CHINA...Beijing...The Summer Palace...Walking on Water. When I visit Beijing...David & his wife Pauline are in town. David took Denise and I to the Summer Palace...special entry...different to other routes I have taken...old men swimming in parts of the lake not frozen...no way I'm crossing the ice this time...no way...so we sit in a tea house...just us...and David tells us his story. His father was an Admiral in the days of Mao...the Cultural Revolution. David often visited the Summer Palace as a kid...at night...hiding from the vicious guard dogs with his mates...areas out of bounds. As history shows...Mao turned those in favour...to those "Not in favour"...and when it was David's Dad's turn...David at age 17 was sent to a village in Inner Mongolia...for re-education. To break the spirits of the relocated for re-education...the local party boss had ... read more

CHINA: Beijing...Tiantan...The Temple of Heaven. 700,000 workers & soldiers cleared up snow on 23 December 2002...300 pedestrians were treated in hospital for falling on ice...the highest snowfalls in Beijing in 138 years...and I walked around the Forbidden City that day...in a blizzard!!! The following day I visited Tiantan...The Temple of Heaven...and three visits over the years I will share in this blog...each quite different. Considering the magic white setting for my first visit...it is easy to see why it is one of my favourite places...and the symbol of Beijing. The glossy Beijing book I bought in Tiananmen Square while looking for a fur hat describes it as follows: "Located in southern Beijing, the Temple of Heaven was built in 1420, during the reign of Emperor Yongle. Covering an area of 2,730,000 m2, it was the sight ... read more

CHINGLISH...Wisdom to Those in Need of Instruction. I come from a country...where there are signs everywhere..."Stop"..."Walk"..."Do Not Walk"..."No Smoking"..."Speed Limits"...Arrows bent & straight..."Wrong Way, Turn Back"..."Hospital"..."Police"..."Road under Repair"..."Bushfire Warning"..."One Way"..."Give Way"..."Children Crossing". Then there are street signs...names of shops...names for everything. But it was not until I reached Dali in Yunnan Provence...on my first trip to China...that I saw the sign that said it all...made me stop and think...to reflect on its wisdom...yet still makes me wonder..."What does it mean?" Couldn't say it better myself: Dear Guestes: Don' t Garn Animals. Couldn't help but think "OK...I won't"...yet there were no animals within coo-ee to explain it to me..! ... read more

CHINA: Beijing...in blizzards to find a fur hat...How it all began. The year is 2002...dinner with a friend from my youth...not seen him for years...he partnered with a Chinese/Georgian woman from Beijing...her parents Professors of Fine Arts...she separated from her family during the Cultural Revolution...lived in caves with others...me unable to imagine I would later meet some of these people...their stories changing my perspective on life. Over dinner showing me pictures of snow capped mountains ringing a surreal plateau... "We are going to Shangrai-La...its just opening up to tourism...we want to go before its too touristy...would you like to join us?" "Shangri-la"...that's the name of my first comp tennis team...this is fate...count me in! Booked three weeks and received itinerary for five...OK five...why not? Denise won't come as we ar... read more

FACES OF JAVA: THE WOMEN...Lifting the Veil...the Burqa Debate. Entering the most populous Islamic Nation on Earth...I had preconceptions. Would it be like Dubai...where veiled women walked hidden behind layers of cloth...or walked behind their husbands...where the men would invite me for coffee & a chat...confident in my portraits...but their women forbidden to my lens? But from the moment we hit Java, my preconceptions were blown out of the water...here the women were confident...predominately in headscarfs...faces open and not hidden...walking next to & confident in their husbands...in their very being...happy to grace my lens. I travelled around Java constantly marvelling at the openness of the people. But one night for me...it was like a slap in the face...my blissful sojourn was dashed. I didn't ask for it...but...I walked into the 'Burqa Debate'... read more

