Hello all from Sestri Levanto, near Genova on the coast of Italy, at our lowest quality camping ground yet. Today we packed up camp and went to Pisa - to see the world famous leaning tower of Pisa. Yip - it’s definitely on a massive lean! The grounds around Pisa were really nice so we had a look at all the buildings, and of course the leaning tower. Nothing much to say about the tower other then it looks just like it does in the pictures. I had the typical photo taken with me pushing up the tower. It’s quite funny [View Full Entry]

15th Aug - Venice Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice
Happy Ferragosta Day. Apparently it is a public holiday today (Assumption of the Virgin Mary/Feast of the Assumption) in Austria and Italy - that explains why all the streets and shops were deserted today! Today we travelled from St Gilgen’s, near Salzburg in Austria to Cavallino, near Venice in Italy. It was a pretty long drive - but good to get it over with since all the shops were closed anyway. What made the drive even longer was our good old friends - the thunder and lightning (and yes, there is thunder and lightning now, in fact Daniel is down at [View Full Entry]

Buongiorna. Today we visited Venice a.k.a. Venezia. We woke to a beautiful day, thankfully, and headed across on the bus and boat to Venice, along with all the other tourists. We really enjoyed Venice, as there was no traffic - just people, but there were so many side streets and bridges that you can quickly lose the crowds. After visiting a few of the tourist stands we had seen it all - they all sell the same things - all 500 of them! The city is just like the pictures - narrow cobblestone streets, bridges everywhere, gondola boats everywhere you look, [View Full Entry]

Sunday...a true ‘day of rest’ over here. Almost all shops are shut and streets are deserted so it was an ideal day to travel across Italy to Florence. We decided the other day to skip Rome during this trip and fly there from England instead as we’re a bit short of time. We drove from Venice through Bologna - this looked like a really nice city with great architecture. We had a drive around the city and stopped at a park for lunch. We took a few photos and moved on down to Florence. When we got to Florence we did [View Full Entry]

Hello all from Switzerland somewhere near Lugano, even we don’t know exactly where we are - we just followed the camping ground signs! Another travelling day for us today - all the way from Sestri Levanto in Italy to Lugano in Switzerland. We took some of the back roads through Italy to see the country side on our way to Switzerland. The towns are all quite small yet really close together. They have that real Italian feel with a small town, narrow footpaths, clothes hanging from windows and always an old man or two sitting outside watching everything going by! Daniel [View Full Entry]

Hello again from the camping ground Wolfgangsee in Lindendstrand, St Gilgen. This is our best camping ground yet - free HOT showers, cheap, heaps of room, sunny weather, and a lake to swim in right by the camping ground - all found by accident! We left Salzburg this morning and ending up in Mondsee. Here we got to see more exciting Sound of Music filming locations. We went to the Mondsee Cathedral where the wedding scene between Maria and the Baron was filmed in the movie. The Cathedral was very impressive inside with lots of statues and paintings and gold coloured [View Full Entry]

Today we packed up home, again, and decided to have a look through Innsbruck, since we were there anyway. Yip...well after the massive queue to get anywhere near the city centre we managed to make it, only to find a whole lot of boring concrete buildings, and parking buildings full, so we decided it wasn’t worth stopping for and carried on to Salzburg. We got to Salzburg just after lunch and set up camp. The office is closed during lunch (a semi-common thing around here it seems), so we had some lunch and headed into town. Austrian’s don’t seem to like [View Full Entry]

Hello again - this time from Innsbruck, Austria. I am writing while trying to cook some dinner (actually Daniel is cooking) - it’s really windy and it keeps blowing our cooker out so we have had to move to a more sheltered spot outdoors as they don’t have kitchens in camping grounds in Europe. So today we went and had a look at some more scaffolding with a significant tourist attraction annoyingly in the way. It seems that everything that we want to view and photograph is covered in scaffolding - the castle at Heidelberg, the bridge at Heidelberg, the church [View Full Entry]

11th Aug - Fussen Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Fussen
Tonight we are writing from in our car beside the lake near Fussen watching another thunder storm - so much for summer weather! We packed up camp this morning in Munich and decided to head into the city centre - ummm....yip, that was another mission - you see the Germans, besides driving fast and being a kind-of rude race of people, like to have signs spontaneously along stretches of road which seems to stop when you get to an important intersection. So you start following signs to the ‘zentrum’ and then all of a sudden you’re lost in who-knows-where with not [View Full Entry]

10th August - Dachau Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Dachau
Today we visited the Dachau Concentration camp remains from world war two. It was very interesting and very sobering. Some 200,000 people died in Dachau from 1933-1945. There are now a number of memorial buildings and sculptures on the site of the camp set amongst the remaining buildings, which include barracks, SS buildings, cell block, gas chambers and crematorium. It’s unbelievable what the prisoners were put through in the camp and that mankind can be so cruel to his fellow human race. We ended up spending the whole day at the camp going around the different sites and looking throu [View Full Entry]
