I couldn't come all the way to Australia and not see the Capital. Well to be honest i wish i hadn't! There is not much to do or see in Canberra. Canberra was a purposely built capital city. It's rather strange, very clinical and a bit like a ghost town. Where were all the people?! Not really much to say about it really. We stayed at a very basic motel but all we really need is a bed i suppose. We arrived at 9pm Friday night and just watched a bit of tv before going to bed. It had been a long day travelling from Melbourne. Saturday we headed into the centre of Canberra. It was a Saturday afternoon, where were all the people, shouldn't they be in the town centre at the shops?! Who know's? ... read more

We done a runner from our hostel in Mildura cos we owed them money!! Ha ha! Don't worry tho it was only $16 so i'm pretty sure we're not one of Australia's Most Wanted!! Anyway, we flew down to Melbourne from a tiny airport (maybe the same size as Dundee's!). We were meant to be getting the bus from Mildura to Melbourne bus as usual we left it too late and it was sold out so had to fly down on a rather small 74 seater plane! We stayed with my family at their house in Endeavour Hills which is just outside Melbourne. We were all taken very good care of by my uncle Ian, aunty Alexandra and cousin Katrina and not forgetting Darren (Katrina's boyfriend). We are all looking very healthy after being fed some ... read more

It's been a while since i've put a blog up but really i haven't been up to much lately. We are now in Mildura which is in Victoria. The reason we came here was for work. We've been here over a month now but haven't made much money! Usually i make enough to cover rent and food for the week if i'm lucky!! We had a couple of days without work when we first arrived but then we were over the moon when we were told there was work available if we wanted it. Of course we wanted it, but we quickly regreted it! Day 1 we are picked up by Ray, Turkish bloke, who is just a contractor, so basically took us to all the crap jobs noone wants cos he knows he'll make money ... read more

We spent just over a week in Darwin. It was so hot there and very humid. Most of our days were spent at the library, free internet so had to make good use of it. When we weren't there we were usually found at the hostel across the road from ours using their facilities, the bar! Happy hour (or hours 4-7pm) jugs of ice cold beer for $8. Friends from apple picking Becky and Ailbhe stayed there so they joined us every afternoon for a few drinks too. Thursdays and Sundays were the famous Mindil Beach Market. We headed along there twice, took about a 20 minute walk. I have never seen so many food stalls and there was even a road kill stall. I have no idea why anyone would willingly eat food that they ... read more

We managed to get a campervan relocation from Cairns to Darwin. We don't have to pay for it cos the company need the van in Darwin. All we had to pay was the petrol and then they also give us $210 petrol money back. 6 days to travel 3000km. We had to head back down to Townsville cos that is the only route we were allowed to take cos the other roads are too bad. We didn't quite make it down to Townsville the first day cos it got too dark and we're not insured to drive at night, too many roos etc crossing the roads and they can seriously damage the car if you hit them! We stopped off at IGA supermarket to get our usual pasta, next stop the bottle shop for our beer ... read more

We left Bundaberg and headed up to Rockhampton, which is the beef capital of Australia. We spent 5 nights in a little hostel run by Robby, lovely little woman. One night we headed down to the river to have a bbq, cheap snags and even cheaper goon. Crocs have been spotted in the river so we decided to throw down some sausages but unfortunately they did not take our bait. It's ok we were too far up for them to get us if one did happen to appear. Me and Jen went to see Wolverine one afternoon, which we both loved! Then we headed to the local park for a walk. There was a lovely waterfall so i thought i would go closer to the waters edge to get a better picture and then i saw ... read more

After Rainbow Beach we headed a further 2 hours up the coast to Hervey Bay. We booked ourselves into the Woolshed Backpackers, it was a great place to stay. Me, Ross and Jen all had single beds, a great change from bunk beds. The first night we had the room to ourselves and took full advantage of the tv/dvd in the room. We took a trip to the local Woolworths to buy some cheapo noodles and then to the bottle shop to get some cider to enjoy whilst watching some DVD's. We booked our 2 day guided tour to Fraser Island at the hostel and headed there on Friday. We were picked up at 7.30am and headed for the local ferry to take us on a 50 min cruise to Fraser Island. There was 17 people ... read more

Thought i'd better write a blog and keep everyone up to date cos i've not been here for a bit. I flew down to Sydney from Brisbane on 7th April to meet my Dad and Elaine. We stayed in Sydney for a few nights in a nice little guest house at Potts Point which is beside Kings Cross. This place was luxury to me! I had a single room all to myself. I thought i might take bad being in a room on my own since i hadn't done that since October but it was brilliant! I was the tour guide and lets just say we pretty much covered everything and dad and elaine were shattered by the end of the first day! We then flew done to Melbourne to visit family. My uncle Ian lives ... read more

My apple picking career is over for the time being! Not sure how i will survive with not getting up at 3.15am any more!! I've had a great 5 weeks but i'm very happy to be leaving, i need a rest. What i'll miss the most is our Saturday nights down the local pub. Last Saturday we had a pj party. I donned my pj's, messed my hair up and smudged mascara all over my face, what a pretty site! I drank way too much cider as usual and felt rather rough Sunday morning. Made loads of great friends here, Room 5 rules! We are all heading up the coast to Cairns but will be a few days behind eachother but we will have a reunion in Cairns if not before. Just a short entry so ... read more

Anyone who knows me well enough should know that my favourite apple is a Granny Smith....well i hate them now!! Eventually after a few weeks of sitting around Brisbane spending way to much money we got offered a job apple picking. Obviously we took it, how hard could it be.....very!! We took a bus from Brisbane and 3 hours later we were dropped off at the Big Apple in a place called Thulimbah (that is where the orchard is). 10 of us started together that day, only 4 of us left (not bad going for 4 weeks of work). We joined the other girls on the bus and Tony (the orchard owner) drove us back to our new hostel in a tiny place called Wallangarra. I found out the other day that Wallangarra/Jennings has a population ... read more
