Have you no imagination? The whitecaps are like their manes." I suppose if you had a few pints under your belt, the waves could look like horse manes surfacing momentarily then rolling under the water. Like horses moving ... read more

Sushi in Belfast is good but insanely expensive. We went to Sakura where they have sushi on a treadmill and you pick what you want. I had a few pieces which would have cost me about $11 at home. £17 here! That's $35. Nobody can survive on $35 worth of sushi, unfortunately, so because I was still hungry, we went for curry. I have to say that nobody can make a curry like the Irish. We eat it all the time. It's fantastic--better than anything I've had in the Indian restaurants in Canada. Afterwards, we wandered through the streets of Belfast, which are so different now. Years ago, there would have been soldiers with machine guns at every corner and you'd have to have your bag checked before you walked into any of the shops. Now ... read more

It's tradition with the Irish rellies to meet every Saturday afternoon for tea at the coffee shop in Debenham's shopping centre downtown. And then afterwards they all go shopping. The lingerie department was advertising "free bra fitting" (did you know that 70 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra?) so we all lined up and waited our turn to go into the little booth to be measured. Turns out, 70 percent of us were wearing the wrong size bra, too. Rose promptly bought herself a (giant) lovely pink bra in the correct size and after wearing it yesterday she has just now informed me, "it's cuttin' the tits off me."... read more

Hello everyone Rosey here the other travelling companion of Debbie not as good of a story teller as Deb. Having a marvelous time eating lots and drinking please someone sign me up for AA and WW for when I get back. Spending lots of time with Deb's family did not realize there was so many of them there everywhere HAHA. Being back in my homeland is just fantastic did not realize how much I miss it the people and the countryside and last but not least the ocean. Sad to be back with memories and not the people. Spent a couple of days in Larne my home town walked in steps that I did as a wee girl either the places have shrunk or I've gotten bigger. Miss you all, can wait to get back. Janelle ... read more

There are two things that Ireland does not have: one single faucet that mixes the hot and cold water (what's with one tap for hot water and one tap for cold? I keep burning my left hand and freezing my right. Half my face is always scalded! The other thing it doesn't have is an abundance of internet cafes. That's why I have not been able to post any pictures. Maybe by the time I'm finished this blog, I'll have been able to coax this computer into cooperating. In the meantime, I'll jot some notes about what we've been doing. Words can't do justice, unfortunately, to the nine glorious Glens of Antrim, where we have been for the past few days. The Glens are a giant patchwork of Ireland's famous "40 shades of green" as far ... read more

Larne: population 37. Last night we went to a little pub called the Station Bar. We had a pint of Tennants in these really neat beer glasses with embossed letters. So I decided to ask the bartender if he could sell us a couple as souveniers. We ended up chatting with the bar owner, Stephen, and his three pals--Paddy, William and Eamon. Fabulous guys. Good looking. And, unlike a few of the guys in the bar, these fellows still had all their teeth. Wouldn't let us buy a drink. Stephen gave Rose and me some really nice football jerseys... and not one souvenir beer glass but the whole damn case! He even delivered it to our B & B this morning so we didn't have to make our way back last night carrying 24 glass pint ... read more

I haven't been able to post any photos yet because we haven't found an internet cafe that has the right technology! I will soon, though. Yesterday we drove out to Annalong, which is an ancient and beautiful little village that is flanked by the Mourne Mountains on one side and the Irish sea on the other. We stopped at the place where Pete died, on a narrow road that winds past green meadows up to the Mourne Mountains. Pete borrowed someone's motorcycle and hit the stone fence along the narrow road. His last view would have been those giant velvet mountains. It's been twenty years and I still miss him. We went out to the churchyard where Pete and my grandmother are buried. It's a lonely place and the wind is always howling and unfriendly, blowing ... read more

A follow-up to my previous post... Later on that first night, Rose and I got back to Paddy's Palace International hostel and found the door locked. A very grumpy man opened it and informed us that the front door was around the back (that's Belfast for ye)... so we apologized and tiptoed up the 150-year-old stairs with its 150-year-old handrail that had clearly not been washed in as many years..yecch... We opened the door to our dorm which smelled like the great unwashed masses. Rose threw up her hands and said, "that's it; we're outa here!" She hauled our suitcases back down the 150-year-old stairs, out onto the 150-year-old street. There we were, out on the street at 1 a.m. in a not-so-posh corner of Belfast, with two suitcases in hand and nowhere to sleep. I ... read more

Well, we arrived... after a two hour delay in Calgary while they fixed our plane (!) which of course meant we missed our Belfast connection and got stuck in Heathrow for five hours. On the bright side, I was seated next to a guy named who made me laugh my head off the whole trip. Rosie slumbered peacefully across the aisle, wearing those eyemasks that fragile movie stars wear. Being stranded in an airport with fellow weary travelers is a great way to meet people and hear about where their journey is taking them. Rosie and I are going to have to make something up to outdo the people who are going to Kenya to plan a humanitarian conference... or to the Middle East to pedal oilfield equipment to filthy rich shieks. Our plans to drink ... read more
