Chani - Chani Mortimer

After years of procrastination, it's finally happened - I'm running away from home and heading to Europe! I'm officially unemployed, of no fixed address... and hoping to God that I don't get sidetracked in an English pub and forget to go and do all the things I want to do. Which is hopelessly unstructured. I have a very general strategy of going where I want and seeing whatever strikes my fancy ("You know, walk the earth, meet people... get into adventures. Like Caine from Kung Fu." ) just gonna to wing it! So feel free to have a look and see what I've been doing... and just to give you a heads up, I like getting on a soapbox! But always keen for an argument, feel free to leave me a post telling me how wrong you think I am.

Oh my hippy friends, you would go absolutely nuts in this town... there are jewels and magic carpets and water pipes as far as the eye can see! Quick note - a lot of people, my 3 days ago self included, have fairly serious reservations about İstanbul as a safe travel destination for a (relatively) young, blonde, short, probably unable to defend herself kind of independent traveller. But İ have to say, so far, these are completely unfounded. At this point in time, Istanbul is completely swarming with tourists from every walk of life imaginable - young, old, western, asian, in [View Full Entry]

Oh so pretty!

OK, I have a confession to make. I took candy from a stranger. An old, European, male stranger. I figured it was safe because he was eating it too, but, in hindsight, I should probably be more careful. He may have laced it with some deadly poisonous yet completely undetectable poison that he has spent years building up an immunity to, like Wesley's cunning plot to overthrow Vizzini. This guy doesn't look devious, but he might be Sicilian, and I should know better than to engage in a battle of wits with a Sicilian when death is on the line. Anyone [View Full Entry]

I tried really very hard. I thought maybe I was just struggling with being back to staying at smelly backpackers and having to lug my crap around with me everywhere and feeling like a bit of a sitting duck being on my own... But, in hindsight, I just didn't love Budapest. Parts of the city are really beautiful and the people are very friendly and helpful. I absolutely loved the castle and some of the architecture is completely amazing. There are some stunning park areas and the museums are fantastic... most importantly, I had some really good food, the weather was [View Full Entry]

Well hello to my few yet faithful readers… or should I say Heyup, all reet? Get t’ pub, y’ divvy. Eeh by gum, gi’ over, y’ jammy bastard. Wha’s up wit ye? Nout. Got a right bollocking didn i? Oh aye. Pack it in, steady, calm down. That actually doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, even if you can speak Yorkshire… which I really can’t, try as I might. The only even vaguely Yorkshirian thing I ever say is “yer what?!” Other than that, I suspect Otliensians are picking up more Aussie than we are Yorkshire… I notice quite a [View Full Entry]

Ahem. Chani Mortimer. Policy and Performance Officer. Department of Learning and Leisure. Leeds City Council (Leeds, England, United Kingdom, world, the Universe etc). Pretty cool hey!! Thanks heaps to Jean and Kevin for my glowing references… Not sure what you lied about, but much appreciated!! I know they asked Jean how many sick days I’d had in the last 12 months… I only hope to God she didn’t tell them the truth. And now me and Paul have moved into Foster's house... my room is affectionately known as "the cupboard", will be much cooler once we set up a pool table [View Full Entry]

As promised, am trying to do more weekends away... although there is a small part of me that feels I shoul probably spend my money on some basic winter provisions (need a new coat, some new boots and socks without holes in them) and work clothes (my existing wardrobe is a little sad, to say the least), the louder part of my brain thinks I should spend my money on catching up with people and seeing other parts of the UK (in the first instance, the mainland when I get more mula). So Rolando, a good mate from home, has been [View Full Entry]

This is the ride I cried on...
What a drag it is getting old...Not really! The first birthday in ages that I haven't freaked out and cried about getting old... That's not to say that I didn't freak out and cry about something else... but.... OK, I'll start at the beginning. 8 of us went down to Alton Towers, this AWESOME theme park in Staffordshire, a couple of hours south of where we live. We got there after lunchtime Monday, and spent the afternoon in the water park... quite possibly the tackiest place I have ever been, I loved it! You should have seen the way they have [View Full Entry]

This one made us all feel a bit sick...

I started writing this at the end of August... clearly my concentration span has not improved. OK, not sure if attitude from 4 people quite constitutes popular demand... but for the 4 people that actually read this, I'll give you an update of what I've been up to. As predicted, I spend a ludicrous amount of time in English pubs. Seriously. LUDICROUS. I put this down to 4 key factors: 1. My brother works in a bar; 2. I'm good friends with the owner of this bar and don't pay very much for drinks; 3. I don't have any sober friends; [View Full Entry]

Its been a harrowing few months... but now that Kevin has been returned to me unharmed, I can share my grief. In the late hours on Easter Sunday, Kevin the slightly dazed looking crocodile was kidnapped by a little-known international terrorist organisation which hopes to rid the world of drunken Australian travellers. Must say, I'm somewhat sympathetic to their plight, if not their methods. So my return to Otley, which I was already hell excited about, was made all the more special by Kevin's safe return. He now has some company, although, out of all the ninja turtles, Raph definitely [View Full Entry]

I can't stress to you how seriously hilly this town is. I mean, one day I even went without dinner because I couldn't be bothered walking up the hill to eat... its that hilly. But unbelievably pretty! I almost didn't want to like Edinburgh as much as Glasgow, just because everyone loves Edinburgh and bags Glasgow, I just wanted to go for the underdog. That said, Edinburgh has a lot more going for tourists... the castle and historic buildings are fairly awesome (that said, haven't actually been inside the castle yet, its £11! But it does kind of loom over [View Full Entry]
