MINOCQUA-Wisconsin Oh yeah, Wisconsin. Who woulda thought? So I departed the “garden spot” of Yuba City for a family style lake trip with my godparents Pat and Gloria, their kids (Tracey & Stephanie) their spouses (Julie & Michael) and their grandchildren (Sarah 10, Samson 7, and Charley 15 months). So for those of you like me for whom Wisconsin is not on the top of the “must see” list, I think you would be surprised. As you can imagine, I had to get an atlas to locate it, but it was well worth it. I flew from Sacramento into Chicago and hopped a small 30-seater into Wausau, then had a 90-minute drive into the Lakes area. When I say lakes, I literally mean hundreds all linked and connected. It is stunning. We had a lake house ... read more

The YUBA Location: truly middle of nowhere. Reason: Cuz that’s where Alvarez Farms is…. Just outside Yuba City, California is a town called Live Oak. Felicia and Dominica grew up in Live Oak and have 2 houses on their ranch that needed to be emptied, cleaned and yardsaled! Since I could spare the time, I volunteered to help. Mostly though I volunteered because if it were me, I would want to be helped! I wont bore you with the lame details of packing up 50 years and two generations of stuff, except to say…..since the houses have been empty for quite sometime the wildlife had taken over—inside. So in addition to extreme manual labor, heavy lifting, four 40-yard dumpsters and a three-day yard sale, we battled spiders, wasps, mice, rats’ and a snake. Yes, I typed ... read more

NEW YORK CITY Ahhh, the Big Apple! What’s not to love?? The purpose…Food & Theater. Pretty simple really. Felicia, Lindsay and I caught the redeye out of Long Beach and we were off. The Waldorf Astoria was not so thrilled as we arrived before 6:00 a.m. and was even less than willing to actually check us into our room. Instead we wandered around town. Sadly, we decided NOT to go see Tom Cruise tape the Today Show because we figured it would be mayhem. Boy were we right! I think it would have been worth it though if I ‘d known Tom was gonna lose it, go off his meds and rip Matt Lauer a new one for being “glib”. Oh well. After a morning of wandering, we napped in the lobby of the hotel (thinking ... read more

Well, I guess I forgot to tell you about my birthday—so to recap…. Impromptu festivities in Santa Barbara! Which started and ended at the El Encanto Hotel overlooking the beautiful Santa Barbara Harbor. Felic, Ben, Kat & Mark, Kelly, Elizabeth and I all met for cocktails on the patio. Then the ladies and I headed to the Four-Season Biltmore for a delicious 4course dinner. After that, back downtown to meet up with Mattie, Kyle, and Dave for more cocktails and some dancing at the James Joyce. As a bonus I ran into a couple of old friends and we partied late into the night…only to awake to the “fancy “ room service served on the porch swing. Ahh the life! Not bad for 33, huh? JUNE 2005 Sadly, I was sick for a portion of ... read more

May 2005 Upon my return with the boys I spent one day in Santa Barbara. My friend Kerry Lee asked if I could give her a hand and work a wedding in Santa Barbara. It was fun to be that kind of busy, but I don’t really miss “work” all that much! Next on the list was quality time with the kids closer to home. What I mean is as part of my “search for balance program” I wanted to spend time with the kids (Taylor & Casey and Maximus & Odessa). So, my first opportunity was to spend the weekend taking care of Taylor (5 yrs) and Casey (2 yrs) by myself!! Tim and Christina had a nice quiet romantic weekend away from home planned. Well, it was a long weekend, and I am pretty ... read more

APRIL 2005 I was back in SLO just long enough to re-pack and prepare for the next agenda item…Hawaii and Costa Rica in one swoop. This began as an already booked trip with mom and dad to Hawaii (as mom has made it her mission to get to Kona as often as possible to check on the construction of their retirement casa—I think most of you know they are moving next year around March—FYI-they have extra bedrooms and would LOVE the company!!!) Anyway, since my brother Edward could not get time off work, no Aloha for him. Instead, Felicia packed a bag and came along to keep me entertained As usual the big island was slow, but we spent some time in the sun (which you will see as a reoccurring theme in my travels) and ... read more

MARCH 2005 This segment of my life has been deemed “The Summer of Cash & Prizes” (thank you to Jeff Munsey for coining the fabulous phrase!). But frankly the bottom line is….life is short, it should always be summer. Therefore, I quit my “real job” at Sunstone Winery to attempt to take a year off and travel. I don’t really know how many places I will get to, how many frequent flier miles I will log, or how many of you I will really get to see. But I have lofty goals. The purpose of this log is for your entertainment while I attempt to achieve these goals. I can already see that I will not get to nearly all the places that I would like…the money just never goes far enough! However, part of the ... read more
