The weather for the last week has been absolutely gorgeous, so I've been taking full advantage with lots of outdoor activities. Last Sunday I attended the annual CAMD/CINF summer BBQ. (CAMD is the research group I work in at DTU and CINF is a closely related experimental research group here.) The weather was really nice and the food was fantastic. They roasted an entire pig, the Spanish students made sangria and there was a cake contest. It was my first time to try sangria - I'm now definitely a fan. We socialized and ate and then played frisbee and volleyball. On Monday I rode my bike to Dyrehave which is a deer park about 4 miles away. It was really pretty and (surprise!) there were tons of deer. There was also (more surprisingly) an amusement park ... read more

I've been living in the DTU "containers" in Lyngby, about 20 min. from central Copenhagen, for almost 3 weeks now. They are storage units turned into international student housing -- not the nicest place but certainly livable. Its also right across the street from the building I am working in, so super convenient, although I have not been managing to get to work any earlier than I was when I had a 45 min. commute. Go figure. Its been really nice living here because it gave me the opportunity to meet international students outside of the department I'm working in. Most of the students I have met are exchange students who have been here since January and are staying until the end of June. In my container I live with two Polish guys, two Indian guys, ... read more

My trip to Malmo last Saturday was a bit of a disaster. Well, that may be an ovestatement, but it was certainly much less pleasant than I had hoped. I went to Malmo because I forgot most of my jeans at home and everyone said shopping there would be much cheaper than in Copenhagen. Part of the problem was that I got a late start. I went to the main train station in Copenhagen and took the train for about 25 USD over the Oresund bridge to Malmo at like 1:30, forgetting that stores would probably close by 5. I arrived in Malmo at 2 and rather than looking at the map I picked up at the visitors center, I just started walking - the wrong direction. I eventually figured out that I was not heading ... read more

The weather this weekend was fantastic - I think the highs were in the low to mid 70s. Friday I was going to meet Lars (an ex-UW grad student, now DTU post-doc) and some of his friends at Tivoli, which is this large park/garden/amusement park in downtown Copenhagen. They were going to see a Danish folk singer there. I made it downtown at like 9:30 or so, and the line to get in was outrageously long. I still don't have a cell phone either, so I figured there was no chance I would find them if I did make it in. So, I just wandered around downtown for a bit since I had not been around there at all yet. I stopped at a pub and sat on the patio for a beer and then went ... read more

As for the rest of my weekend in Amsterdam - Saturday evening we went out to eat at an Italian restaurant close to the Hostel. Then Matt and I went to Nieuwmarkt square, which was the same area I went to with the kid from Chicago the night before. In the center of the square is a building called De Waag which apparently used to be a gate in the medieval city walls then was converted to a weighing house in the 17th century and the square surrounding it was a market. Then in WWII the square was used as a collection point for Jews. Now, De Waag is a restaurant and the square consists of pubs and cafes with lots of patios. I think there is still a market there from time to time. So, ... read more

Currently on day two of my weekend trip to Amsterdam. I've been impresssed by the gazillion places men can urinate here! At night there are these large plastic circular contraptions split into four urinals that are put out at the corners of intersections. There's also permanent urinals all over the place. I saw a guy today peeing at Vondelpark - which is apparently a national monument. Besides noticing the surplus of urinals, we've done lots of eating out. I think the food here is much better than the food I have had in Denmark so far. So, I've been making up for missed calories. Yesterday when I arrived Matt met me at the airport and then we attempted to head for the hostel. He got us lost, I got whiney, and then we stopped for a ... read more

So, here's a bit on the first few days... On the way here my first flight was delayed and I got stuck in Chicago for an extra night. I ended up taking a flight the next day at 4:30 with a layover in Stockholm. With the time change, I left my house at 6:00 on a Friday and finally arrived in Copenhagen at about 11:00 am on a Sunday -- long trip! I made it to my place okay, my suitcase only fell over 50 times and I only was almost ran over and yelled at once. Apparently the red man means "don't walk." The place I am staying and the family I'm currently staying with are all very nice. I'm very close to the train station, but according to some of the other students in ... read more
