First impression arriving to Kiev was - big, ugly (Soviet style) and big, but also very interesting. And that impression stayed for all the time. First experience was waiting in a huge irrational line by metro to get our zhetons. It took around 20 minutes to get them. Metro is one of really impressive things in Kiev - it goes so deep down and has these shiny advertisements that it looks surreal (and it looked surreal and hilarious when I listened to Moby - Run On song). As my host was busy I had put my backpack in hostel where my coupe mates were staying. While looking for it, near independence square we were “attacked” by unshaved drunkard-looking man wearing unwashed white bear costume. He wanted us to pay for talking pictures with him. No matter ... read more

For Spring break I thought to make some bigger trip and to somewhere outside Poland. And idea came to me -Ukraine. And so it was decided. Thursday evening I packed my backpack and went to Warszawa Centralna. 04.10 1.30 am Train Warsaw-Krakow The journey started. I always have mixed feeling before trips - excitement and also worry. I always worry if I am going to get on the right train, if everything will be OK. So with these mixed feelings I put my backpack on my shoulders and went out to evening Warsaw. The weather was great and I got the last tram to train station. The beginning did not go very smooth, the train was late 40 minutes and I have to transfer to another train in Krakow. But it also had the upside - ... read more

Short facts: Participants: Me Destination: Torun, Poland Length of the trip: 3 days Distance: 183 km from Warsaw to Torun Music: Queen Adreena Reading: Lonely Planet "Eastern Europe", Ryszard Kapuscinski "Podroze z Herodotem" (cannot say that I really read this, but I bought this) March 27.16:30 Sitting in the train with Lonely Planet "Eastern Europe" in my hands. It is interesting and quite amusing to read this being Eastern European myself (especially all those "and you can see the leftovers of Soviet Union there and there"). I really like Lonely Planet and generally good guides, they show the potential of you can see and where you can be. Even if you don't see it all. So I am watching outside the window to fields and plains of Poland, that remind me so much of my home ... read more

Short facts: Participants: Me and my mentor Katarzyna Destination: Poznan, Poland Length of the trip: 3days Distance: 275 km from Warsaw to Poznan Music: Queen Adreena, Nirvana and silence Reading: National Geographic and Pravda Day 1 I came to Poznan about 10 pm and my hostess from couchsurfing met me in train station. She lives not far from Katedra so the first small sightseeing was on a way home, I think churches look even better at night. First evening I spent at her place drinking tea and getting to know each other. The next morning I was not in a hurry, woke up quite late, spent morning drinking coffee and reading National Geographic magazine. My hostess gave me a map and told what should I see, what should I skip. So I head out and started ... read more

Short facts: Distance - 400km from Warsaw to Zakopane Length - around 4 days Music - Death Note soundtrack and Chinese audio lessons I was considering for quite long either to go to Zakopane with Erasmus people or not. Main concern was what will I do there if I don't like skiing and trekking was not possible because of the snowfall. But eventually I decided to go. Me and other 3 people were late to have places in the bus, but we had places in hostel so all we needed is to get there by train. Which made me happy as I like trains. We bought our tickets for 00.44 am February 26. While waiting for others to come I was walking around in the station and talking to myself in Mandarin, which apparently was scaring ... read more

February 18 This blog will be (hopefully) continuous entry about me exploring city of Warsaw. I am Erasmus student here ate University of Warsaw an gonna stay here till June. So plenty of time to explore. I came here February 16th and the same day we had first Erasmus party, yay! And today I started exploration (not too much though, it's freaky cold here now). In front of KINOTEKA I found this ten all covered with pictures of mummies. Apparently it was exhibition about Egypt. Ive never been to Egypt so I decided to see what they have there. I got a Egyptian guide (as actually none of polish people there spoke good enough English for guiding) and e showed me around. Then there was 10 minutes theatrical play about mummification, one person was dressed as ... read more

Short facts: Participants: Me and my boyfriend Livijus Destination: Serbia Length of the trip: 14 days Approximate distance there and back: ~2000 km Music: Pink Floyd/Queen Adreena Books: Master and Margarita (started and finished during the long driving in cars), The Bridge on the Drina (started during trip, finished at home) The First Hitchhiking Day So it was early morning of 12th of August. I woke up with excitement and some sort of fear at the same time - the first day of the trip had come. First time hitchhiking, first time to Serbia, first time together. The excitement of being on the road again and trying out hitchhiking, which I have always wanned to try out, overwhelmed the fear and I rose up from bed with happiness (even though it was early morning just after ... read more

My trip to SE Asia was really unexpected fast choice. Instead of China travel, which I was doing nothing for, I decided to do Thailand-Cambodia-Vietnam-Laos trip. June 11, I got in to taxi and went to Tashkent airport. As expected it was a bit messy there. I had no lil shitty paper they gave me 4 months ago, so I was already panicked that I wont get into the plane in first place. But it went out good and eventually I was on Uzbekistan airways plane, 6 hours flight to Bangkok. The services in the plane was better than I expected! Landed in Thailand and got my on-arrival visa. The first surprising thing was the humidity. As soon as I left airport it was like I got into sauna. And this humidity kept surprising me all ... read more

So, one nice thursday morning we head out to what is considered to be the most beautiful part of Uzbekistan - Fergana Valley. First part was getting to to the place in Tashkent where taxies to Fergana leave. Me, Roman and Vidmantas were just standing and waiting while Bekzod was negotiating the price with the swarm of taxi drivers. Typical sight in Uzbekistan. After some negotiation one of the swarm was selected, as we experienced later not the best one. The way to Fergana is very beautiful - liek a scenary from Lord of the Rings, except of army man with sniper guns guarding tunnels. There is only one way to Fergana and it is heavily guarded, mostly because of Andijon events few years ago... After some time our car was stopped by police, which is ... read more

One nice day in Tashkent we were in a big hurry to go to train leaving for Urgench. Why such a hurry? Well, trip was planned long time before, but plans changes and the final decision to go on a trip which will last about a week was made a day before. But we were able to come in time to train station and buy first class ticket (“we” means me, my Uzbek friend Bekzod and my Czech friend Roman). So that’s how it started. First of all we had to survive 20 hours on train, which did not seem too hard being in the first class, just us three in whole cabin. But unexpected things do happen and while enjoying our first class comfort we saw an Uzbek lady, about 50 years old, and her, ... read more
