Where to Begin! Agnes Water/1770 It's been a long time since my last entry, sorry guys. A catch up is indeed required!! Right here goes! On the 10th July we caught the greyhound bus to the town of 1770/Agnes Water. The weather was great whilst we were there. we stayed for 2 nights at a hostel named 'Cool Bananas' and it was indeed really cool!I'd recommebnd it to anyone travelling there. The staff were great the dorms nice and spacious and clean and they do food for $5 every night and it was great food. The hostel is a 5 minute walk from the beach which was really beautiful and there were rocks at one end of the beach which looked great to fish from so I did!! The fishing was great. I caught so ... read more
Where to Begin!!! Well it has been a very long time since my last entry so I shall try to put things into some sort of logical order by doing this entry in sections!!! Ipswich Well what a saga Ipswich was!! Ipswich is a suburb of Brisbane and is where I went to do my solo skydiving training (AFF Training) with Brisbane Skydiving Centre, which is owned and operated by Brian Scoffell along with all his staff, 'Spready', 'Kiwi', 'Belg', Clayton and Anna to name but a few! The course was intended to be 9 stages with a solo jump on each stage with instructors jumping with you just in case you encounter difficulties. I got to the drop zone and was so hyped about doing my training. The first day was dedicated to ground ... read more
Brisbane So we arrived in Brisbane a few nights ago now on the 17th june. Once again we all travelled together (Sarah, Vanessa, Myrthe and Katie & I). Brisbane is ok. It's a very large city with a tidal river running through it dividing the city in half. But it's still just a city like any other. We all booked into Brisbane City Backpackers as it said the internet was free!! I wish we hadn't it makes Byron Bay Backpackers Inn seem tranquil!!! This hostel is a real party hostel!! Our room is adjacent to the 'in hostel' pub!!! The music rarely stops before 1:30am! On the first night we joined in the party atmosphere and went to the hostel pub, which happens to be irish (as all pubs seem to be in Oceania!). We ... read more
Surfers Paradise Well we all travelled on the greyhound bus together (Katie & I, Sarah, Vanessa and Myrthe) and arrived at Trekkers backpacker hostel in the afternoon on the 15th June. The weather was stunningly hot and sunny yet my first impression of Surfers was that it was ugly. High rise buildings absolutely everywhere you look. The beach was lovely but spoilt by the high rises. We all booked into a dorm and agreed to stay only 2 nights as we all thought it looked crap, and we were right! That first day we just walked back into town, which turned out to be a mistake as it was over 3 km! The hostel had picked us up from the bus station so we hadn't really payed attention to how far it was from town!! ... read more
Byron Bay- So Chilled Out! Wow Byron Bay what a place!! Im writing this in retrospect as I have got a bit behind with the blog!! We spent a week in Byron Bay and to be honest it was one of the most chilled out weeks of my life so there is not much to write about!!!! For the first couple of days it rained hard and non-stop!!! We just hung around the hostel or local pubs and shops for those two days!! We stayed at the Backpackers Inn. It was awesome for the private beach access but very very noisy, a real party hostel full of young gap year students whos' sole aim for their travelling experience was to get as smashed as possible every night! It wasn't too bad though Katie and I ... read more
Sunshine at last! We got to Port Mac on 5/06/08 and I went fishing and Katie sat and read as shes not a reel fan of fishing, get it? 'Reel', like that did ya? That's one of mine! SO anyway I didn't catch anything that day. The next day the sun was shining bright and it was about 21 degrees celcius so we took a leisurely stroll to the Koala hospital via a boardwalk which goes through the local wildlife reserve. We saw hundreds of different birds; Herons, cockatoos, storks and parrots. The best thing was the trees were full sleeping fruit bats who had been up the night before looking for food. The Koala hospital was nice. Sad to see all the poorly Koalas though. The majority of them were in with chlamydia related ... read more
We Made It! We made it down under! We flew into Sydney on the afternoon of the 30/05/08 and it was beautiful sunshine and 21 degree heat. Shame that hasn't lasted! Let's see that afternoon we just checked into the Glebe YHA hostel and got the bus back into town and wandered around circular quay for a few hours doing the usual touristy stuff, like photos of the bridge and the opera house. After that we went through the quayside parks trying to follow these miraculously colourful little parrots! They were so fast it was difficult to follow them, let alone get a picture but we managed it, and I think they are my new favourite bird! They are called scaly breasted Lorikeets and are such vivid colours! We also saw Ibis storks. Everyone in ... read more
Christchurch Well its been a while since my last entry so I shall set to filling you all in on what we've done. We actually spent a couple of nights in Nelson and walked to the centre of New Zealand. Then we spent our last 3 days in NZ with some friends in Christchurch. I hadn't seen Stacy for a very long time, over a decade in fact!! Stacy and her husband J very kindly let us stay with them in their home. We didn't actually get up to much whilst we were there in the way of touristy things really. We just really chilled out and met Stacy and J's children and played with them and chatted with everyone. On our second day we did go to the gondola and got the greatest view ... read more
What a great place! Well allot has happened since the Fox Glacier blog, so I shall fill you all in. Hokitika As I mentioned on the last entry we stayed one night in Hokitika. It was a funny place, like a ghost town. We met only two other backpackers. The weather was gorgeous and the beach lovely. We spent the evening there just walking along the beach looking for Pounamu (greenstone) and found allot! Obviously it didn't look like the stuff in the shops as that is all polished and carved, but it was still a beautiful green colour nonetheless. The other funny thing is that we saw two young looking girls (17-18ish) looking all around for greenstone too. They were staring at it and going, "oh I can't find any". I think perhaps they ... read more
The Nimble Fox Well we arrived in the tiny village of Fox Glacier. It really is tiny, the population was like less than 1000! So the only thing we could do there was literally either walk the glacier or go to the pub, so we did both! We arrived there 2 nights ago and Katie being extremely well organised had booked our walk when we were in Queenstown, which is good cos the tour was full!! What a day though. We got up at a reasonable hour, around 0800 and were all checked in and boot and crampon fitted by 1000 and on our short bus ride to the walk to the glacier by 1030. It was so strange, when you jump outta the bus you can see the glacier and think "oh thats not ... read more
