one day in Bangkok

We caught a morning flight from Vientiane Laos to Bangkok where we would eventually catch our flight back home. I booked Ryan the Muslim meal for the flight. What can I say...Bangkok airways gave me too many options andI thought it was funny. He was more embarrassed than anything because the flight attendants and woman and the ticket counter kept confirming that he had the special meal.Ryan read

Luang parang gets our vote as best city in SE Asia

To say you love Luang Prabang is like saying you love breathing or chocolate cake or a cool breeze on a hot summer day. It39s an easy place to love. But with less than 24 hours to spend here Ryan and I are a fury of emotions. We39re angry we have to leave and sad we don39t get to experience the best city in southeast Asia longer. At least the two of us agree it39s the best city we39

slow boat day 2 and we arrive in the most wonderful city in all the land

Another day on the slow boat another day watching life along the Mekong River. There39s farming along the river and folks growing some sort of crop in the sand...not sure what it is though. The banks are dotted sporadically with animals. A few cows here a random goat standing on a rock people farming children bathing and of course the dangerous speedboat passing about every hour with petr

a slow boat kind of a day

New Years Day started early and very nicely. I looked out the window to see young monks lined up collecting food from the local people. It39s a common practice in Laos called tak bat. Some tourists take part in it in Luang Prabang but I hadn39t heard about it happening in Huay Xai so it was a treat watch the monks from afar chanting along the way. The best way to get from Huay Xai to Luang P

Still no gibbons

Today started the same as yesterday. No gibbon singing and no gibbon sightings. The rest of the group set out looking for gibbons but I stayed back. If I hadn39t heard them they wouldn39t be within a short walking distance. As a pro zipliner Ryan was the first one back and did a few extra zips so I could get some pictures of him. He brought back the sad news of still no gibbon sightings. We

the rat experience

Ryan set the alarm for 6 am because gibbons are most active in the morning and we wanted to see one. The Gibbon experience doesn39t guarantee seeing a gibbon but we were determined. Most of our group stood in silence around the railing of the tree house willing a gibbon to show its face. By 7am our guide showed up and he said he could take us hiking and zipping before breakfast to see if we cou

living like a gibbon

By 830 am we were at the gibbons office. We watched a short safety training video and then we were in the back of a pick up truck heading for the Gibbons Experience By this time Ryan39s new backpack was already tearing at the seams....so much for high wuality. Ryan and I were riding with a family 2 brothers each with their child. One guy reminded me of Ted Danson but blonder. He kept sayin

but it's my tuk tuk

We took another flight on Lao Airlines. This is the one I was worried about due to the fact that it39s often canceled because not many people book it. We landed on a semipaved runway with grass and weeds growing up through the cracks and were in the town of Huay Xai pronounced 39way sigh39. We were one of the three flights arriving at the Huay Xai airport this week. I had not booked ai

Our tour company gave us a gift of two ugly embroidered pillowcases. I didn39t want them and couldn39t think of anyone who would so when we checked out of the hotel this morning I left them in a gift bag with a note that it39s a present for housekeeping. I39m hoping she enjoys them more than me. Lovely gift just not my style. Ryan and I did want to buy gifts for ourselves today. I pur

It was another early morning to visit what the Vietnamese call 39the amazing cave39. Once we got there I understood why they called it that. It really was amazing...like something out of a movie. And massive the third and largest section of the cave was the size of a football field. And the other 2 sections weren39t small either. For me it was the highlight of the trip. Honestly the m

christmas on Halong Bay

We spent our first night on our small cruise ship on Halong Bay. Unfortunately our boat was next to a party boat with bright flashing purple lights so Ryan and I both woke up at 100 am to techno music so loud I was convinced it was coming from our boat. I had joked with Ryan that on Christmas Eve night we should wait up for Santa to visit us on the boat and we would get presents. When we actually

An early morning in Hanoi and a 4hour drive brought us to Halong Bay. Waiting to board the small boat that would take us to our cruise ship in the bay two Australian women came up to us and said 39You39re not Australian are you39We said no and she said 39Good. I39m tired of meeting only Australians in Vietnam. Where are you from39 We told her and she said 39Well I won39

Ryan still wasn39t feeling great by the morning. I went to breakfast alone and snuck him back a croissant. We spent the morning being lazy and watching the discovery channel. By 1pm our guide picked us up for an old town Hoi An tour. We started with a 9 course meal that Ryan couldn39t eat so I had to eat his share as well as mine. I felt cruel eating so much delicious food in front of him bu

A quick morning flight took us from Ho Chi Minh City to Danang. Danang is the home of China Beach which served as the landing site for the first American troops during the war. Our first stop was the Cham museum filled with limestone statues. I was a little bored in the museum but Ryan made it more fun by imitating some of the statues while our guide wasn39t looking. From there we walked up mar

Like a champ with 3.5 hours of sleep Ryan was ready to explore Ho Chi Minh City at 8am. We started our morning at the Cu Chi tunnels the tunnels used by the North Vietnamese Guerrillas for spying and fighting during the Vietnam war. They were much more elaborate than I could have ever imagined some going 10 meters deep. I had the chance to go into one of the tunnels and crawl 20 meters acros

I left Phuket this morning had a quick stop in Kuala Lumpur and was in Ho Chi Minh City by 4pm. I thought Thailand had a lot of motorbikes they have almost none compared to Vietnam. My driver from the airport told me the city had 6 million motorbikes on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. I think I saw all 6 million tonight. Trying to cross the street is a major undertaking. I found out just how i

Spent my last day in Thailand visiting the Phi Phi islands made famous by the movie 39The Beach39. If you haven39t seen the movie you should. It39s about the most idyllic beachdestination on Earth...until things go wrong. While nothing went wrong while I was there the fact that the islands are overrun with tourists make it a bit less idyllic but there39s no denying the islands

Knowing I was traveling through Southern Thailand during the same time period as the 2004 tsunami was a bit erie. Especially because there are tsunami warning signs everywhere warning in case of an earthquake to seek higher ground. A hard hit area Phuket has been rebuilt and construction was still underway this week with many luxury condos in the works. Much harder to get used to than the tsunam

Arrived in the well known vacation destination of Phuket today. Alba and I did some exploring and found a little stand where we could put our feet into big fish tanks and Garra Rufa fish a type of small tropical fish would eat the dead skins cells from our feet. My feet our beyond ticklish so I laughed for a solid 2 minutes while the Thai folks who worked there looked at me like I39m crazy. I

Apparently part of the James Bond movie 39Man With the Golden Gun39 was filmed on one of the tiny islands off the coast of Krabi so we set out today to visit that island and then continue with the boat ride that took us to another national marine park for camping. Other than the park rangers we were the only ones on the entire island. We slept in tents and despite only having a paper thin s
