Blast off is in 25 days heading for the Far East, where Thailand kick-starts our trip followed by: Loas, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur, Borneo, Singapore & Australia.

Whilst Sam slept well, I drifted in & out of an uncomfortable sleep, waking to either a stiff neck or dead wrist from leaning on it for too long. A subconscious reminder that I was supposed to do something before we left Sukhothai played on my thoughts & funnily, it was the pack of waiting taxi drivers that provoked the thought whilst unloading our bags from the bus, in the sweltering afternoon heat - the mobile phone. I was supposed to charge the mobile phone so we could call Dean to get picked up & taken to TK’s, eliminating the need to speak to, or deal with any of the taxi drivers. Luckily my memory served me well enough to remember how much Dean had paid for his taxi to TK’s & so knowing that it ... read more

After waking & leaving late from the Sawadee Guesthouse after breakfast, the last thing we needed was an idle taxi driver to get us through the busy morning traffic of Bangkok - especially as the train we needed to get, only ran once a day. Now accustomed to the crazy driving of the tuk tuk & taxi drivers; weaving in & out of alleyways & driving up the wrong side of the road, we braced ourselves for a speedy journey to the train station. However, not this time, instead, our ‘crazy’ & toothless taxi driver was asleep at the wheel in the middle of a busy cross-junction, with on coming traffic heading towards us. Whether it was the yell to move, or the firm shaking that woke him, he slowly came about & realised where he ... read more

Kanchanaburi We left Bangkok's southern bus terminal heading west, bound for Kanchanaburi. It was a comfortable journey & only took around 4 hours, arriving into Kanchanaburi just after 3 o'clock. As Kieran & Kate had already been to Kanchanaburi, they recommended The Jolly Frog, a backpackers resort where they had stayed. So as soon as we unloaded our bags from the bus, we started walking over to the gang of eagerly awaiting taxi drivers, before being greeted by one of them who broke from the gang & ran over to us. Flapping about in his hand was a knackered old business card for The Jolly Frog, so as fate would have it, we decided The Jolly Frog was our destination of choice, or fate. Ten minutes after loading our bags into the battered old taxi, we ... read more

Ko Phayam The journey from Phuket to Ko Phayam would prove to be a fairly easy one - a bus from Karon to Phuket Town & then a connecting bus from Phuket to Ranong, where we would then get a speed boat to the small & tranquil island of Ko Phayam. The bus from Phuket to Ranong took 6 hours, with one stop off at a smaller, official bus station, where we grabbed some cheap & not so nice food. Stretched legs & refreshments out of the way, we carried on the journey to Ranong, finally arriving at Ranong bus station at 16:00, where we were greeted & picked up by the owner of Vijit’s - the resort we had pre-booked to stay at. We somehow managed to tactically pile all 7 of our back packs ... read more

Phuket - Phuket Province We were due to leave Phi Phi 2:30 pm, bound for Phuket, however we were working to Thai time, which more than often means add 30 minutes - as a minimum. Although this rule should generally be applied in most cases, apart from the trains, I still felt certain that the boat would cast off without me when I decided to run back to the woman at the beginning of the pier to fetch Sam a Banana & Nuttella Pancake… luckily I just made it with 20 minutes to spare. Come 3 o’clock, or there about, we left Phi Phi & headed to Phuket, which would be a 2 & a half hour boat ride. The afternoon sun was hot & it was difficult to escape the sun’s glare unless you relocated ... read more

Ko Phi Phi Don We arrived at Ko Phi Phi later on in morning & was welcomed with the usual mayhem that we were all now accustomed to. Thankfully waiting for us at the pier was Kieran & Barry who had gone straight to Phi Phi from Railey. Phi Phi has no roads, just walk ways to get around, so Barry & Kieran had arranged for a taxi man from their resort to come a meet us & taxi our baggage as it was about a 10 minute walk from the pier to the Tropical Garden Resort. As there are no roads, the taxi was in fact a guy pushing what can best be described as a big wheel barrow. As we weaved our way through the busy & hot walk ways of Phi Phi, we ... read more

Ko Lanta The journey from Railey took 3 hours on a boat. Whilst on the boat Dean, Sam & I enjoyed a Chang or 2, where we also booked our accommodation with a crazy, yet pleasant Thai woman for the Green Garden Beach resort, Klong Khong beach - which proved to be a sensible move as it saved us a lot of time, hassle & money. As at most piers, there is always an element of chaos & madness as new travellers disembark on the island. This was no exception. Something we hadn’t yet experienced however was docking beside 3 other boats & then literary jumping from each boat (all of varying sizes, making the whole exercise that ever more difficult) with our back packs on & then was hoisted up onto the pier. Once we ... read more

After our wild partying on Ko Pha-Ngan, we decided that we would head for the beautiful & scenic, Railay - just 45 minutes in a long tail boat, from the main land Krabi. But before we could get to Railay, we had some more travelling to do, this time in the form of boat & bus. Also another reason we needed to leave Ko Pha-Ngan was because a storm had hit the island, which now seems to be a regular weather pattern following the full moon. The storm brought endless spells of rain along with rough sea's - just what we needed before we left. However, thankfully & unknowingly we had booked our boat ticket for one of the bigger boats, which meant we were one-of-two boats able to leave the island as all the other ... read more

Before I start on our travels to Ko Pha-Ngan, I forgot one Bangkok story, which I've rightly been told off for. I mean what was I thinking? One of the highlights of Bangkok was the fish-foot-massage. As weird as this sounds, it is. To keep it simple, a very large fish tank that has been adapted to allow one to stick their feet in with relative ease i.e. whilst sitting down. The 100's of 'Dr Fish' then proceed to nibble away at all of the dead skin on your feet, which has to be said, is at first, a very bizzare sensation, however one that you can just about coupe with - for anyone who's interested, refer to the pictures for our 2nd blog 'Arrived...' With that out of the way, back to our Train, Bus ... read more
