Tuesday 19th Feb - Day 28 During the tour a number of us talked about doing some ice climbing in the cordillera real; the mountains around La Paz in Bolivia. As we looked around the various tour operators we found it would cost around $80 to spend a day up on a glacier but for a ridiculously cheap $100 (USD) we could do a 3 day expedition to attempt a climb of Huayna Potosi. The three day expedition only suited myself and Mick, (I just had enough time left after the tour), so we signed up for it. When I got back to La Paz after visiting the salt flats on Monday night we had a kitting out session for all the gear and met our guide, Miguel. Between booking up the expedition and the first ... read more
Monday 11th Feb - Day 20 Drove to La Paz, the capital of Bolivia and the highest capital city in the world. We had to cross the border from Peru which was an unusual experience and not one I would've liked to have done without our guide Mike to look after us. As soon as we stepped out of the bus before the corssing some decisively shadding looking individuals were being a bit too friendly trying to offer us help who we were told to ignore, then we had to go into three different random buildings with absolutely no signs on them where we got our passports stamped and some immigration slips. After this we changed our currency and crossed the border over a bridge where we had to enter another building for more stamps. Throughout ... read more
Wednesday 6th Feb - Day 15 Kris and myself went white water rafting today, there were only the two of us on the raft and the guide so we had to work our butts off to stay in the right part of the river, very exhilarating and very hard work at this altitude. It was a grade 4+. We got back to Cusco in the evening for big night out to celebrate Glenns birthday. Thursday 7th Feb - Day 16 Free day in Cusco exploring the city Friday 8th Feb - Day 17 A very long drive to Puno, about 11 hours or so. There were carnival celebrations on all through the night and a huge foam fight that we joined in on. Saturday 9th Feb - Day 18 We headed out to lake titicaca, the ... read more
Tuesday 5th Feb - Day 14 Machu Picchu day! Up at 4.30am to get to Machu Picchu before the crowds. Had a 2 hour tour of the ruins and then scambled up HuaynaPicchu to get fantastic view of the site. After this time was running out so I had to run to the Inca bridge (the incans destroyed the bridge to protect Machu Pichhu) and the sun gate. When the spaniards conquered the incans in about 1537 they didn´t find Machu Picchu, it lay undiscovered until 1911. I´ve seen so many photos of this site but it was still amazing to go there. ... read more
