Travel Blog Posts

Hoş geldiniz! Welcome! After a drought of blog entries, and quite frankly a lack of inspiration...er laziness... I'm back on the ball. For those of you who have, for whatever reason, missed out on my emails, last 5 months of planning, Facebook updates, and anything else I do to publish my life...I bring to you my latest move...to Istanbul! I traveled to Turkey back in March with Leslie, a friend who I worked with in Barcelona, for 10 days during which the country stole my heart from Spain. Almost right after returning back to Barcelona I set out searches for English teaching jobs in Istanbul. I ended with a position at English First--a Swiss company that's been running for almost 40 years, at a branch in Levent, the business area of Istanbul. I've only had two ... read more

So how does one start walking for 600km? One step in front of the other. We woke to the rustling of plastic bags and muffled whispers between pilgrims at 5:20. I willingly hopped out of bed after a night plagued by dreams of failure of the camino. Seriously, I dreamt that I was getting off of my bunkbed and knocked them over creating a horrific domino effect of the rest of the bunkbeds in the albergue. We filled our waterbottles in the early morning darkness and set out for our first 30km (18.5 miles or so) hike. Feeling a little nervous we see our first pilgrim walking and squeak out a shy “Buen Camino” (“Good Walk”). To which he replies, “Buen Camino”. Within in the fisrt 10 minutes we run into a hoard of bikers, around ... read more

The morning of the 4th of July Sophie and I woke up in Barcelona forgetting the fireworks and hotdogs celebration back at home, hopped on the Metro to Estacio Sants to get on the early morning train headed towards Burgos. We dressed ready for hiking but wouldn’t do much more than sitting for the next 8 hours on the train. We found ourselves surrounded by 2 dozen adolescents on their way to a camping trip also in Burgos. After spending 5 hours amongst the childrens squeals, shrieks, and cries for attention from one another, Soph and I decided it was enough, grabbed our bags in search for other seats. Once we realized that the rest of our former car had also abandoned their seats and later occupied the remaining available seats. Begrudgingly, we decided it better ... read more

Greetings from in-transit Danielle. I’ve just embarked on my first long-distance train trip in Spain. I’m on my way to Barcelona from Bilbao on a 9-hour journey to spend my Easter vacation. I usually take the plane for convenience purposes as it only takes an hour and costs a mere 30 euro more, but I thought that this time it might be nice to see some of the country side between the Basque country and Catalonia. Anywho, I’ve taken short distance train trips before, no more than 2 hours. The trains that are usually provided for such distances somewhat resemble a city bus, standing room and hard plastic benches. The train that I am is well-equipped for long distance travel all the way down to reclining seats. The only thing is that it looks like ... read more

Hi All! So, I’m back to the travel blog after a mere two month break. Not too bad, eh? So it’s the begininning of March and I’m starting to realize just how little time I have left in the Language Auxiliar program here in Cantabria. My last day is on May 31st, which gives me less than three months. I can’t believe how quickly time has gone by. But this realization has led me to yet another. I need to start saving money! My brother, Sean, is coming at the end of May and we have deicded that for the first few weeks of June we are going to rent a car and do a driving tour of Spain. I have named the trip “Danielle and Sean’s Excellent Adventure”. Can you imagine Spain in the summer ... read more

So here it is. A quick summary of what the heck I’ve been doing for the last few months. Right now things are going really well at the elementary school that I’m working at. My mother sent me a book of various nursey rhymes in English paired with different interesting activities for kids. They’re all geared at native speakers but I changed them a little bit for my audience. For the last two weeks we worked on “Hickory, Dickory, Dock”. I know you’re thinking, “What the hell are you teaching them? Definitely not practical English. No one says Hickory, Dickory, Dock. In fact, you probably couldn’t even say it in classrooms of some conservative schools because of its similarity to certain explatives. What kind of teacher are you?”. Ok, well the nursery rhyme in itself isn’t ... read more

I know, I know. It’s been almost 4 months since I’ve written anything in this travel blog. But honestly, in order to have any material to wrtie in a travel blog, I really should be doing some travelling. It’s gonna seem crazy, but right now I’ve been doing less travelling than I do when I’m living in the US. I’ve been unbelievably busy working at the school where I work. In addition, I have a job at a language academy, private classes, as well as personal Spanish classes for myself. All in all, I’m probably working somewhere around 40 hours a week, not including all the planning I have to do. I’m not complaining at all, in fact I’m having a really great time. I’m just trying to give some weak justification for not having written ... read more

It’s been a few weeks of craziness. But now as it is all slowing down a little bit I figured that I would write another blog for you all. I left Barcelona almost 2 weeks ago. After spending a lovely last night and watching the sun set on Barcelona and the lights begin to illuminate the city, I realized that I have to go and that someday I’ll live in Barcelona. Until then, I get the privilege of living in Cantabria, a province in Northern Spain. After leaving Barcelona, I spent 2 days and nights in Madrid for a meeting for my program. I had hoped that at this meeting, we would be told exactly what we should be doing at the school and how to do it. In the spirit of Spanish disorganization, we ... read more

Where to start? At the beginning. I left San Diego a little over a two weeks ago to begin yet again another adventure in Spain. Plagued by nerves and disbelief that I was going abroad for a long time I got very little sleep except for a cat nap that I took in the Frankfurt airport during my 5 hour layover underneath a speaker announcing departure gates in German. Ein, zwei, drei. After a grueling 22 hour trip from San Diego I was greeted in the Barcelona airport by 3 smiling Catalans holding a big California flag. You can’t imagine how great it felt to be greeted by friends when I am so far away from home. Marta, Clara, and Jaume then whisked me away from the airport and brought me to Marta’s flat right in ... read more
