After catching a short flight across to Auckland I was welcomed with an hour and a half que in immigration. After a long wait and a 45 minute shuttle I checked into my hostel at around 2.30am and caught up on some sleep. The next day was a mainly unproductive one as a lurked around waiting for the evening bus down to Taupo. The only notable event being Arsenals comeback in the first leg against Barca. That evening I caught the bus down the north island to Taupo and met up with Chris after two long weeks apart at around 1am as he greeted me in his jolly and intoxicated state with Joe. We had a fairly quiet one that night and went to bed around 3am as we witnessed Joe get majorly cock blocked in ... read more

First day back in Melbourne we headed straight back to the MCG for the first one day match. Unfortunately Shane Watson did not read the script and produced a stunning 161 not out to beat England. Considerably less English fans and the Aussies managed to find a voice when they were on top. The following day we spent watching the first day of the Australian Open. We watched Mardy Fish come back down from two sets down to beat Victor Hanescui in an epic encounter. We were following Mardy from the start and had to beat off the constant chants for Victor with even more enthusiasm for Mardy. We like to think we played a part in helping him through the first round. We then went to watch a bit of Gasquet before watching the British ... read more

We arrived in Melbourne full of Christmas spirit as we greeted Hannah in our santa hats at 7am. We got dropped of off at babs house and settled in. We quickly popped down to the Catto-Smiths where knowone was home and promptly set off the alarm upon entering. All of our efforts were unable to turn off the alarm and we quickly panicked. We left the house with the alarm ringing at a deafening decibel down the street. It looked like two random men had just casually robbed the house before calmly walking away. The slightly worrying thing was that none of the neighbours seemed to care. We later headed breifly into the city to show Chris around before heading back for Christmas eve. We both woke up late on Christmas day feeling slightly wierd with ... read more

After a fairly brutal eleven hours traveling we arrived in the middle of know where to be told we needed to catch a taxi which would take twenty five minutes to our accommodation. Obviously a bit presumptuous to expect to end up anywhere near we wanted to be. After a another short journey we arrived at Bens house to be met by a clean and smart looking hostel/hotel. The staff were very friendly and we checked into our room to be greeted with a nice surprise as we found three comfy beds in a very spacious room with a nice bathroom. Unfortunately there was one draw back and it came in the form of stinking damp.  Chris popped upstairs and had a word with front of house and we had quickly moved into even more luxurious ... read more

It was time to leave Bangkok and start our long journey to Koh Tao. It started in a very eventful manner with a shockingly drunk Italian man who must have been in his fifties stagger and sway his way up the stairs up to his seat. There was then five minutes of loud groaning from the back of the bus before he was up again and nearly breaking his neck on the way off the bus just as it was leaving. He was quickly forced back on to the disappointment of the rest of the bus. He was so drunk that he was way past constructing a sentence and could only instead muster loud churning and grunting noises that impeded everyone's enjoyability of the film that was being shown. Around thirty minutes went by before I ... read more

So it was time to set off and leave the mayhem of Bangkok behind us and head to the north for some trekking and the annual festival held in Chang Mai. To do this we had chosen to travel by train and purchase 2nd class sleeper tickets which had been advised to us by all. We arrived at the station in plenty of time and started the long long wait for our train. The train was meant to leave at 7.30pm but did not end up leaving the station until 9pm. We were meant to get into Chang Mai at 9am the following morning but there was an accident further up the line which ground all to a halt for a few hours. This eventually meant we got to Chang Mai at just gone 3pm the ... read more

After what seemed an eternity November 14th 2010 had finally come around and it was time for myself and Chris to set off on our 4 and a half month round the world adventure that had been long in hype and planning. We headed off to Heathrow to catch our 21.45pm flight and dealt with the usual emotional goodbyes, more so from Chris's side as I think my family are used to saying there goodbyes to me by now. We got through customs and onto the plane without any real problems and settled into our cramped seating for our 10 and a half hour flight. By this time I think the excitement had really hit us and we began to get the giggles, something which has become a common theme on this trip. As Chris attempted ... read more

The Golden Grapes Luckily for me my time in Saudi happened to coincide with the 4th annual Golden Grape awards held on the compound. This consisted of a number of different people from inside and outside of the compound. I arrived at 7pm with my with the scene nicely set around the pool with catering provided and the designated drinking tables set out with the competition entries. The categories for entry were Beer, White Wine, Red Wine, Ports and Others. Participants that were entering their own brew were allowed to enter one entry per category. Myself and my dad entered into the beer, white & red wine. Once everyone was ready we set off sampling as many of the different categories as you dared to sample. I decided to opt for the beers first. The only ... read more

Initial Impressions When agreeing to my 7 week adventure to The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as it is known out here, I had a very few preconceptions upon what I was about to embark on. I naively thought that It would be a less glamorous version of Egypt/UAE, how wrong I was, it certainly has been a culture shock of massive proportions. Arriving at the airport at 6.30am after managing to get some sleep on the plane thanks to my trusty new travel pillow (God send). I proceeded to get off the plane to be hit by the usual wall of hot air when you arrive abroad. I was quite taken back by the heat this early in the morning though, but as I was soon to learn that in the KSA it never gets cold. ... read more
