Hola a todos, The last week of September was "la semana del deporte" (sports week) in Santander. Various sports clubs and gyms worked with the city to organize a wide variety of free activities and I participated in several events. The Real Sociedad de Tenis de la Magdalena, a very elite tennis club in Santander with RED CLAY courts, was hosting an open city tennis championship. I entered the tournament so that I could play some tennis for free and experience playing on red clay courts for the first time! I was also curious to see what the level of play would be in the tournament and was thinking it would be great to perhaps have the chance to meet some players my level. The tournament started on Monday night and went all week through Saturday ... read more

Hey everyone, Slowly getting myself up to date with the blog... Two weeks ago I returned to Guardo to visit all my friends, former colleagues and students from last year and had an absolutely wonderful weekend. I caught an early bus from Santander on Friday morning and changed buses in Aguilar de Campoo, a town on the eastern edge of Palencia. I had about an hour and a half before catching the bus to Guardo so I spent the time walking around Aguilar. It's a small town with about the same population as Guardo but is much more attractive with a charming historic center. Up on a hill that overlooks the town there are the ruins of a castle and there is also a Romanesque church. When I arrived in Aguilar it was quite foggy out ... read more

Hola a todos!! So far since arriving in Santander I've gone on two very fun day trips within Cantabria with a friend that my roommate Alissa made last year in Santander. Javi is a "santanderino" (from Santander) and our second week in Santander Alissa and I went with him and some of his friends to a beach near Santander called Playa de Covachos. Much more used to flat coastlines, like most of the coastline in the eastern United States, I'm continually awed by the rocky and cliff-lined coasts in northern Spain. This beach was a cove surrounded by cliffs and I thought it was gorgeous. We went in the afternoon and stayed for a few hours. It was a windy day and I decided not to swim but we did walk out to the rocky outcropping ... read more

Hola a todos!! I've now been in Santander for almost 4 weeks and things have been going absolutely great! Until about a week and a half ago when I moved into an apartment I didn't have much internet access so now I can finally take the time for blog updates. Living in Santander is such a HUGE change from Guardo last year and I'm taking full advantage of it. I'm already playing on an ultimate frisbee team here and I've enrolled in an Italian class at the Official Language School which begins next week. There are Official Language schools in cities all over Spain where it's possible to take courses in English, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese. I had to apply to take the course outside of the regular registration period and I had a really ... read more

Hola a todos! Two weeks ago I went to the concert of a Spanish rock band that I like a lot, Fito y Fitipaldis. They have been on tour in Spain since January after they released their latest album "Antes de que cuente diez" (meaning: Before 10 is counted or Before you count to 10) last fall. The concert was in Zamora, the capital city of one of the provinces in Castilla y León that borders Portugal. I went to the concert with one of the teachers that works at the other high school in Guardo, Juan, and his friends. He's from Zamora and returns there every weekend, so when I found out that one of Fito's concerts was going to be in Zamora, it turned out Juan was interested in going too so I arranged ... read more

Hola a todos, Last weekend I visited Santander, the capital city of the region of Cantabria, located on the northern coast of Spain. For the 2010-11 school year I will be spending another year in Spain working as an assistant English teacher, only this time in Cantabria. I've not yet received my specific school placement for next year but I'm hoping to live in Santander because it's a lively city in a beautiful area on the coast. Cantabria as a region is small enough that most of the people in my program are able to live in the city, regardless of where they are teaching. I wanted to know more about the program in Cantabria and was able to get in touch with a girl in my program named Alissa who is living in the city ... read more

Hola de nuevo, This is my last blog entry about my trip with my parents. We left Ronda at noon on Tuesday and arrived in Granada around 3 pm. We were staying in a hotel up on the hill near to where the Alhambra is located. As usual it took awhile to park the car and we had a late lunch at a restaurant near our hotel. After resting for a bit we left the hotel around 6:30 and took a bus down to the historic center of Granada. We walked near the cathedral and then entered the Albayzín (the old Muslim quarter of the city). Here the houses are whitewashed like in many places in Andalucía and the streets are winding and cobblestoned. This area is below the Alhambra and faces it, so it has ... read more

Hola a todos, So we left Arcos de la Frontera on Monday morning to drive to Gibraltar. The day was cloudy (the only cloudy day of our trip!) and extremely windy. The province of Cádiz receives a lot of wind I think mostly because it is near the strait of Gibraltar and apparently some people have to receive psychological treatment in the province because all the windy days make them go kind of crazy! The drive took less than 2 hours and when we drove through the passport checkpoint, they looked at our passports but didn't stamp them which was too bad...a Gibraltar stamp would have been pretty cool! We parked the car in a garage and set out to explore the town. We got a map at the tourism office and were told that we ... read more

¡Saludos a todos! In Spain, Easter is celebrated for an entire week, beginning with Palm Sunday and ending with Easter Sunday, known as Semana Santa, or Holy Week. In Castilla y León this year school kids and teachers had off Thursday and Friday of Semana Santa and the whole entire following week (so from Thursday, April 1st through Sunday, April 11th.) Mom and Dad came to visit me in Spain during this time and we traveled around Andalucía! It was so good to see them after being in Spain for 7 months and not seeing anyone in my family since last September. I met my parents in Madrid on Thursday morning, April 1st, at the airport and we took a high speed train to Cádiz, arriving around 4:30 pm. After checking into our hotel in the ... read more

Hola a todos! I turned 23 on Wednesday last week and it ended up being a great week. On Monday, I went skiing in León with my friend Pablo at a small ski station called San Isidro. It's about an hour and 15 minute drive from Guardo. The weather ended up being perfect--really sunny and not too windy or cold. It was also great to go there on a Monday because there were hardly any people there and especially towards the end of the day we had some of the slopes practically to ourselves! I had gone skiing here once before in February on a Saturday with Iris, the P.E. teacher who works at my school, and one of his friends, Jesús. That day had also been a lot of fun but the difference in the ... read more
