The border crossing from Laos to Cambodia is not too oft travelled. Internet forums are rife with traveller’s experiences of getting over charged at entry. To be honest we just found the border crossing laughable. Firstly, Laos. We had to pay a $2 exit fee (insignificant in the scheme of things but given that there are no official signs and we certainly hadn’t read about it anywhere in the guide books, it is easy to assume that the border controllers are making a nice earn out of this one). Keep in mind through all this that all fees to be paid have to be in US dollars even though both Laos and Cambodia have their own currencies. Secondly, Cambodia. And this is where you just have to laugh. You walk from the Laos control booth firstly ... read more

If Thailand is known as the land of smiles, then what do they call Laos...the land of more smiles than Thailand? Laos possibly by chance, has the happiest greeting in the world in “Sabaai-dii-” (hello), said by women and children as “sabaai-diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii”. They also have the happiest form of thank you in the world with “Khawp jai lai lai”. This too is said with cheer and extension “Khawp jai lai laiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii”. It really adds to your experience when the locals offer these small parts of their culture to you with great big smiles! We began in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage listed town in the central north. It is possibly one of our favourite places to visit on our trip to date. Luang Prabang somehow manages to successfully mesh the old with the new, the ... read more

Flying from the Philippines to Hanoi Vietnam our preferred destination, proved exorbitantly expensive and also very time consuming. On the other hand, a direct cheap flight to Ho Chi Minh City was easily booked and so our travel plans were re-jigged and we will now be travelling south to north. They say that old habits die hard and in the case of the name of Vietnam’s southern capital, there is no truer statement. It is probably more common to hear the population refer to Ho Chi Minh City as Saigon even though it was renamed in 1975. Regardless of the name you choose, there is no escaping that the city is a wild one. The traffic is simply indescribable. But of course I will try to describe it.....and probably fail miserably to provide some kind of ... read more

We arrived late into Manila airport from Brunei and given our flight to Palawan was very early (in about 6 hours or so), we decided to spend the night at the airport rather than battling the famed Manila traffic and moreover raising our chances of having something bad happen. Manila has a reputation you see. By the time we got on our morning flight we were stuffed. The cold granite floors of the airport might look beautiful but......We were so stuffed in fact that after finally boarding we both slept through an hour of waiting on the runway. The wait was due to a local typhoon that was causing a bit of havoc. We were later told by another traveller that the wind was so strong at one stage that the stairs to the plane were ... read more

We are so close. So why not? I think that would just about sum up why most people visit Brunei Darussalam. I can’t imagine too many jetting in from faraway places just to have a holiday here. Think of Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and other small nations and the same reason will arise. The difference with the aforementioned countries is that they allowed me an easy entry to their countries. Not Brunei though. Australian’s have to pre-arrange a visa for tourism! Germans don’t. French don’t. Not fair I say. What did we ever do to the people of Brunei? Anyway, $5 and 20 minutes later they allowed me to enter because I had a ticket booked to exit in 3 days time and that seemed to make them happy. We only spent 3 days and naturally, you could ... read more

We kicked off our latest back-packing adventure in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This was for 2 reasons: 1) The flight from Frankfurt was one of the cheapest we could find (maybe because it was on September 11 and flying with Gulf Air?) and 2) the big man, Darren Altenhofenburger of 539 Darling Street fame, now lives there and could offer us a great place to stay along with a safe place for us to store most of gear whilst we were travelling. With Mercedes transport for “Mr. Cliff and Christina” organised by “Mr. Darren” we had a very non-back-packing type start to KL. Fair enough really. His apartment is ridiculously large with views (on a nice clear day) that take in amongst other things, the impressive KL city skyline. Our first touristy thing was the following day ... read more

Hello, or as they say here in München...Gruß Gott, which directly translates to "Greeting God". And so to Oktoberfest, the biggest Volksfest (folks festival) in the world. And yes, with it now done and dusted, I can confirm it is...or should I say that I would find it hard to believe there is something bigger out there! It is held on a 100 acre park land only a 10 minute bicycle ride from my apartment. This is an important fact as my apartment happens to be in the centre of Munich. Oktoberfest is simply mind-blowing. It was reported on the last Saturday of the 16 day festival that over 600,000 people were in attendance. Yep....all just in one day (and I wasn't even there...or maybe I was...I can't remember, actually yes I was definitely there......I think). ... read more

God dag! 7 days and 7 days of Norway were ahead of us. Don’t read it again....you have read correctly. If half of a day is “day” and the other half is “night” then yes, we had 7 days and 7 days ahead of us. Put simply it just doesn’t get dark where we were headed and night time as we know it was not going to be with us for at least a week. Having no darkness is pretty much the premier attraction to Norway and indeed all Scandinavian countries at this time of year. Our quest was to reach Nordkapp, the most northerly point on mainland Europe. I kind of make it sound like we were explorers trying to be the first to do it however it was as easy as hiring a car ... read more

Merhaba! And so my travels took me to the gateway of both Europe and Asia. Turkey. A short trip of 2 weeks awaited whilst I patiently waited for Brendan to arrive in Istanbul airport from Australia. Amazingly we were both on time and safely found our way from the airport to our hostel in the northern suburb of Beyoğlu. Before the influence of women was upon us, we had just over 2 days to get a man’s eye view of the city. And so we did. The first night we walked the main shopping strip of Beyoğlu - Siraselviler Caddesi, without buying anything, in fact we didn’t even go in to any of the shops. It was great! We settled into a small cafe near our hostel for a few quiet beers and some male bonding ... read more

So this month has been a rather quiet travelling month by comparison to the past 8 or so but we still managed to keep the “2 or more countries per month visited” thing alive! We took a day trip to Garmish Partenkirchen, the home of the German ski fields in the deep south of the country. Big name yes, and big snow yes. It seems a rich kids hot spot to me and it was very pretty to say the least. The week following our visit GPK was hosting a world cup skiing event so there were plenty of grand stands and fencing and stuff going up. It was good to see the giant ski jump surrounded by grand stands. It gave us an idea of how it would look at the Olympics. Let me tell ... read more
