On the Home Stretch

After a short sleep yes last night went until 230am but then again we didn't go out for dinner until 11pm so... we got up at 730am to get ready to catch our flight to Heathrow.Airplane travel is so much more civilized than train travel. I know trains are big in Europe and for the most part they're a great way to get around but we're tired of lugging our stuff. Checkin for the plane han

Nice is Nice

Lazily woke up at 10am and headed to Italy for lunch. Yep. Drove to Italy for lunch. It's only a half hour from Gio's to the bordertown Ventimiglia so we let our trusty Italian tour guide lead the way. Naturally the food was great and after lunch we went to an Italian outlet mall where I picked up 2 pairs of Italian leather shoes for 60 euro Amazing. Plus they threw in a cute pair of fl

Ciao Italia

We woke up in Vernazza to a thunderstorm and then the train we needed to get so we could catch our train from Montorosso to Genoa and then to Nice was 55 minutes late note to future travellers Italian trains are notoriously delayed making all our connections impossible to make. It looked like we couldn't leave Italy And as we sat at the Vernazza station waiting for the commuter train to t

Bella Italia Continuoso

Did I mention that when we sleep we keep the windows open and hear the waves crash on the beach when we drift off and when we awake because the sea is literally 30 metres from our room We're going to miss that.Did I mention that we ate at another restaurant last night that was perched high on a cliff and the sea was so rough yesterday that its swirling and crashing was our scenic backdrop We'r

In Full Relaxation Mode

Got another slow start to the day. Partly because I've been fighting a sore throat the past couple of days and am feeling kinda crappy and partly because we're getting into the Italian Riveria lifestyle. It's going to be tough to leave. Being in the Cinque Terra is like being on a vacation while being on a vacation. Our biggest decision is where to wander what to eat go to the beach or swim

Day Tripping in Italy

Today was a late start Didn't leave for Santa Margherita until 1pm guess we're getting into the Ligurian lifestylSanta Margherita is of course beautiful. It's much bigger than the towns we've been in the past few days but no less charming. We really don't think Italy can do any wrong Now back to the notion of S. Margherita being larger. When I say larger keep in mind it only took us a

We're Engaged

After a wonderful dinner last night at a restaurant perched high above on a cliff we headed back down the many steps to find that an Italian band playing Pink Floyd covers had set up by the water. We ordered a bottle of wine yes John and I shared our first bottle of wine ever together and sang along with the band. They were actually pretty good and the crowd was right into it. They wrapped

The Love Affair with Italy Continues

Our first sleep in Vernazza was a little disruptive between the clock tower in front of our window that rings every hour and half hour from 8am to midnight to the late night revellers in Piazza Marconi which our room looks over. Didn't matter though because it would take a lot to change either of our minds about how superb this place is.We took the 3 minute train to Monterosso this morning. It'

Today ended after 7 hours of train travel but the trip was breathtaking. It took us along the Mediterranean coast through Nice Cannes Monte Carlo Genoa San Remo Santa Margharita Rigure to our final desination Vernazza in the Cinque Terre. We had to change trains in Monterossa literally 3 minutes from Vernazza. John personified the Incredible Hulk by jogging with both our 40lbs suitcase

K. We're done with the French For the most part we've been positive and optimistic after all we're visitors to France but we're ready to move on.Tonight we went off the beaten track away again from the restaurants with menus that are both frenchenglish and laminated with pictures of the food they serve.
From Foie Gras to Potty Hole

Today started with a trip to the St. RemydeProvence market. It was fantastic. We thought the vats of olive oil wine cheese tapenades bread fruits and veg were great at AixenProvence but St. Remy's was beautiful. From what we could see the town was soso compared to Gordes Menerbes Lourmarin and Avignon but perhaps we've just been spoiled by those hilltop villages. The droves of loo

We had a wonderful 2 year anniversary celebratory dinner at Le Cours de Louvre which we just happened upon while walking one of the side streets. It was so great from the Kir Royale apperitif to the foie gras appetizer yep 2 nights in a row of foie gras for lil' di and fillet of boeuf seasoned with sea salt from the region and wine to match.
John and I are celebrating 2 years together today and the atmosphere in Avignon is amazing. What a great time to be here. The Festival d'Avignon runs for a whole month every JulyAugust and it's like a gigantic Fringe Festival but....better. There are musician street performers acting street performers weird street performers mute street performers you name it it's here. There is music con

A Challenging Day

We attempted to go to the Cavaillon market this morning en route to Avignon but the parking situation was ugly so we blew it off and detoured our route via Menerbes where Peter Mayle used to live and wrote his famous Provence novels. We've since got scoop that he was driven out of the area by the residents once the books were translated into French bc the locals didn't see his humourous view o

A Night in Gordes

Our instinct was right and there wasn't any internet acces in Gordes so two blogs will follow yesterdays and todays. After packing up and getting our daily crossiant fix at a patisserie in Aix we mapped out our plan of action a must when travelling the back roads of France and started on our way. The 2 lane roads were barely wide enough for one car let alone 2 and the curves and winding la

This morning wandered throughout the old town of AixenProvence and figured out what this Provencal life was all about. It's about taking things easy wandering down narrow streets originally built for horse and carriage and enjoying simple pleasures like good food good wine and pretty flowers. We meandered through the narrow streets of Aix's market this morning croissant in hand and saw f

French Provencal

Left Paris today and headed to Gare de Lyon to catch the TGV train to Avignon. Our train was a few minutes late but whew once we got on we flew. The TGV trains are France's super fast ones so after being on the Eurostar and the TGV the other trains we take are going to seem so slow like the Little Engine That Could Train travel in Europe is very civilized if you discount the dogs and cats o

We took our favourite mode of transport the Batobus to the Le Tour Eiffel this morning. To avoid the hourlong line for the elevator we hiked up the 300 stairs to the first level. John was cool as a cucumber but I must say I felt a tad nauseaus as we ascended the iron staircaseThe view was spectacular as today is sunny with not a cloud in the sky. John convinced me to take the elevator to t

Full Moon Over Paris

There's a full moon tonight which just adds to the magic of Paris at night. We wandered around the St. Germain area again on the hunt for a recommended Italian restaurant but after an hour of getting lost we gave up. Ironically as often happens when you're not looking we found it awhile later. Looking forward to having our last meal in Paris there tomorrow night. Getting lost was fun though

Just another day in Paris

We woke up early and headed to the Louvre before opening to avoid the crowds. Amazingly when we got there 15 minutes early there were already about 300 people waiting to go in. When we finally left a couple of hours later there were about 3 million inside Well maybe a slight exageration but word to the wise go to the Louvre early in the morningWe saw the glassencassed Mona Lisa.
