Chopsticks

I have generally found that when you tell someone about your plans to move to China the following conversation will contain at least one concerned comment about the cuisine. “Real Chinese food isn’t the same as a Chinese takeaway y’know!” (Well, yes, I should hope not if my local in London is anything to go by.) So as a result of all this unfounded fear, I decided I would write a blog about all our foody adventures in Hangzhou, from the local street food to swanky restaurant meals, enjoy!

A Tesco entry seemed blogworthy when we first arrived, but I kept forgetting about it, and now it seems so normal. Anyway, I’ve had some requests so here you are: Tesco Chinese Style - complete with live bullfrogs, tea pic n mix, and the all important “buy a pack of yoghurt and get a pair of scissors free”. Actually, I couldn’t see one of these at the time, so I made do with “buy a pack of yoghurt and get a glass free.” Sometimes the freebie taped to the item you want to buy is so large it’s hard to tell which one you are buying and which one you are getting free. I kid you not, I have seen a fully sized fruit bowl taped to a carton of milk. Naturally we bought it.... read more

This is the same tea house I wrote about back in June last year. We stopped here on our way round the lake after a pretty exhausting time pushing through all the tourists flooding West Lake during Qingming. Turns out they also do snacks too – modelled here by the beautiful Miss Gardiner.... read more

Found this on SanTanYinYue the island in the middle of West Lake. It’s sticky sweet rice and tasted a little bit like a cold rice pudding – I was wooed by the cute wicker basket. 10rmb / £1... read more

Took us ages to decide on a cake to welcome Tom’s family to China (“No Charlotte we are not buying the bright purple one”). We finally settled on this monster from a bakery on TiYuChang road. The red decorations are cherry tomatoes!... read more

I kept seeing these green things by the counter in the YouEasy stores, and eventually my curiosity got the better of me. A quick google search says they’re made from squeezed wormwood and glutinous rice with a red bean paste filling. (Though there are other varieties). They have a fairly inoffensive mild flavour, but it’s a bit like eating chewy playdough so I’d hesitate to recommend them. According to our Chinese teacher they’re always sold around the Qingming holiday. Qingming is a spring festival here – some people translate it as “tomb sweeping day” However by the look of West Lake, which was completely rammed, it’s just another bank holiday where the 8.7million people living in Hangzhou all decide to squeeze their way onto the Su causeway. Mei banfa.... read more

We went to Shaoxing for a weekend back in December and found some great places to eat and heaps of little cafes on cang qiao heritage street. We didn’t get pics at the time (remembered the train tickets, but forgot the camera), but it turned out for the best, because the restaurants we tried here were so good it was a great excuse to come back. It’s about half an hour south on the train from Hangzhou, famous for rice wine and stinky tofu. (I left the latter off the orders!) It's also where the write Lu Xun lived so there's a bit of a tourist hub surrounding his old house. The first restaurant is Shan Zhai YuTou Wang (mountain village fishhead king?!) a Southern minority restaurant. They had pictures of the longji rice terraces on ... read more

Contrary to what you would expect for Chinese New Year, most of the restaurants and cafes in Beijing were shut, so there wasn’t a huge amount of choice for cheap eats. Luckily there were still a few larger places open so we took the opportunity to try some Peking Duck with pancakes, which along with Beijing noodles is now firmly on the favourites list. This restaurant was called Goubuli 狗不理 (on the sign it’s written the old fashioned way from right to left 理不狗 ) It’s a chain; this particular one was just south of Tiananmen square, 31dashilan street, and the staff were brilliant. There were four of us sharing two ducks and two plates of noodles and it worked out at about 75rmb / £7.50 a head with drinks.... read more

We were on our way to the summer palace in Haidian district when we saw this collection of street vendors. I thought this man was amazing, he was carting around what looked like a massive dense steaming sponge cake decorated with sultanas and dates. I was so wrong, after forking out 15 rmb for a slice (crazy but I was too hungry at the time to think rationally) I found it wasn’t even sweet - in fact there was so little sugar in it, it tasted almost savoury. It was just a warm gooey slice of red bean flavoured gunk. A pretty unsatisfactory breakfast!... read more

Night Market Beijing

I didn't expect to spend my evening digesting a fried scorpion - but there's nothing like a bit of peer pressure. The market was on Dong'anmen Dajie - a bit of a tourist trap, but great fun and the scorpions weren't actually that bad - though I personally think it's hard for anything to taste bad when it's deep fried and covered in salt. The only difficult part was munching through the body which was a little squishy. It must have had a good meal before it got speared by a kebab stick. Credit to Katy who braved it first - no credit at all to Beales who stopped after a tentative nibble on a leg. (I should probably add here that despite no photographic evidence, McMullan manned up and had one too) Anyway, novelty scorpions ... read more
