Hanoi is the capital and second largest city of Vietnam. Imagine a city where the exotic chic of old Asia blends with the dynamic face of new Asia. Where the medieval and modern co-exist. A city with a blend of Parisian grace and Asian pace, an architectural museum piece evolving in harmony with its history, rather than bulldozing through like many of the region’s capitals. Hanoi is where imagination becomes reality. A mass of motorbikes swarms through the tangled web of streets that is the Old Quarter, a cauldron of commerce for almost 1000 years and still the best place to check the pulse of this resurgent city. Hawkers in conical hats ply their wares, locals sip coffee and bia hoi (beer) watching life (and plenty of tourists) pass them by. Witness synchronised t’ai chi at ... read more

Vang Vieng is a tourism-oriented town in Laos, located about four hours bus ride north of the capital Vientiane. Nestled beside the Nam Song (Song River) amid stunningly beautiful limestone karst terrain. Vang Vieng today is mainly a backpacker town. The main street, now called the Khoa San Road, is littered with guest houses, bars, restaurants, internet cafes and tour agencies. The area’s main attraction has always been the dramatic landscape surrounding Vang Vieng. The Nam Song, meanwhile, plays host to kayakers and tubing - travellers floating along on tractor inner tubes, a pastime so thoroughly enjoyable and popular that it has become one of the rites of passage of the Indochina (region in Southeast Asia, east of India, south of China) backpacking circuit. 18 December 2009 Got up and had breakfast then boarded mini bus ... read more

11, 12 & 13 December 2009 Got local bus back to Chiang Mai for 70 baht, had to stand up for first hour and half, bus took around 4 and half hours. Dan and Sam got mini bus which only had two seats available. Sam was ill so I said I would get the local bus. They arrived before me and had already checked into a triple room at T K's, which had 6 single beds?! Booked 3 day 2 night trek for 1000 baht, which I thought was cheap. Priced up bus to boarder, staying night at Chiang Khong, getting boat over to Loas, crossing boarder, slow boat down Mekong River for 2 days to Luang Prabang in a TAT office (tourist information). Also, asked TK and he done it for the same price so ... read more

Tuesday 01 December 2009 Kieran met me off train which was 2 hours late. Checked into T K's, single room comprising of a double bed and a single bed!? Hired a bike and went to Chiang Mai Sports Complex, played tennis then went to the outdoor swimming pool. They had an olympic pool and 5 diving boards. I started diving off each board but only made it to number 3, as I hit the water my shoulder came out and went back in. I managed to ride bike back to accommodation, had some pain killers and went to bed. It was very annoying as many physical excursions in Chiang Mai, like zip wiring through juggle and downhill mountain biking. Chiang Mai is a big city which is busy, not what I remember or expected. On the ... read more

Friday 27 November 2009 Got bus to Kanchanaburi with Daniel and Sam. Staying at Jolly Frogs 400 baht for room that sleeps 4, apparently the only room they have available. Hired motorbikes and went to see Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway. We were trying to cross the bridge but the police kept telling us no even though we had seen many other people crossing. We just carried on anyway but the reason was a train was due! They have a special show on tonight, re-enacting the construction of the railway and then the bombing of the bridge. The show was really good and I now understand the story behind the railway and bridge. Will have to watch film at some point. Saturday 28 November 2009 Me and Dan went to Erawan National ... read more

Thursday 19 November 2009 Got bus to coach station then coach to Ranong about 6 hours. Elaine pre-arranged our accommodation from the Lonely Planet and they agreed to pick us up from Ranong Bus Station, which entailed a lift to the pier and speed boat to Ko Phayam. The speedboat was around 5-5:30 so we watched the sun going down. We stayed at Vijit Bungalows (Ao Kwai), 300 baht a night, which was on beach front with amazing white sand. From Ko Phayam Pier we had to hire bikes to get to accommodation as no cars or minibuses on island just paths wide enough for motorbikes to pass each other. Ko Phayam is really nice and quiet, only 500 inhabitants. We had meal at accommodation and I was in bed by 11. Electricity goes off at ... read more

Thursday 12 November 2009 Got boat to Koh Phi Phi for 350 baht, views were amazing. Phi Phi is buzzing and very built up, with shacks, shops and restaurants. No motor vehicles on island so people on push bikes everywhere, ringing there bell to pass you. I'm staying in Phi Phi Dream for 500 baht a night with hot shower! Others are staying 2 minutes up road with place that has a pool for 700 baht a night. Spent day round pool as very hot. We went to beach but lasted less than half an hour, too hot. Even the Sea is hot as quite shallow. As we hadn't seen others for a few days we had a big night out. In Tiger Bar for most of night which played funky house. The couple from Bromley ... read more

Thursday 05 November 2009 Got bus from Krabi Town to Ao Nam Mao (port) then boat to Hat Rai Leh East (Railay) which cost 130 baht. Checked into Ya Ya Resort 375 baht a night. Ate in Ya Ya's restaurant, had whole Red Snapper, mixed kebab (chicken, beef & barracuda) with 2 jacket potatoes for 360 baht. Went to Last bar which had live band and free pool, most waiters were lady boys! Friday 06 November 2009 Weather not very good, cloudy with heavey showers. Went to Last bar for a few games of pool then to Diamond Cave (limestone formations and golden stone waterfall). On the way back from the caves we saw wild monkeys coming down the mountain. On the evening went to Bambu Bar as they had fire show and Thai boxing. Thai ... read more

We arrived in Bangkok and went straight to Khao San Road. Checked into D&D Hotel, 550 baht (53 baht to pound roughly) for single room with breakfast and air con. Roof top pool was really nice. Weather has been to hot. Food stalls on street were amazing, Chicken and Egg Pad Thai with Spring Roll 55 baht (just over pound). Had a few beers watching Man U vs Liverpool, bar was packed and served 3lt towers of Chang! (local beer). Decided to go in roof top pool once back at hotel as open until 2am. The next day we just explored Khao San Road and made use of the pool. Went to Pat Pong market on the evening and decided to eat there. We were looking for somewhere to eat and went down side street when ... read more
