Similarity Those houses resemble the ones I saw on Nias, Samosir Island Lake Toba, and Sumba Island. It seems surprising to me that there would be such similarity over such a wide area.
Dead Buffaloe Nice pictures. See the buffaloe being sacrificed reminded me that the animals actually die when we eat them. You don't see the killing when you buy the meat in a grocery store! It's a good lesson for city folk. Thanks for posting your great photographs and stories!
I enjoy reading your post. I looked like you had a great fun experience. Try to come to Java and check this place called Karimunjawa (you can googled it, you will find thousand information on the island). In Karimunjawa you will find less tourist there. Very beautiful place to go diving.
last of honeymoon Awesome. You make it sound so normal to be on the other side of the world and giving advice as to where to dine and shop. Most of my travels will be in books I'm afraid. Still trying to go to the Smoky Mts. this summer. You two are the bravest ones. Congratulations!
togean islands Seems to be all extremes: wonderful food or rats; happy children or dogs in heat; meals late but laid back culture; isolated and loooong travels to them. All and all just a wonderful honeymoon/adventure/ vacation. Congratulations you did it!!! Can't wait to see you both.
glad you guys are ok Hey,
I'm just reading through random indonesia blogs, looking for some info for an upcoming trip and have just read your entry. Just felt compelled to write and say I'm glad you are ok Adam and Charlotte, I can only imagine how scary those few hours would have been. So yep, this is probably a bit random but keep up the blogs!
Oh and indeed a super cool honeymoon :)

farm life/funeral Suppose all the people took the killing in stride. I have watched chickens being killed on a farm as a child, but was sent to the house when they killed hogs. To me it was a good thing the meat wasn't wasted and hopefully the buffalos had a good life. The smells might have bothered me... Wonderful trip for you and happy for you.
marooned No one gave up-the divers on the island nor the crew in the boat but each kept putting the pieces together. I would have been sick with worry on either side. It was real life just seemed like a movie b/c this was not in the plans. So what did you learn?
No need for a hijab or anything like that. Not in the places we have been so far, and I don't think that's going to change. Everyone is quite tolerant and accepting. Such gracious people here.
gili Love this place: tropical, rural and quiet altogether plus a cat! Where is the food? Guess you can't recognize any constellations there? Thinking there would be different circumpolar ones there?
island stop Think you have found a drink similar to mint julep; watch the beer. Congratulations on finishing your book! Title? Marvelous views there- especially for breakfast.
Singapore is boring I was in Singapore last month for two weeks, and I really felt it to be boring, a bit too organized you dont seem to encounter raw feel of life.
Hi Seems we've been around the same places this summer. Sad the dive shop was not that great. On our side, at Kapalai, I can easily say it was one of the best I ever saw...and i saw few of them. Where is your next diving? Let us know if you ever make it to Thailand! Peter
You are very brave to even think that sharks in sight became almost too common!! AS Charles once said, "When you are in the ocean, you are just fish bait."
about India Now the trip to India seems real and surrealistic at the same time. The one of the lady patting your check made me cry... too sweet. xo mama
So you can now cook inside bamboo. How much fun! There is some bamboo growing just up Northshore where you can use your new skills w/the machete. Little did we know there were any similarities between here and there! XOOOOO Mom
Hey, welcome to Singapore! It's always interesting to hear a foreigner's perspective of our country. Alot of locals hate Singapore to the core. They label it boring.
rags to riches Love all the adventures. Wish I could be there too, well, maybe not! The corner "home" reminded me when you used to make your own space wherever you needed to be w/me. XOs
Looks awesome Adam- Trying to plan a trip in a few weeks, considering Malaysia, Thailand, etc.. Thanks for such a detailed blog, it's very heplful.

Yes, we have moved on from hanging with the turtles. I'll be posting another blog soon about this, but we just went to Kota Bharu and did what you suggested. And now we're in the Cameron Highlands where there is a much sought after Scrabble board at this guest house. Adam taught a group of us to play "Grabble" last night. So much fun.
Yes, those are the streets! Thanks for the info. And you are right about how you can eat and eat here and not gain any weight. I'm not going to push this theory too much though. : )
