My name is Dirk Verhagen, a Dutch student doing Human Media Interaction at Lund University. At the moment I'm travelling around Sweden if time permits me. I'm planning on visiting Malmö, Helsingborg, Göteborg, Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, perhaps Helsinki and who knows, some other small places as well. Most of my time however will be spent in Lund, which is perhaps the smallest large university town I have ever seen.
Here I am doing my masters project: Adding methods of interaction to a virtual reality museum and so adding to the user experience. It's great fun in a really advanced lab with some high tech stuff. I still need test subjects in a couple of months so feel free to apply ;). Think about stuff like body tracking (with a stereo camera), magic wand (wii-mote), or a haptic glove.
In Lund I live in an international corridor along with a lot of other people so plenty of things happening and plenty of stuff to write about!

As some might note, this update has been long in coming, actually I have already been back to the Netherlands but I will try and make some updates with, most importantly: Photos :). So! A long time ago, in the 2nd week of februari, my dear girlfriend Lisanne came to visit me in Lund. After all of the stories about the people in my corridor she wanted to see for herself if it was really as cool here as I said it was, and of course she missed me a little bit ;). I think the start wasn't all it could be. I bought me a ticket to Copenhagen to pick her up but I felt trouble, which turned out to be true. First train to Copenhagen was canceled, the second one did not really go ... read more

A little while ago (the weekend of 2 February actually, so I'm richly late in publishing this blog, as usual) I went on a weekend to Göteborg. Some might not know this but it is actually the second largest city in Sweden. I knew someone who lived there (and just to beat smart comments to the punch, yes it is through a computer game, drunken gaming can be cool!) who invited me over and who am I to turn him down! So off I went (after spending f**king five minutes figuring Swedish train ticket machines out, now I know what an apex ticket is) on a three hour train ride during which I finished a lot of reading and got to see some of the Swedish landscape between Lund and Göteborg, which, unfortunately wasn't all that ... read more

Malmö Red Hawks vs. Nybro whatever! Last days have been interesting! On Wednesday I have gone to an ice hockey match with Svenja's Mentor group. They had their trip planned out and told us about it, me and Hannes thought it sounded like a good idea so we went ahead and invited ourselves to the match. No one seemed to mind and as it turned out I actually knew half the mentor group from the international welcome party already. So off we went, to the Malmö Red Hawks in their stadium! It was raining cats and dogs as we went there so the trip wasn't really worth remembering but we did go to this supermarket where, according to Swedish tradition, I bought a sandwich with red beets and meatballs... Only the sauce wasn't red, but a ... read more

Us new arrivals wanted to check out the nearby city of Lund, Swedens third-largest city and only fifteen minutes by train. Since most of us still didn't have any classes or they could still be skipped ;) we decided we would go today. Originally it was me, Svenja and Hannes but later on me and Svenja ran into Georg (a Swiss guy living in a Swedish corridor in this building) while we were heading to our coordinator (who wasn't there, we forgot the IO was closed). We invited him and he joined as well (and skipped a class!). So off we went, probably my first visit to downtown Lund in daylight. I noticed it was more pitoresque than I thought so I started taking loads of pictures. I explained to Hannes, Svenja and Georg that pictures ... read more

January 9th 2008

So, today, on the 9th of January, I have finally arrived in Lund. The trip by train was really comfortable except for the passport check (in the Schengen zone???) which seemed a bit useless since they let the boy without any papers or reliable story of what he was doing in Denmark in anyway. First 6 hours I sat all alone and watched Disney's Alladin, read. Then when I started sleeping I was woke up by a couple of Germans joining in. Later on I would find out that one of the German girls was heading to Lund as well so once we got off in Copenhagen we traveled the last part together. Of course the train had 'unexpected' problems so we needed to catch a connection in Malmö as well. Feels just like home :). ... read more