JAVA...THE MEN. When Surabaya travels to Yogyakarta...to play Football ...the local Police are ready for trouble...ready to meet the "Football Hooligan"...ready and waiting. But unlike the "riot squad" attitude necessary in some parts of the World...in Java they have discovered the answer... how to control the "Football Hooligan"...Javan style. There was a time when Surabayan supporters...packed into a 5 hour train ride to Yogy...arriving hungry...going through the warungs that had assembled to feed the masses...vendors complaining they were not paid...some warungs trashed...fights...more fights...opposing supporters...Police busy. Then someone in the Police...the Polisi...had an idea. So now when Surabaya travels to Yogyakarta...to play Football...the local Police are ready...ready to meet the Surabaya supporters. On arrival they are each given a b... read more

JAVA: Surabaya...Graffitti & Submarines. Long final breakfast...breathing in the majestic beauty at the Ijen Resort...one last time...aahh...now have to return to Surabaya...and infernal traffic. I think Fandi our Guide was happy to go...pretty boring for him to hang around for several days...sometimes only seeing us for meals...Hady our driver happy to see us again...and then there was the music. When we travel I bring along compilation CDs of my favourite Blues & Rock tracks...Fandi singing along...Hady happy to rock along...we happy as our previous guide Joe preferred Javanese temple music..!!! Down to the coast...waving to the poor souls on that island close enough to wave to...known as Bali...suckers...you can't swim over to this side...the current is against you...sailing craft and happy swimmers on this side...suckers..!!! Stop at one of the beaches for another ... read more

JAVA: Ijen...Danger, Poisonous Gas. My image of Ijen is a turquoise crater lake with sulphur workers extracting that noxious yellow element...as Ali captured in his blog . But in true travelling, everyone's experience is different, notwithstanding we may visit the same locales, or even the same paths & lookouts. And when we visited Ijen...that is how it was for us. Joe had warned us Ijen had just become active days before we hit Yogyakarta...villages were being evacuated...he did not know if we would be able to access the crater. So instead of cancelling that portion of our trip...we booked extra time there..!!! In planning our trip and choosing accommodation, I had been seduced by pictures of Ijen Resort & Villas at Banywangi...accessed by the roughest road imaginable...so said all the reviews...so I was determined to score ... read more

JAVA: Bromo Jeep Club. Up at 3.30am...no time for a shower to wake up...into thermals, wet weather gear, head torches, cameras, video, boots...check... meet Fandi our Guide at 4am...jeep ready...time to head off for the photo opportunity we have come so far to see...the Penanjakan Sunrise. The Dutch saw nothing at sunrise yesterday...clouded in then and raining...will we be lucky today? To travel anywhere in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park...the home of five volcanoes and the Tengger people...you can walk...which if you are travelling distance is silly...or promote the local Tengger economy...and travel by jeep...known in these parts as...the Bromo Jeep Club. As we leave Lava View Lodge...along the edge of the Tengger Caldera rim...pitch black...no volcanoes yet visible...immediately join a line of jeeps snaking to higher ground...cover a couple of kms...stop...... read more

TRAVELBLOG'S 10th BIRTHDAY: PARTY IN KL...7-9 APRIL 2012. As I had not received any response to my Oceania Recruitment Drive...I woke up on 1 March 2012 and said in OZ venacular to Denise... "Bugger it...lets go to KL for Easter." "Great idea...I was thinking last night we could go to Vietnam over Easter to meet Cockle." "Mmmm...He'll probably go to KL...let's surprise him there!" Seemed a cool idea to further my quest for enlightenment at the "Holy Shrine" known as TB HQ...on its Holy Day..! Denise...straight onto the internet to book flights from Sydney for Good Friday...yikes only two seats left...gotta hurry...book it...what about a hotel it asked...like the one with the peaked roof...book it...confirm RSVP...done...phew just made it..! As a result we RSVPed for the KL TB's 10th B'day bash on Sunday 8 April 2012. ... read more
