In planning from Canada, we had emailed the Rockingham Tri-Club and received an enthusiastic response from Josh, the club president. He said to drop by when we arrived and invited us to join in a couple of events. So we grabbed a map, and hopped on the bikes our hosts graciously provided for us. We stopped at an intersection to get our bearings and as we rotating the map a very athletic runner taps Ken on the shoulder and smiles. Welcome to Australia - you must be Ken ! I'm Josh - from Rockingham Tri-Club. We are mildly astonished - these kind of things seem to happen quite often! We tell Josh we were looking for his house. He has finished his 20 km run and invites us to follow him to his house. His wife, ... read more

This afternoon we said "good-bye and see you in a month" to our new Perth friends. Exchanging stories and laughter with Rob and Carol, made for easy recovery from jet-lag. We boarded the sleek Transperth commuter train which whisked us to Rockingham, a city about 8 station stops south of Perth. The Transperth train is somewhat like our Westcoast Express from Vancouver to Mission; the significant difference is the Trans-Perth trains operate all day at 7 - 10 minute intervals and there are other lines to outlying towns. Rockingham is our destination because our campervan awaits us here. We intentionally selected a rental company outside of Perth to avoid driving on the 6-lane Kwinana Freeway. Our strategy is to gain driving confidence - on the opposite side - by starting in a less densely populated area. ... read more

We had a late afternoon stroll with our hosts through King's Park which has a numerous gardens of the indigenous plants and trees of West Australia. Most impressive is the entrance lined with eucalyptus trees welcoming park visitors. As the day faded we watched the moon rise over Perth...still can hardly believe we are here. In 2008, a giant Boab tree was removed from the northern tropical region and transported on a flat bed truck for 7 days traveling over 3,000 km to King's Park in Perth. The construction of a new bridge on the Great Northern Hwy meant the tree had to be relocated and the indigenous people gave it as a gift to the people of Perth. The photos hardly do justice to the majestic dimensions of the Boab. Our hosts took us to ... read more

Our stopover in Melbourne was sufficient to get one night of sleep to begin our adjustment to Australian time and head west to Perth. The 4.5 hour flight from Melbourne to Perth was similar to flying from Montreal to Vancouver. After studying google maps at home we knew our destination would be the south-west tip of West Australia starting from Perth. To put it in perspective it would be like traveling from Vancouver to Jasper, then Banff, and looping back again to our starting point. We received a very warm welcome from our Perth hosts, Carol and Rob. They had done house-sitting in Abbottsford, BC so they knew exactly what cool, rainy conditions we had escaped. On our second night they surprised us with a picnic at a park on the shores of the Swan River ... read more

The First Question we were asked by our Melbourne hosts as we conversed from the airport to their home: So why did you choose Australia? Ken's story: "When I was in grade 10 in Cornwall, Ontario I had a dream to be the top runner in Canada! I started reading the books and new research on running. (circa 1968) The book which captured my imagination was about the runners who trained on the sand dunes of Perth, international names like John Landy, Herb Elliot and Roger Bannister. I vaguely knew the location of Perth and as a teen decided I would go there." Our hosts calmly comment: " do you know John Landy lives across the street from us?" Ken and I exchange glances, "The John Landy who raced Roger Bannister in the 1954 Commonwealth Games ... read more
