Cruising along the Mekong Delta and village homestay

Day 12 Today we left the dazzling lights and bars of Saigon and headed for the more sedate and tranquil Mekong Delta known as the rice bowl of Vietnam. To reach our homestay in Cai Be we hopped on board our river boat and stopped along the way to see some small cottage industries including the making of rice paper and coconut candy and of course got to sample some of the local produce. The wom

Relaxing at the Rex Saigon

Day 10 Today we caught the flight from Danang to Ho Chi Minh City. It was an afternoon flight so unfortunately we didn39t arrive until later afternoon. Just time for a quick dip in the small rooftop pool before dinner and then a tour of some of the rooftop bars of Saigon. Our hotel was in an excellent location right in the heart of District One so in striking distance of Sheraton Caravelle a

Muddy cycling in Hoi An

Day 7 Today we had a long drive to Hoi An going over the beautiful and scenic Hai Van Pass. On the way we stopped to see the China Beach the Cham museum and Marble Mountain. Here some of the caves were used by the Viet Cong during as a hospital during the Vietnam War. I was also surprised to see a giant marble Budda inside and one on the hillside which looked so white apparently it had been pain

Happy in Hue

Days 57Luckily the sleeper trains in Vietnam are much nicer than the ones in India. I was impressed by the fact that the beds were wide enough to lay on your side and even a door that locks There were two bunks and two sinks at the end of the corridor. Our train left Hanoi at 7pm and arrived in Hue around 8am with several stops along the way. It was nice to arrive to 35 degrees and sunshine. Exc

Good Morning Vietnam

Days 14. Having an amazing time here in Vietnam after an eventful flight from Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur. We were just about to take off and the plane was ordered back to base and surrounded by police. They then came on and took off a woman and child who were trying to leave the country illegally Luckily the two hour delay did not stop me from missing my connection to Hanoi. On day two we had a tou

Carry on Cruising

Well thankfully the Egyptian sleeper train was a lot nicer than my experience of the Indian sleeper train. We actually had our own compartment with a door and a sink Luckily Richard decided to keep to himself the fact that he had removed a cockroache from my bed just before we were going to sleep. A rather restless sleep due to the noise of the train so I arrived in Luxor very tired for wh

Giza plateau

Our first full day in Egypt was a real highlight of the trip as we visited the pyramids at the Giza plateau. Although our scheduled visit on the tour was not until the end of the holiday we had a welcome change to see them at the start due to some protesting in Tahir square. There are three main pyramids Cheops Chephren and Mycerinus and the sight of them did not disappoint. Breathtaking in

Two days to Egypt

Well here I go again In two days time I will be heading off to Egypt for a 10 day trip of the main archeological sites. This time I am not alone as my boyfriend Richard is coming with me along with two people from my India trip Chris and Alan and I am guessing a few others on the tour I am sooooo excited. I was a little nervous at the beginning of the year that it might be cancelled but thi

Delhi my new home

So the Volcanic Ash cloud meant that in the end we all had an extra week in Delhi. In hindsight it is funny as I was worried that I would only have half a day in Delhi which I didn't think was long enough. I was pleased to be on an organised tour as it was great to have others to talk to who were in the same situation and we all worked hard to keep our spirits up and to plan our days to relieve

Homeward bound

Luckily we started as the first stop for our train journey from Varanasi to Delhi which meant a much cleaner train and time to find our bunks in the light without stepping over people luggage food etc It was a lot nicer than the other train and I ended up in a four bunk compartment with the three other girls travelling on their own. However before I get too carried away my good mood was sudde

Sunrise at the Ganges

Wow 4.50am start This time we took a bus back to the river Ganges to take a morning boat ride and to see the Ghats from the water. I was amazed by the procession of people on their way to the Holy waters and how many were there bathing in it and swimming. Some people were even using soap. I am not sure I would like to take a bath in such a public place but priests were available to give ble

After the experience of the overnight sleeper train it was a relief to arrive at a nice hotel in Varanasi. We were able to check in straight away and after enjoying breakfast at 7.30am spent the day relaxing by the pool and taking a massage. A welcome break from all the travel on this hectic trip and a chance to unwind. At 5.30pm we took our first tuc tuc ride Well noone seems to follow any

Indian Sleeper Trains

OMG. Indian sleeper trains what an experience. One unfortunately I will have to repeat one more on this trip I did not enjoy the experience at all. First of all the train was late and we were waiting for nearly 2 hours on the platform. As the train only stops for 5 minutes we had a mad panic to try and get our luggage on the train and all of us in the time allocated without leaving anyone

The maginificent Taj Mahal

Before heading to Agra we were able to stop on the way to visit a village secondary school. The children start here at the age of 13 and parents must pay about 150 rupees a year to cover uniform lunch and book costs. While we were there the children were all sitting an English exam. They had been split up into different years and placed in rows. They were all sat on the concrete floor and no

Up bright and early at 4.50 am with just enough time for a quick cuppa before our early morning game drive. Full of sleep and anticipation we set off once again in search of the elusive tiger. A different guide and a new truck so fingers crossed We took a different route at the Ranthambhore National Park and I had the sense that the tigers were out there and were watching us. Again we spotte

Left Jaipur for the long drive to Ranthambhore in search of the elusive tiger. Along the way we stopped at a pottery workshop where I was able to have a go. It was very hard work and I managed to make a very small bowl with lots of support. I was then left covered in clay until they brought me a milking bucket full of water so I could wash my hands The second stop was a real highlight of the

Jaipur feeling hot hot hot

Arrived safely in Delhi after my 8 and a half hour flight and met up with everyone from my Exodus group. There are 12 people traveling together and four girls on our own. We had a very long drive to Jaipur and during our lunch stop I was brave and tried some Indian Massala tea. It was incredibly sweet and tasted a bit like chicken tika massala served in a glass with hot milk and skim on the top

Well hello It seems a long time since I have been able to write my blog and tell you all about an exciting trip I am on or am having. Finally tomorrow I am off to India on a Northern highlights tour. After a week in Benidorm and Cornwall last year I am super excited about a trip further afield. This time I am going on my own but as it is an organised trip will meet other people when I am ther

One week to go

Well the time has flown by since my last blog. I have been settling in to life in Corsica and trying to get used to the long lunchbreaks and long days. I have also developed far too much of a liking for the delicious French pastries that are on offer but at least my 30 minute walk to school helps to burn off the calories. The weather has been very mixed but we have enjoyed some sunshine as wel

Hello all. Well I am on my travels again but this time with a bit of a difference. I have come to Corisca for four weeks as part of a European exchange programme between Universities and traineequalified teachers. I will be observing and teaching in a school in Bastia over the next four weeks as well as participating in a programme of cultural awareness organised by the UFM in Corsica. There
