Crap Adventurer - Paul

Paul My nickname stems from my habit of going out on my days off and having mini-adventures. I can have adventures just by going to the shops. Me and the other half are planning a round the world trip for the future though (the "Ultimate Crap Adventure"), and this will serve as a record of my current travels, and an incentive to save for the big things to come.

Stockholm is amazing. Built on a number of islands, and with each island having it’s own “feel”, there was lots to explore, see, do and experience. It was a shame I only really had a day and a night! In a way it was good though, due to the near crippling prices of Sweden in general. I was staying on the island of Södermalm, to the south of Gamla Stan (the Old Town), and it was very much a bohemian area of town. Hundreds of trendy young things, shopping, drinking, eating, and hanging around having fun. On my way to the [View Full Entry]

I was in Uppsala for a short time, but it was my whole reason for coming to Sweden in the first place. Being there for a job interview, I didn’t really know if I’d have any time to see anything, but I got lucky. Landing on Thursday morning, they only needed me for the interview in the afternoon, meaning I could explore on Friday morning before hopping on the train to Stockholm. I wasn’t impressed at first, and was staying in a hotel opposite the train station, which at present is a building site - not a great first impression. However, [View Full Entry]

We got into Berlin at about 5 pm, and it was already dark. After negotiating the S-bahn whilst having no idea where we were going, we got to our hotel in Friedrichshahn in the East of the city, and immediately hit the streets in search of food. Easyjet can have that effect on people. Berlin has been, in my lifetime, a divided city, with even its recent history far too complex to go into in a travelblog, but there used to be East (Soviet) and West (erm, Western), and a big wall between the two. We decided to walk up to [View Full Entry]

Scottish Pride, taken mainly for the flag
The journey to Inverness from Glasgow is one that I enjoy. The slow-moving A9 can be frustrating to the locals who battle tourists on a daily basis, but as a tourist the drive from city to lowlands, right up to the Highlands, seeing the scenery chang, always makes me smile and appreciate how lucky I am to live in Scotland, so close to all this beauty. Also, the further North you go the stranger the place names become (personal favourites include Auchtermuchty, and the River Garry which makes me snigger like a schoolboy and make bum jokes), and the number of [View Full Entry]

Home farm, Glendaruel. That's real smoke in the chimney!
With it being Easter weekend, Adam's parents decided to come up from Harrogate to a cottage they visit regularly in the little village of Glendaruel. Living in Glasgow, we were going to drive around, as it only takes about an hour, and stay for the night. It's a lovely part of Scotland, near Bute and the western highlands, and it's a drive that I'd love to do more regularly, except for one minor sticking point - Tourists! Now I know we were tourists this weekend too, but our route takes us up the western shores of Loch Lomond, an incredibly picturesque [View Full Entry]
