With a little luck in an hour and a half I'll be taking off for Newark on UA 87 ending an enlightening and entertaining week. It's fitting that this last hour has me a little off-balance because I just noticed that the boarding pass I printed out at the hotel says I must check in at the airport. I got here so early that there was no one at the United counter and some folks on line said they were not supposed to arrive for 45 minutes so I headed for customs and the United lounge (which I had access to thanks to a pass I received with my United credit card. For a guy who doesn't fly much, I am the frequent flier king.) There's no one working the gate and I'm keeping my fingers ... read more

Have you ever had the experience of driving in a major city REALLY early in the morning before the traffic starts? It makes you realize how wonderful the place could be if it weren't for all the congestion. That's what Chris, Jim and I experienced when we caught a cab from our hotels to the Beijing Train Station at 6 am today. The extra delightful experience of the Chinese capital continued when we arrived at the ultra modern, clean station full of attractive stores and restaurants -- Chris was even able to get his signature espresso quad shot at Starbucks. My amazement at what the Chinese have built continued as our comfortable, high-speed train pulled out and quickly and nearly silently hit 300 kilometers per hour. Amtrak is pathetic by comparison. Once outside the city, however, ... read more

I've flown hundreds of times over the years, but the miracle of high-speed, long-distance jet travel never ceases to amaze me. So much so that whenever we travel overseas, Andi teases me because I inevitably say something like: "Can you believe that just yesterday we were walking the dog back in Rye and now we're in (FILL IN THE BLANK AMAZING LOCATION.)" Well, Andi wouldn't have been surprised to hear me repeating that refrain this morning when I found myself climbing the steep steps of the Great Wall of China surrounded by thousands of Chinese tourists. We "did" the wall at Badalang, the most visited and most touristy of the Great Wall sites, because we wanted to see it as the average Chinese person would. Apropos of that, our adventure began by taking the subway at ... read more

Day One of my trip was a huge success. Splurging on a Business/First upgrade on United Flight 89 was a great investment -- terrific lounge access at JFK before the flight, the most comfortable seat/bed I've ever experienced, terrific in flight food and a great entertainment center made the nearly 14-hour flight very easy to endure. In fact I arrived in Beijing at 1:45 pm local time feeling quite rested in spite of the 12-hour time difference (12 hours ahead of NY time) After freshening up at the JW Marriott Beijing , Chris and I quickly walked through the nearby luxury mall -- beautiful stores with lots of staff and not too many customers for a Saturday afternoon. Apparently such enterprises make their money on occasional HUGE sales to very wealthy customers, not a steady flow ... read more

I've wanted to visit the People's Republic of China ever since I played Chairman Mao in the Great World Debate staged by my sixth grade class in 1972. (I can still remember hand rolling 72 egg rolls to serve the class with my Mom and friend Seth Swirsky. It was an amazing experience -- thanks to my teachers Marion Greif and Bill Toto.) Forty years later I'm finally taking that trip thanks to an invitation to speak at a conference in Beijing on Corporate Social Responsibility and Cause Marketing . I've traveled to many countries in my 53 years (Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Belgium, Belize, Denmark, Dominican Republic, England, France, Germany, Guadeloupe, Holland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland and Venezuela - have I forgotten any?), ... read more
