My motorcycle trip to Phan Thiet was fabulous. I was very lucky to meet a friend from long ago who wanted to go with me. Thao happened to be in Viet Nam at the same time and had wanted to do a trip like this. All my preparation paid off. The roads we took were nicely paved, went through picturesque villages and skirted the ocean, and best of all, hardly used by trucks or cars. On the way to Phan Thiet, we crossed a ferry, rode into a rubber plantation and watched rubber sap trickle into a collecting bowl. It was amazing to see that people still collected tons of sap by hand into buckets that were carried by honda. What I am packing for my motorcycle trip from Saigon to Phan Thiết: § International driver’s license from AAA § Zip lock bags § Khẩu trang (face mask) § Light long sleeve shirts and khaki pants § Rain suit (not poncho) § Mosquito repellant § Straps for securing bags § Spare parts per mechanic’s suggestions (spark plugs and tire/tubes) § Guidebook: Southern Vietnam on Two Wheels by Wink Dulles Motorcycle: § Lam’s Honda Dream II. This type of motorcycle is prevalent throughout this region. I hope this means spare parts and mechanics are readily available even in remote places. § Tune up before trip. Motorcycling from Saigon to Phan Thiet

I plan to ride a Honda Dream II from Saigon along the coast to Phan Thiết. I love beaches. I often wondered what beaches there are between the 200 km of coast line between the two resort cities of Cấp and Phan Thiet. Cấp (short for Cap St. Jacques) is the pre-1975 name for the city of Vũng Tàu. I tried Google and many travel guides but could not find any such information. My original idea to find such beaches was to hire a boat from Cấp to sail along the coast up north to Phan Thiết. I asked my friends but none was willing to risk such a trip with me.
