Welcome to the Alhambra Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada
Described by Lonely Planet as “the stuff of fairy tales” The Alhambra is one of the must-see attractions in Granada. Unfortunately, with all must-see attractions, The Alhambra attracts thousands of visitors and bulging tour groups everyday, so for us, the promised fairy tale didn’t quite live up to expectations. Tickets are sold on a quota system and it is advised to book a ticket in advance during peak season or arrive very early to purchase tickets on the day of your visit. Being low season we arrived an hour before the gates were due to open. We weren’t too c [View Full Entry]

Colours of Seville Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville
We began our trip in Seville where we spent a few days checking out the sights and dodging the occasional shower. We liked - Streets lined with orange trees - covered in fruit, even in December. Getting lost in Barrio de Santa Cruz. The town's old Jewish Quarter. A maze of skinny streets and colourful old buildings. We spent hours exploring this area. The colourful tiles at the weird Plaza de Espana and the park area around it. The size and price of the drinks at the Flamenco venue La Carboneria (and the Flamenco was interesting too of course!) Discovering tapas [View Full Entry]

Copenhagen - Hans Christian Anderson, Danish pastries, The Little Mermaid, shiney new metro system, hundreds of attractive people riding bikes, brightly painted buildings, people who actually obey the 'little green man', Carlsberg, hot dogs on every corner and THOSE chairs. Our weekend in Copenhagen was blessed with bright sunshine and blue skies - the cold temperature was a lot more bearable in the Northern light. Like every other person travelling to Copenhagen, we followed the well trodden path to all the main sites. The Little Mermaid, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, the deserted Tivoli Gar [View Full Entry]

We've been a bit quiet recently with no overseas travels since Croatia. In between watching the world cup rugby, we've still been finding lots of new places to visit. I loved the stunning Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire and we finally got down the road to Windsor Castle too. Autumn has hit, the leaves are falling but the sun has been shining quite a bit. The deer are everywhere in Richmond Park. Chris took the photo of the big male. He didn't get too close, instead using the zoom lens to get the shot. We had another weekend down in Cornwall to [View Full Entry]

What a mixed bag. Enough to satisfy everyones little interests this weekend as we met up with some old nz friends in Cambridgeshire. Here's a run down on our Bank Holiday Weekend. The Norfolk Broads: after doing a short boardwalk circuit through the marshes, we were couldn't possibly bypass a place with such a stupid name. Hold onto your hats folks - THE HORSEY WINDPUMP was our next stop and then a walk out to THE HORSEY GAP. In plain English, this means we visited an old windmill near a river and then walked across fields before arriving at a gap [View Full Entry]

Just a few quick photos of some little country excursions taken recently. Okay, I admit it. This is the worst summer weather we have ever experienced but we are determined not to let it put us off the UK! Some days it has been beautiful and we have been able to have some great walks. We have done lots of Thames walks, a short walk at Virginia Water Lakes and have also been out to The Cotswolds again. For the record... I'M IN LOVE WITH THE COTSWOLDS. There, it's out in the open now. Just wanted everyone to know.. We did [View Full Entry]

Country life

Just like home

In all honesty, I wasn't too keen on visiting Dubrovnik. Shame on me. How mistaken I was. The Old Town of Dubrovnik was an absolute eye opener and somewhere that we would both recommend visiting. We stayed in two different guest houses as we ended up staying another night longer than intended. Both were run by the most lovely people ever and the rooms were spotlessly clean. One even had air conditioning which was an absolute bonus as Croatia was feeling the effects of the heatwave that was causing deaths in some parts of Europe. The first elderly couple spoke minimal [View Full Entry]

Tales from Hvar Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Hvar
After feeling to relaxed and comfortable on Vis, we were sad to leave our little bit of paradise. With backpacks firmly in place, we set off on the early Tuesday ferry to Hvar. Lonely Planet describes Hvar as 'fast becoming the choice for the swanky international jetsetting crowd' Our first impressions of Hvar, was a little more wanky than swanky. But then again, it might have been the heat, the heavy backpacks, the sudden appearance of chain stores like 'Lush', the ridiculous bus timetable, the cost of the left luggage facility and the hoards of tourists in Hvar town that was [View Full Entry]

We arrived at Vis in rapidly rising temperatures and made our way to the Tourist office in a bid to get some accommodation booked. We were worried that we hadn’t pre-booked accommodation on the island but as it turned out, this was a good thing. The girl at the office made a call and within five minutes an elderly lady came to collect us to view her apartment. Sweating like cattle, we lugged our packs up the hill and walked up the final steps to be faced with the most beautiful view of Vis. The apartment was a great find. Only [View Full Entry]

Paradise found on Vis

It seems everyone has something to say about Croatia so we waved goodbye the British summer and spent a few weeks backpacking around the Dalmation coast. After leaving the busy port area of Split we caught a bus and headed along the coast. Passing along the way, the most beautiful inlets of inky blue water. Outside the (barely) air conditioned bus, the temperature was rising and the sky was deep blue. We passed stunning little towns such as Trogir and Primosten and we were soon both wishing we were touring the country in our own car - we would have loved [View Full Entry]
