Dan knows enough Spanish to offend people when he tries to speak it. Holly knows enough Spanish to be offended when people speak it to her. They both know enough Italian to obtain wine, beer, and most importantly, cappucino. Together, they've traveled internationally to Belize, Cannes, Nice, Cinque Terre, Sardinia, Cambridge, Frankfurt, Munich, Heidelberg, Prague, Salzburg, and, soon, South America. In North America, they've visited Toronto, Niagara Falls, NYC, Park City, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, Atlanta, Chicago, Savannah, Hilton Head, Charleston, Wilmington (NC), Nags Head, Norfolk/VA Beach, Blacksburg, and many points in and around Washington DC.

Still alive, and surviving on fruit and bread as promised. We had an early 3hr flight to Cuzco yesterday morning and made it in by around 7:15AM. The city is over 11,000 ft above sea level and the air is very thin, so we were feeling a little woozy when we arrived. Luckily we got some altitude sickness pills in the farmácia before leaving Lima, which we have been taking and which seem to help. When we arrived I (Holly) fell into an altitude-induced deep sleep nap for a few hours, which was a little crazy because I couldn´t get up! I guess that´s what carbon monoxide poisoning must feel like... Anyway, aside from the nap-coma and a few headaches and dizzy spells, we are fine. Cuzco is a cute little city that thrives on tourism. ... read more

First, an update on the tv situation: Argentina has this thing nailed. Not only do they provide tv in most restaurant dining areas, but also in the metro stations. Sure, there are little updates at the bottom of the screen to tell you what train is coming and when, but who cares when the game is on? Even the tv in our apartment is on wheels so that you can turn it to face the dining area. We are obviously trying our best to fit in here. But i digress... Our time in Buenos Aires has been largely spent looking for bancos y baños. The stores and restaurants here seem to choose at random whether to accept credit cards, and many bank machines either don´t accept american cards or don´t give American dollars. For example, when ... read more

We arrived in Montevideo on a bus from Colonia, after crossing the bay from Buenos Aires. If the ferry were the USS Minnow, we´d be sunk. Let´s just say we were happy we didn´t have a car down below on the boat. One wave jolted us so badly, you could hear the banging in the hold. Kids screaming, people vomiting in the bathroom...it was awesome. The bus was much less eventful, as we could not see a thing through steamed up windows during the 2.5 hour drive. We learned from the tourism office that a cab to our hotel would be about 90 Uruguayan pesos. So we stopped at the ATM and withdrew $400U, just to have some extra after the cab. We later learned this was equivalent to about $16. So lets do the math ... read more

This will be an ongoing post. Should any other travelers seeking South America fall upon it, hopefully it will serve them well. 1. $5 for a lunch for two people in Lima is probably too good to be true. When in Lima, do NOT eat like the locals. Your stomach will thank you. 2. Get money before you ever leave the airport in Rio. See previous comments. 3. English does not work in Rio. Spanish does not work in Rio. A combination of English, Spanish, pointing, hand gestures, and 3 Portuguese words, however, does work in Rio. 4. NEVER accept the first price you are offered in Rio. Even from your hotel. You need a car to drive you around? $100. Don´t want to pay that? How ´bout a 30% discount? And you can always find ... read more

The negative: We managed to eat something that must not have agreed with our sensitive American digestive systems in Lima. Probably the fruit drink mix that came as part of our 7 peso ($2.50) lunch, or the 4 hour old cream cheese at the hotel happy hour. Possibly an additive effect of a bunch of things. Lima food was great, don´t get us wrong. Every type of chicken we tried was excellent. The positive: Besides the taste? Hmmm...have to think about that one, the stomach issues were pretty bad. The positive is that we arrived in South America with the proper medicine as prescribed by our doctor. And it hasn´t kept us from doing anything we wanted to. The negative: The time zones are odd. Buenos Aires is three hours ahead of Lima, but Rio is ... read more

Hey everyone - We are alive in Rio, and just learned that we´ll get a taste of Carnaval this Friday so we are very excited. The beaches are gorgeous and the people very nice, though we are surprised that the people know more English than they do Spanish, and even the English speakers are few and far between. We spent last night in Copacabana and ate at a Churrascaria that we stumbled upon while looking for an ATM - yes I (Holly) even had a taste of the red meat from Dan´s plate, though I stuck to chicken, pork, and side dishes of which were were millions. After dinner we never found an ATM that accepted our Wachovia cards, and none of the hotels had one that worked, and every ATM in the city closed at ... read more

We have spent two and a half days in Lima and fully enjoyed it. Not much time to write at the moment, but hopefully once we get to Rio tomorrow. Our flight leaves at midnight tonight and stops in Buenos Aires on the way. Hopefully we can sleep, hopefully our stomachs calm down a bit, and hopefully the sunburn fades fast. Back to Miraflores for dinner now, before heading to the airport. Good stories, good food, and good pictures to share; hope you can wait.... read more

We have arrived in Lima, safe and sound. A long day of flying has landed us in the heart of modern Peru. Speaking of modern, upon landing in San Salvador, we entered Club San Salvador. Think hard house music pumping out the speakers of an Airbus. Unexpected, no? We found a reputable taxi driver upon exiting customs that would take us to our hotel for what our trust Eyewitness Travel Peru (EWT in the future) guide said it would cost. Along the way, our driver got very caught up in the quality of Holly´s Spanish, and told us all about Cuzco. He made an attempt to teach us a local dialect, Quechua, which is, to say the least, impossible. He recommended a dish of potatoes, cheese, and corn beer, that we need to try in Cuzco. ... read more

Hey all - We are tying up all our loose ends and getting ready to go. The dogs, plants, cars (with emergency breaks), parking spots, credit cards, passports, visas, backpacks, rentals, hotel rooms, salsa event plans, tango classes, visits with a friend, and camera bags are all in order. We even went to La Tasca the other night to practice our Spanish and get our taste buds prepared. (I should warn you that you may need to use www.wordreference.com to translate parts of the posts that I write.) We hope to have some adventures, and hope that you enjoy reading about them! Hopefully my camera makes it out alive this time so that I can post some photos. Tons of thanks to my in-laws for taking care of Lily and Pedro. We know that they are ... read more
