Dan and Bryon

Dan and I are riding Kawasaki KLRs from the Washington D.C. area north and west through Canada to Alaska. Then we will ride back down through BC to the Pacific Northwest. We will meander through the American West into Mexico, and down through Central America and into South America. We will probably go all the way down to Ushuaia before driving back north to Ecuador.

We got a bit of a late start in the morning, because we were going to stay with Nick, and he was at work until that evening and we onlyhad about an hour or two of riding to get to his place in Rodondo Beach. We rode down the 1, which skirts the coast from Ventura through Malibu to Santa Monica. We stopped off in Santa Monica and realized that there wasn't anything of interest there for us. We had both been there before, and it was just a bunch of shops selling us things we don't need. We then headed down to Venice Beach, where we parked the bikes and went for a stroll and check out the vibrant, dynamic culture that is Venice Beach. The shops along the board-walk were a stady repition of ... read more

O.K. Sorry for the LONG delay, i know that I'm about 5 weeks behind, so I will try to get caught up as best I can. So, to keep it interesting, I will continue to drink beer as I write, so maybe it will get funnier as it goes on! We left Las vegas (cue Sheryl Crow) on a windy afternoon heading North then West to Death Valley. The wind was pretty strong and gusty varying from head-on to straight across the highway. This made the ride take a little longer than anticipated. We got into the park and quickly began to decend to over a hundred feet below sea level. We Drove around the park and found a field of sand dunes and decided that it was time for a nice break. We took our ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful, clear, but cold morning. We rode around The park for a bit and bounced. There wasn't much to see and everything cool was a day hike. The rout we went on took us south into Arizona through monument Valley. We got back into Utah around sun-down and decided that we needed a motel for the evening. We were in Kanab, not much going for this city. We asked around for the cheapest motel and were pointed to the Sun-n-Sands Motel where we were greeted by a twitchy bearded old biker dude that was EXTREMELY welcoming. We sacked out for the night and then got an early start. We headed out towards Zion National Park. We had both been there before and were only going this way because we had a ... read more

I ended up staying an extra day in Crested Butte. Dan ran into a little electrical trouble in Durango, so I assumed he would take longer to get to Moab. He actually got everything fixed and was on the road in a couple hours. This gave him the morning by him self in Moab to go mountain bike the 'Whole Enchilada'. I said goodbye to my brother, sister-in-law and nephew early in the morning and then headed out to Moab on a beautiful two-lane highway. I got to the Lazy Lizard in Moab around three, checked in and went to explore the town. I found the local micro-brew pub where I watched a little college football before heading back to the hostel. Dan had just got back from the 24 mile downhill ride that is the ... read more

We left Boise just after noon last Wednesday, driving towards Idaho City the back way on Rocky Canyon Road, a dirt road that cuts through the mountins. We made it to Idaho City in about an hour and decided to check out the town a bit. At the end of Main Street was a saloon called Diamond Lil's where we stopped in for a beer. The place was decorated with all kinds of old and foreign currency (a hobby of mine!). The owners close for the winter and fly down to Jaco, Costa Rica. We got talking about living in Latin America and they told us where they hang out every day in Jaco, and we agreed to meet up when we pass through. We got back on the road a little late, setting off to ... read more

So I made the bee-line for the 10:30 ferry. I get there at 10:25 and the customs guy starts in with the questions. Any food?no(YES) any alchohol? no (YES) and firearms? no(actually i didnt this time), any bear mace? no (YEP).So I get on the ferry now feeling pretty hungover but with a new sense of vigor for the road. My first stop in Washington was at Patti's seafood for some local oysters. I slurped em down and chit chatted with Pattis about the indians and fishing and the way things were and are now with it. I mentioned I wanted to try Geoduck and she just gave me some to cook up later. Thanks Patti! Another 30 minutes rides later and I see a sign for Oysterfest!! Already 12 deep, I proceeded to eat every ... read more

o About 20 miles outside of Whistler, I see the best view Ive seen yet on the trip! This huge mountain range with a giant glacier on it. I sat on the side of the road and stared in awe for about 30 minutes.(see pics which wont do it justice). Then I headed into Vancouver which is my first big city in more than a month. I passed through downtown, past the stadiums, had some amazing thai food, then I wanted to get out of there. Cities are stressful, wheres the forest again? So I booked a ferry to Nainamo on Vancouver Island with the hopes of doing the whole island the next day before it rained. I got in and stayed in a hotel/hostel. Next day, im off to do the whole island and it ... read more

So this is the part where we split up for awhile so this blog with just be Dans travels. I headed out of Smithers/Telkwa area around 4 oclock and got about 180 miles to Vanderhoof before I froze my ass off. I took refuge in the woods beyond town. It rained ALL NIGHT LONG and my leaky tent and I paid the price. I ended up staying awake pretty much all night trying to avoid the water seeping in and leaking down. By morning, it was 40 degrees and I lay there in a catatonic state in a damp bag longing for the sun...which never came. So I pack up and limp into Vanderhoof to dry out in a laundromat. Steering feels a little funny then next thing I know at 60 mph the back ... read more

We are in my hometown of Boise, Idaho. I had already gone over 700 miles on my seriously damaged rear sprocket with about 200 more to go before getting to the cycle salvage in Williams Lake, BC, when I got to Prince George again. It was cold dark and rainy when I got to PG, so I decided to dive into a motel and hot the road early in the morning in hopes to get my repairs done and make it all the way to Vancouver by evening. Just as I was pulling away from a stop light my clutch cable snapped! I walked to the McDonald's nearby where I asked a couple that was just finishing breakfast for a ride to the Kawasaki dealership on the edge of town. Surprised, and a little cautiously the ... read more

Yes we are alive. We left our friends in Wasilla to go up to Hatcher's Pass before heading to Anchorage. Hatcher's Pass was a nice view. We had a couple errands to run in Anchorage. I needed a new part for my clutch lever, and we needed to exchange some stuff at REI.Dan switched out the hatchet for one with the saw that is in the handle and I exchanged my boots, the old ones soles were coming off. We asked a few locals what there was to do in Anchorage, and they all said that they have to get out of town to do anything fun. The only concession was to ride up to the mountains to the East of town for a nice view on our way down to the Kenai Peninsula. We went ... read more
