Day 6 Friday 3rd April We were up and packed pretty early, continuing on down the punishing hill into Deba. Here we had some breakfast and bought some nibblies for the day - fruit, nuts, chocolate. We were once again looking at another nasty day, with a massive climb out of Deba. Our plan was to have a relatively small day - from Deba get up and over the hill, then get some supplies in Olatz, before finding a place to camp somewhere between Olatz and Markina, depending on how far our poor bodies would take us. However, when we [View Full Entry]

Day 5 Thursday 2nd April We were up and left the caravan park at the crack of 8.30am, quite an achievement given the late nights... It was then down into the township of Zarautz where we had some breakfast. The journey then took us through some lovely vineyards which were stunning, and will look so nice in the coming months when the grapes fill the vines. We stopped at Zumaia to get some supplies for lunch and so Ben and Lauren could post some of their stuff on to Santiago to collect when we finally arrive. I tell you for [View Full Entry]

Day 4 Wednesday 1st April Up bright and early to once again resume our grueling walking schedule... It was a bit daunting as the day leading into San Sebastian, that almost killed us, was considered to be 'medium', where as the day ahead of us was given a scale of 'hard'... However it wasn't too bad at all, with mostly gently sloping roads. We later learned that on the day coming into San Sebastian we had accidentally taken a harder scenic route, and not the official Camino route, hence explaining why we found it so tough... At a small town [View Full Entry]

Day 1 Sunday 29th March The original plan was to stay in Irun for one day, and then start the Camino bright and early on Monday morning. However, after a quick breakfast and look around town (not much to see with it being a Sunday), we decided that we might as well make a start of it, and begin the adventure then and there. And so after a quick repack of our backpacks, and purchasing some supplies for lunch and dinner, we set off in the early afternoon, on our 800-odd km trail across the country... And so we made [View Full Entry]

Barcelona! Europe » Spain
Thursday 26th March After a good 2 hour flight from Luton, we arrived in at Girona airport, just north of Barcelona, at about 9.15pm. Lauren had emailed us great directions on how to navigate out way from the airport to our hotel, but unfortunately we arrived at a different airport to the one she thought we would (there are 3 airports which come into Barcelona).... But we soldiered on, somehow following the multitudes of other travelers onto a bus for the one hour drive from the airport to Barcelona. Once dropped in the middle of Barcelona, our sleuthing skills led [View Full Entry]

Dav turns 27! We had an early start to the day as Bodhi, the dog that visits Lucretia and Craig's house, snuck (with the help of Lucretia and Craig!) into the bedroom to give us a big good morning welcome! Unfortunately for Craig he then had to head off to work, as the rest of us piled in on the bed so Dav could open his cards and presents. Lucretia then made us a lovey breakfast of croissants (and of course a cup of tea), and the rest of the morning was spent with the birthday boy receiving call after [View Full Entry]

March update Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Exeter
Sidmouth One crazy English day in early March we braved the weather conditions and drove out to Sidmouth, on the northern beaches near Exeter. After sampling a lovely creamed tea (aka Devonshire tea) while the rain beat down and the winds whipped up a frenzy, we were lucky to snatch a limpse of lovely sunshine as we walked along the stoney beaches. Once again as in Brighton, we experienced the deafening sounds of the waves sweeping back over the rocks, although this time we were thoughtful enough to catch it on film (even if we had no idea wher [View Full Entry]

February update Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Exeter
Lucretia and Craig Lucretia and Craig (Davin's sister and her husband) arrived in London in early February, landing in Heathrow just hours before the airport was shut due to snow (in the same night we were stranded in the Dublin airport thanks to said snow storm!). While a very exciting welcome to the northern hemisphere with neither of them having before seen falling snow, it was a bit of a temperature shock having come from 30 degree days on Thailand beaches. Plus there was the sheer pain-in-the-bum factor as they struggled their way through snowy streets with [View Full Entry]

One more time...disturbing!
Brighton

Our looooong weekend in the Emerald Isle Some months back we managed to secure some ridiculously cheap flights to Dublin with budget airline RyanAir. While the actual flights only cost 1 penny each per way, after taking into account the 'non-EU citizens charge' the total cost of £40 was still a bargain! Day 1 - Thursday So Thursday afternoon, after an early escape from work, we drove up to Bristol and caught our hour-long flight over to the land of three-leaved clovers and lepracauns. At the Dublin airport we picked up our hir [View Full Entry]

Australia Day! Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Exeter
AUSTRALIA DAY You didn't think we'd forget just because we weren't actually in the country did you? Quite the contrary, our sense of patriotism was inflated to such proportions that we started sprouting such phrases as 'you flamin hooligan' and 'you're a bloody galah' without the normal fear of social humiliation and disownership that normally follows such talk in the Great Land. Indeed, I have discovered that once abroad, 'Alf' from Home and Away actually becomes a bit of an icon, looked upon fondly and merticulously emulated with a sense of pride for his mast [View Full Entry]
