Nice post
I like Shaoxing. I lived in Shanghai for a couple of years and I took the train down to Shaoxing a few times to just walk around the city center and enjoy the pleasant, smallish town atmosphere. The people there are friendly, and not at all aggressive or confrontational as they are in some other similar sized towns. The food is outstanding and the train station is a pleasant stroll from the city center... had I not had to stay in Shanghai to be near the office I would have lived and studied there. I am planning a trip back after having not been in China for 7 years, and Shaoxing is high on my list. Thanks for the interesting read and pictures!

We live in Hangzhou and I really miss frozen yogurt. We will check this place out as I hope it is still there. Businesses in China seem to open in a few days and then close quickly also.

Too true!
You're right - I didn't see any Chinese people eating the bugs, just a lot of excited westerners. Though having said that one of our Chinese members of staff brought in some fried Cicadas to the office last summer (unfortunately/luckily I was out that day!), but I think they're still more of a novelty dish as they're definitely not sold in any of the restaurants here.

I grew up in Asia and don't remember the food stands ever serving bugs and such...
but I do remember scooping red ants off our fense and eating them raw...quite sour! I think that serving scorpions and insects is something more recent just to see if foreigners are stupid enough to eat them...judging by your Chinese friend's reaction. Many of your pictures are of food that I would really enjoy eating! Keep up your focus on food as that is your brand, but throw in a paragraph sometimes for context...like why were you in Beijing.

Oh please, its an opinion piece, the picture's used for comedic effect... If I was one of the 'looting bankers' these people so despise, I would be laughing all the way to my publicly-backed and funded bonus. In days of yore people would organise to protect their common interests, nowadays they nab £1 frozen chicken wings and burn down jd sports. I can't think of a more damning indictment of our moronic generation.

Good post
I was also shocked at how the rioters seemed to be misplacing their outcry. I mean, trashing an old man's barber's shop or looting a jewelry store are not going to make a dent on the people they're really angry at.

food!!!!!!
Dear Chopsticks, I am thoroughly enjoying your blog and photos of your food adventures with the outings tagged on as extra! Have become a convert to green tea in recent months as find the black stuff too strong so the dish with green tea in the title sounded interesting. I shall be using the word scumpdiddlyumptious as often as possible from now on. Catherine
