Sorry that we have not been able to add pictures in quite some time. We posted some new stories for now and hope to get the pictures up within the next couple of days. If we cannot get them on the blog, we may just make an album without captions on a different site (this will save us a lot of time). We have been camping in Norway and have had little computer access. We will be going on a few tours soon, which may also hinder our time for posting. We should be arriving at hostels with free internet within [View Full Entry]

There were a lot of street musicians playing a wide variety of instruments around the Royal Mile area.
Today we woke up, packed, and walked to the bus station. Jens had a flight that left out of the same airport 1 hour after ours (to get back to Bergen), so we all traveled together. The airport process went smoothly, though saying goodbye was tough. We had a FANTASTIC time in Norway and sincerely thank Jens, Ellen, and Jens' mother for being so hospitable. We are so lucky to have had them to help us get around and see everything we got to see! We flew to Edinburgh today. We dropped off our bags at the hostel and walked along [View Full Entry]

This was a burial ship for a wealthy Viking woman and her servant girl.
Today we woke up at 8:30 with plans to go to Oslo museums. Our first stop was the Viking Ship Museum. There were 3 Viking ships that had been burial ships. They had been well preserved and many artifacts were on display. We then went to the Folk Museum. It was very similar to our Genesee Country Museum. There were houses, churches, and other buildings brought to the site from different time periods and different places in Norway. Inside the buildings were tools and other artifacts used from the time period. Whenever repairs are done or replicas are made to make [View Full Entry]

Today we went to a free airshow at the airfield we could see from Jens' roof. We met up with Terje and watched for over 4 hours. Of course we all got sunburned, but it was a sunny day and people always get funny sunburns when they are looking up at the sky all day. We were going to meet up with Joachim and Lars (Norwegian friends Christine made through her co-worker Sylvia this past January in Spencerport). However, we acquired free tickets to a soccer game in Lillestrom. We rescheduled with Joachim since we will be in Oslo then anyways. [View Full Entry]

Today we set our alarms for 8:00 but we were slow getting up. We ate bread and Nutelli for breakfast and then cleaned up the cabin. We had to buy special coins for showering. One coin was good for 5 minutes of hot water. We each had one. Our shower was quick, but effective. Last night while we were looking at the scenery, Jens had started to say, "Tomorrow, how about we" and Christine interjected sarcastically with, "try to climb up that mountain?". On several occasions now, Jens will say that he wants to climb to the top of a "small [View Full Entry]

Everything was beautifully in bloom in this area.
While we got ready this morning, Jens went to the store to get some breakfast. He got some fruit, crackers, bread, and Nutatti (like Nutella, a hazelnut chocolate spread for bread and crepes). The loaves of bread are very hearty. They are a meal within themselves. Since we decided to move on to a different place, we drove 3 and a half hours North to the city of Ålesund. We got out of the car, Jens saw a mountain peak, and said "Let's climb to the top of that one!!!" We thought he was joking. He wasn't. So we walked to [View Full Entry]

It had 2 bedrooms, 7 beds, a kitchen, bathroom (without shower) and spacious living area. It was very cute and cozy.
Today we woke up and decided to move on to another site. We prepared leftovers for brunch while we cleaned up the cabin. Jens thought it would be nice for us to see the fjords up north and visit the glacier museum. We saw spectacular sites as we wound around mountain edges and in and out of valleys. We took a ferry crossing Sognefjorden. It was a 20 minute ferry ride. The museum was small, but informative. We watched a virtual movie of some ice climbers on the Jostedalsbreen (glacier) that was filmed by a helicopter. We also learned about the [View Full Entry]

This is what needs to be done when the only shoes available are sandals and there is snow outside. Socks then grocery bags then more socks with a little duct tape. Classy.
Today we got ready for an exciting day of hiking. It was a perfect day to hike, but could have resulted in total catastrophe. Our first issue was Christine's footwear. She only has Teva hiking sandals for this trip. However, we were in snowy areas. So she put on socks, then grocery bags made into boots with duct tape, then another pair of socks and then her sandals. It worked perfectly, and prevented freezing feet. On the way, we heard a thumping noise from Jens' car after hitting a bump in the road. Christine immediately thought of the noise her car [View Full Entry]

Today we had our alarms set for 9:00 since we had to be out of our hostel by 10:30. When we woke up, our middle-aged, lady roommate from England immediately offered to make us tea with the kettle she had brought with her. She excitedly offered her room service (which we couldn't turn down even if we had wanted to) and she served us tea in bed. We got ready, got our bags on, and walked to Jens' apartment. The walk involved climbing up steep stairs, lots of steep stairs. We took frequent breaks. While climbing the last set, a group [View Full Entry]

We took a funicular up the mountain and walked back down.
Happy Birthday to Kim's Little Sister Jayna! Today Jens and Ellen showed us around the city of Bergen. We got ready, had lunch, and waited for them to come and get us (since we didn't know where we were). We took another funicular to the top of the mountain to get a view of the whole city. Bergen is a small and historical looking city. We took some pictures and then walked down the mountain on a winding road. We then walked all over the oldest section of city. They showed us the apartment they will move into in August and [View Full Entry]
