Geri has been left behind in freezing Ballarat...

Geri and I are going backpacking all over Mexico. We Leave Ballarat, Australia on 16th of March
2006 and arrive in Mexico on the same day, 4 hours later. We plan to stay approximatly 7 weeks (Although Geri might decide we should stay an extra 3 months )and leave to go home on the 2nd May 2006. It's my first time visiting Mexico and Geri has been there before. We plan to study some spanish while we're there, god help us. You'll hear from us again a couple of days after we arrive. Adios.

Oasis in the red dirt
Chris Skase alias Carol Brown reporting in with our adventures in the Wild West. A friend emailed me with the new name and said the authorities couldn’t catch him so maybe I should give it a try. Yes I’m still waiting on my police clearance and it is now beyond a joke. Surely real criminals wouldn’t have this much of a problem. John was working down at Marble Bar (2 hours away) the other week so I went for a ride and did the tourist visit. Very pretty place when you drive for hours in red dirt and just come across [View Full Entry]

The dogs are settling in very well in their new red dirt surrounds. Coby’s cream coat now has a hue of red to it. After the break in the dogs add a bit of security to the house. I have had a job offer to work in the Post Office but before starting I have to have a medical and a Police clearance. The medical is organized for tomorrow and I visited the Police station last week. Easy process I was told just pay $43 and fill out the 1 page form. Yeah right!! The service officer left me to fill [View Full Entry]

Well my first reaction while flying over the Port Hedland airport was where we are going to land exactly. I’m a true believer things happen for a reason and this is very true that I needed to go on holidays to Mexico with Geri before contemplating this adventure to the Wild West. Strangely it reminds me of certain parts of Mexico but the only difference is I’m not struggling with the language. We stopped at the local motel which was really nice with all meals supplied. As you will be aware by now the house was another matter. Nice thoughts, nice [View Full Entry]

I'm always up for a challenge, two right feet, should be good for running from the sharks down Port Hedland's main drag!
Carol's last week in Ballarat before she set off for the Big Red Dirt is a long long story, she twas slightly disorientated as evidenced by the photo! [View Full Entry]

Just a short note to say we are both wrecked from the sun, sand, snorkelling, pyramids, pool, dolphins, fish, coral, sangria, cenotes, underground pools of crystal clear water, cervesas, pina coladas and spanish. Too tired to write more as we´ve got to get back to the pool, pizza and beer. hasta la vista [View Full Entry]

As the saying goes ¨when in Rome do as the Romans do¨. Well we are in Mexico and are definitely doing as they do. We eat Mexican food, have a siesta in the afternoon, say mañana a lot (we will do it tomorrow) and have now been to a Mexican hairdresser. All I can say about the last experience is they do it differently here. We don´t quite look the same as when we left Australia. Maybe something was lost in the translation or I said the wrong Spanish word. Oh well folks it will grow on you as it has [View Full Entry]

It's hard work drinking pina colada's but Carol reckons she's up to it..... the book is the Da Vinci Code
We had our first mexican cooking lesson yesterday after going to the market with our Spanish shopping list. Waiting to see what they produced was very entertaining. It was interesting learning to cook with the teacher speaking Spanish, it was all put into context when the action was put with the word. Eating our creation was the best part of the lesson. Muy bien. After cooking we headed off to our respective classes. The class went for 3 hours straight with No break. In my class there was only another woman and her name was also Carol. She was the [View Full Entry]

Sorry that we havent had an entry on the blog site for a while. Mexico City was great not what I expected at all. I imagined the population of Australia put into one city and that was a scary thought. It is just like Melbourne (but older) but it goes on forever and forever. Saw all the sites and toured around on a double decker bus with a bunch of school kids. I thought the highlight was a French guy (guapo- very handsome) chatting me up but no it was out done by our departure at the bus terminal. It is [View Full Entry]

these boots were made for walking .....
It feels like we´ve been in the wild wild west since we arrived in Creel. The landscape is dry and dusty broken by pine forests, cool air and strange rock formations. Many of the Tarahumara Indians still reside in the surrounding caves. They have a restaurant here called the Hospital for hanovers! Checked it out and exited very quickly upon viewing hungry workers hoeing into a special breakfast soup at the bar - all men, a bit early for breakfast. At Chihuahua we were fitted out cowboy hats, checked out the boot situation (loved them!) and saw the Dodge that Pancho [View Full Entry]

Geri and myself have been totally confused now for the last couple of days. First of all we were travelling from Chihuahua down south to Zacatecas which was to take 10 to 12 hours by bus. Pretty good ride we thought because we managed to get some sleep and there was plenty of seats to relax. The bus driver was well aware that I didnt speak a great deal of Spanish when we stopped at some point I tried to ask where the bathroom (bano) was located, Geri was asleep so I thought I would be brave and just ask.
