From Kampot it is an easy day trip up to Bokor Hill Station. The road is a rocky uphill climb by 4WD. Bokor was built in 1925 by the French for a coastal mountain retreat and includes a hotel, casino, Catholic church and a small get away home for the King. Abandonded decades ago, these buildings were also occupied by the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970's. As we wandered around the old hotel and church our guide assured us the area was clear of landmine's. Our trip also included a trek to some nearby waterfalls. In the near future, there [View Full Entry]

This is my new friend, Doit. He is eight years old and he has studied English for four months. He goes to Cambodian school in the morning and English school in the evenings. Between schools he sells bracelets and fruit on the beach to earn money and pay for his English school. Cambodian school is free, English school costs $7 a month. Doit and I spoke to each other a couple of times a day for a few days and became friends. When I told him I would be leaving he said he would miss me and would be sad. I [View Full Entry]

Kampot is a small riverside town just a couple of hours from Sihanoukville. We thought in the beginning we would only pass through but we stayed a few days. We bicycled through town , passed by a Wat and the monks waved us in. We chatted for a while, they offered to show us their temple where the story of Buddha was painted on the walls and ceiling. It was beautiful, colors fantastic. Kampot is a sleepy town now but it must have been something back in the day. The once beautiful French Colonial architecture is crumbling down and is gradually [View Full Entry]

This is our third visit to Thailand and when in Bangkok we enjoy staying in Chinatown. It's off the beaten path for most Western tourists, ususally more Asian tourists stay in this area. We had a great day in Chinatown getting adjusted to the city again, taking in the sights, people, sounds and smells. We were surprised at how much we remembered from our visit last year and just took our time walking around the neighborhood and markets. By day, Chinatown is one huge shopping place where one can buy everything from auto parts to designer handbags. Food is everywhere you [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Bangkok on Monday night. It was a long trip - 7 hour drive, 14 hour flight, 3 hour layover, 5 hour flight. Stayed in Chinatown the first couple of days to get reacquainted with Bangkok. Have had a blast walking around the markets and people watching. Food is fantastic here and just what we remembered. Cliff brought the pedometer and we walked over 10 miles just yesterday! We will update later today with pics and more... Ruthie & Cliff [View Full Entry]

The first day of our 14 month adventure began on May 1st with the arrival of our good friend Brendan to celebrate the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. It ended six days later after many cocktails, good music, late nights and early mornings. As usual, we passed a good time! With only four days left before we turn our house over to a great couple and their daughter, we started packing and cleaning hoping all would be finished in time. Cliff took time out to prepare himself for the trip by getting a really big tattoo from Don at Eye [View Full Entry]
