Cookiek - Terry-Ann and Buddy Kibbles

Terry-Ann and Buddy Kibbles In 2008 I decided to stuff everything else and started travelling, always taking along my long suffering six year old son, who would quite frankly, much rather be sat at home in front of the playstaion eating ice cream, and sometimes my husband, who would also much rather be sat at home in front of the playstaion eating ice cream. We only do independent travel, which sometimes has its difficulties especially as I usually travel alone with my kid, but its always exciting none the less.

March to October 2008 took us to Australia (East coast, traveling Sydney to Brisbane) New York, France, the Netherlands, Iceland, Italy and Morocco. Not all in one big trip, but with a few weeks at home between each country. Not the best idea in hindsight, it turned out to be far more exhausting than doing it all in one go.

February to April 2009 we did a 10 week trip, taking in New Zealand (travelling the South Island in a campervan), Australia (Brisbane and the Whitsundays) and China (Hong Kong, Guilin, yangshou, Xian and Beijing).

2010, we plan to finally travel on the trans-siberian railway. I was going to do it this year, but decided I wanted to see New Zeland instead. I blame Lord of the Rings. Other trips along the way will include travelling across Canada and Europe by train and trips to South America and (when Bud is old enough for the insurance!) a trip to Antarctica. Oh, and Thailand. And Japan. Just everywhere really. Or until Barclaycard tell me to go away and stop pestering them for money, it's verging on staliking now :)

Sometimes in these blogs I may make jokes you do not like, especially if you are particually patriotic about whichever country I am blogging, sometimes I am brutaly honest if I have had a crap day and want to vent, and most of the time I cannot manage to contain my potty mouth for more than a few paragraphs. I welcome feedback and comments, but not of the 'please keep your comments about my country to yourself' variety. This is my blog, written by me and containing my personal opinions and observations after all.

Most importantly, I apologise whole heartedly for the appaling spelling, grammar and punctuation contained in this blog. I type far too fast and am far too lazy to spell check, especially when trying to keep a firm grip on a tired, grumpy six year old and a giant backpack in some dodgy internet cafe! If anyone comments with complaints about my grasp on the written language, I shall force feed Buddy a six pack of fruit shoots and send him round to your house to do his best tazmanian devil impersonation.

Big news. I have found a foolproof way of not giving into jetlag. As soon as you arrive home, begin renovating a room. Painting walls is far less boring when you are so tired you are hallucinating that the Seven Dwarves and Spongebob Squarepants are helping you. Things that have amused me no end since returning home; - Standing in front of my washing machine at four o’clock this morning, jet lagged to the eyeballs but unable to sleep, getting frustrated trying to work out where to put the coins in to make it work, as I have become so used [View Full Entry]

A good job too, as we are begining to resemble them after all this wonderful food!
Sometimes, when I am far away from home, feeling a little bit ill (I am now at the tail end of bird flu, thanks for caring) and having fallen over/down numerous toilets/been sick in public and generally humiliated myself for the hundredth time in a week, all I want for a bit of comfort is a ham sandwich. So, imagine my delight, when we stumbled across a café in Beijing with ham sandwiches on its menu! I don’t think I have ever been so excited over something so silly. Then imagine my crestfallen little face when said sandwich arrived at the [View Full Entry]

Ok, so actually, all this blog should really contain no words, just a zillion smiley faces and a thousand photos. We camped out on the Great Wall last night, and it was amazing, one of the best experiences of my life. I have had the hugest grin on my face all day, and even Buddy can’t believe he has done something so fantastic, I can only hope he remembers it when he’s older. A couple of little tips to remember though, if you ever find yourself at the base of the wall preparing to spend the night under the stars; 1) [View Full Entry]

We have come to quite like Xi’an. Aside from the Whitsundays, this is the longest time I have spent in one place during any of my travels. At first, it was a little daunting - it’s very busy, the traffic never seems to let up and the city is a surging mass of bodies and push bikes whichever way you turn - but we are relaxed into it now. We have learned to cross the roads as the locals do, i.e. just forget everything you ever learned about the green cross code and just go for it! The smog here can [View Full Entry]

The last couple of days in Yangshou, I ended up getting really ill. I came down with a nasty cold, high temperature, sore throat, shivers and shakes, the works. I had had a bit of a niggling throat for a couple of days before hand that I thought wasn’t going to come to anything, but being up in the clouds on the rice terraces, freezing cold and soaked through finished me off, and the niggling throat turned into a full on cold. Stupidly, I hadn’t brought any medicines with me, as I never get ill (nor does Bud) so we had [View Full Entry]

In the ‘long hair’ Huanglou Yao Village in the Ping’An rice terrace fields, they have a tradition, where they offer you tea, and if you take two chopsticks off the tray to stir it, it means you must stay the night with a family in the village. When our guide first mentioned it to us, I thought it was just a funny quip, but as our morning at the village went on, and I heard more and more warnings, I learnt that it was actually true, and that if you picked up two chopsticks, you would not be allowed to leave [View Full Entry]

Guangzhou We arrived in China by way of rail, traveling from Hong Hum to Guangzhou, where I promptly managed to fall down a toilet, get my foot stuck and twist my ankle getting it free, and then had to take a taxi to our accommodation with my right shoe covered in pee, because me being me, I had picked the one with a broken flush. In my defense, it was a very small toilet cubical, and it had one of those god awful hole in the floor toilets, the kind I had blocked out of my memory after using one too [View Full Entry]

So, we have made it on to the last leg of our journey, and while I am excited about all the things we will experience in China, I am also a little sad. Sad that in four weeks time I will be back at home (still not even the slightest pang of home sickness!), and I still have that awful feeling of loss when I leave Australia. Buddy is missing Alexandra and Jessica so much, and I just keep thinking how great it would be to live down the road from Kim. Oh well, just have to go back out there [View Full Entry]

It is very nearly time to go, and I don’t want to! I love Australia, and we have had an amazing time here, as always. We stayed one final night with Kim in Brisbane, and I think I am already coming down with post Australia depression, and even though I am not headed home, I still feel really sad to be leaving. It’s even worse than last time, as I am even more comfortable here now. To top it all off, I met a family from Essex yesterday who have been living out here with their three young kids for six [View Full Entry]

Oh my gosh, I am in heaven! We are staying on Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, and it is simply stunning. I take back everything I have ever said about places I want to live, because I want to live on this Island for the rest of my life! I cannot describe how beautiful it is here. After all the travelling, these past few days are the first time I have felt like I am on a ‘holiday’ holiday. It’s been great just hanging out by the pools, going to the beach, sitting on out huge balcony overlooking the bay. There [View Full Entry]
