This was the news clipping regarding the excitement we observed at the beach. Luckily the outcome was good. Friday, June 5, 2009 Aussie family narrowly avoids drowning in Phuket KARON, PHUKET: A family of Australian tourists who ignored red warning flags narrowly escaped drowning at Karon Beach on Tuesday afternoon. Chalong Police identified the victims as Mr Samir Mourad, 58, his daughter Zeinab, 16, and Mr Mourad’s wife, whose first name and age were not reported. According to the report, Mr Mourad was sunbathing while his wife and daughter entered the heavy surf, despite the fact that red warning flags were clearly visible in the area. The mother and daughter were soon pulled out to sea by a rip tide and began calling for help. Mr Mourad heard their shouts and went in the water to ... read more

8th June Down to the last brekkie and a swim. Shot down the road for the last massage. We were pushing it for time as we were being picked up at 12 and we had a 1 hour massage start at 10.20. Raced back, quick shower and chuck everything in the bag, down to reception at 11.40. Bloody good timing I thought. Off to the airport for a 1hr 30 min flight to Singapore. Typing this in Changi airport, Singapore. Got a few hours to kill before our next flight. 9th June Home again to 12 degrees celcius. Brrrrrrrr!!!! The flight was good, once again Singapore Airlines were great, kept us fed & entertained all night. The flight was 9hrs 30min overnight - with a 260km tail wind. We got back ½ an hour early, more ... read more

Day off. Spent the morning in the pool then later were joined by Geoff and Chris from Timaru. They hired a bike and we all went site seeing. Showed them the Promthep Cape with lighthouse. Then we wen to Rawai Beach and had a spot of lunch and fruit shake. On to the Big Buddah, this guy is huge. He is on the highest peak on Phuket Island, the bikes did get quite hot getting there. He is not yet complete, still a lot of work to do. You can see him from almost anywhere on the island. He sits on a hollow concrete base and is made entirely of solid marble tiles, about 25mm thick. He is about 45 metres high. Amazing views. Got back to hotel late afternoon and hit the pool again. The ... read more

Down for a morning in the pool and then a big vodka and back to the dentist. More crowns and the last of the filling removal and replacement. Back to Karon Beach for lunch and some rather tragic excitement. While we were waiting for lunch to arrive, there was an influx of police and ambulances all with sirens blazing all happening about 100 metres away. We went over to the beach to see what all the excitement was and there were people in the surf with life vests and ropes etc, it appears someone had gone missing in the water which is not surprising as the water at this time of the year is treacherous with a really bad undertow. I am a good swimmer, and even I wasn’t keen on swimming in the surf. The ... read more

Much the same as yesterday. Except we went up the coast this time and found some amazing luxury resorts that go for miles, nice clean beaches etc. We rode nearly to the top of the island and this is one big island. By the time we had decided to turn around and take the motorway back home, it was rush hour - oh bugger and our bums were so sore, this bike isn’t made for comfort. With Warren watching the traffic and me looking out for road signs, we made it back whew with no wrong turns. See Murv, it is only inside resorts I can’t navigate!!!! Stopped in at the opticians on the way back and picked up my glasses, had new lenses made - yay I can see again, bloody marvellous. In for a ... read more

Today is a rest from the Dentist till Friday. Spent some time by the pool, the temperature is in the mid 30’s. Went for a blast on the nifty scooter down to the bottom of Phuket and walked out to the farthest point on Phuket. Luckily there a lot of wind as it would have been a killer if there wasn’t any. Got back up, gasping for a drink, the walk really dehydrated us so we went down and found some gatoraide. Yeah yeah I know, it should have been water, but gatoraide tastes so much better. Hopped back on the bike to cool off and headed around to a few bays, then back thru Wat Chalong, over the hill to Patong and back along the beaches back to our hotel. We went out to dinner ... read more

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GAYLENE!!! Hope you guys had a pleasant flight home and Coastline were there to meet you. We have moved hotels, now at the Serene Resort on Kata Beach, and believe it or not, we have the same room we had when we last stayed here. This room has tea and coffee, the last one didn’t. We have hired a 125 bike till Sunday, a little automatic one that seems to do the job. Warren had the most harrowing of days yet at the dentist, however the results are amazing. He spent from 12pm to 2.15 in the chair then a break till 3 and out again at 5.30. On Friday there are two more visits and hopefully that will be the end of it. I went and had another look at Jungcelon - a ... read more

31st May Back to the Dentist again, for completion of the root canal that Warren’s NZ dentist botched. Back to the hotel for an afternoon by the pool. Beautiful day. Met up with some Kiwis from Timaru and we all went out for din dins. Nice people, good company. Gaylene picked up her new glasses, they look really good. 1st June Back up the road for some last minute shopping for Murv and Gaylene before they have to board the big silver bird and wing they’re way to Singapore for and even bigger bird for NZ. We will miss them, as they have been great company. We had a foot massage later on, and the girls (and lady boy) were asking where were our friends. They were very disappointed they had to go home. ... read more

Back to the Dentist today for the new front teeth. The dentist let me go in to see what the new teeth will look like. These are crowns and not veneers. Warrens dentist had previously ruined his teeth for veneers so we had to go the more expensive way and have the crowns fitted. I was in there while she administered the anaesthetic etc. She was very good. She first numbed the area where she was putting the injections and when she put the needle in, she took well over a minute to very slowly put the anaesthetic in. Not like at home where they just jab you and pump the stuff in. The teeth, I must say they look really good. She has even made his bite better. His teeth always did protrude slightly but ... read more

No Dentist today. After brekkie we took our washing up the road to have washed and ironed. We then took in a Phuket tour, this was an all day affair. We did some site seeing and checked out the cashew factory, went elephant riding and checked out a couple of really old temples. One was a Thai temple and the other an old Chinese Shrine and the oldest Chinese mansion dating back to the mid 1800’s. We checked out another gem factory but I was really restrained, Gaylene however had a ball - that credit card has to be red hot. Next we went up the island to a national park and had lunch, checked out a waterfall and then went to see how they got rubber from the rubber trees and made rubber mats. We ... read more
