I am currently on a gap year and will be travelling in South America for 3 and a half months starting on 17th February with my best mate Alex, visiting Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru, where we will be flying home from Lima on 30th May

The Inka Jungle Trail Day 1 After a very early start as predicted we were all packed up and were soon off on our way in a minibus with our group to start the 4 day Inka Jungle Trail. After a pitstop for snacks in Ollantaytambo and meeting our guide Silvio, and chatting to some fellow northern lads, Liam and Julian, we continued along the windy road up through the mountains. A couple of hours later we arrived at our start point, Abra Malaga (4600m above sea level). Here the bikes we would be riding that day were taking off the roof of the minibus and we tested them for 10 minutes or so, getting used to them and fixing any problems anyone had. We then got started and speeded down the mountain roads, with hairpin ... read more

Sucre After one or two more lazy days in Sucre we found out that some of the strikes were starting to get violent with tear gas, riot police and injuries. However, we did manage to watch a local football match: Universitario (Sucre) vs San Jose (Oruro). After cladding ourselves in the local teams kit for about 3 pounds we watched our team go down 1-0 despite clearly being the better team on the pitch! The match was hugely enjoyable though with a good atmosphere and afterwards we headed for a pizza and then back to the hostel, where we met two girls in the kitchen making soup out of the hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus! Not sure how nice that would have been! We then took a flight to La Paz from Sucre for about 38 pounds ... read more

Day 45: A fantastic day horse-riding on the ranch with Janni! Got up at 7am to leave at 8 from the office in town but a mix-up with the minibus and a very long drive meant we didn't get started until about midday. My horse, Mio (mine in Spanish) was huge but great to ride, very calm and quick! The scenery was stunning, like a postcard, and so overall it was a very good day! Day 46:Quite a lazy day today as still tired from yesterday. We we explored the huge park (250 hectares) about 15 blocks from the city centre which was really pretty and had a very friendly atmosphere. We then went to a fairly posh street next to Plaza Independencia for a drink and then in the evening we were all pretty tired ... read more

The asado was actually rearranged to the next night, because it meant that Konrad would be able to come out which was great! Before the meal we spent the day sampling Bariloche's famous chocolate - fantastic until I ended with a pretty disgusting liquor! We then picked up some flowers and cupcakes for the Baileys and settled down to write postcards. As seems to happen far too often Alex´s lateness meant we missed the bus and so we took a taxi to the Bailey household where we were greeted by Ponky who we were very glad to see as he had gone walkabout the day before, and round there the dogs never usually come back. We were then driven by Julie to the asado where we were joined by a very tired Konrad who had been ... read more

On the second night at the casino, after a couple of bottles of 9 peso wine (about 1 pound fifty each!) that was surprisingly nice, we came away with 440 pesos between us! We were very happy indeed as it paid for our accomadation and food for the next day as well as the bus fare to Chalten! However, the subsequent lack of sleep and very bumpy bus ride along Ruta 40 were not great for two hungover and tired travellers! We arrived at Chalten at about 1pm, looked around for a hostel, found one and went to sleep! We were up at 6am the next day after a very good night´s sleep, hoping to be able to do some ice trekking on Glacier Grande near El Chalten, having been told to be there at 6.45. ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate March 15th 2011

Bought our bus tickets to Rio Gallegos in Bariloche, where we would then get a transfer to Calafate. So we set off from Bariloche at 5.15pm with a hamper of food given to us by Julie after we learnt there was no food on the bus! We arrived at 10am the next day in Caleta Olivia, a small seaside town that was the South American equivalent of Morecambe! A 5 hour or so wait was enjoyed by a refreshing dip in the sea (first swim in the South Atlantic!) and watching Italy beat France in the 6 Nations, what a result! It was then back onto a bus and off we went, reaching Rio Gallegos at 1.30am on Sunday. We then found out that the next bus to Calafate wasn't until 9.15 and a night in ... read more

Day 15: After another day at school and our brains overfilled with Spanish we headed to a local restaurant called Alberto´s with fellow students Jan (IRE), Daphne (HOL) and Belen (DEU). I had a huge (and I mean huge!) lasagne stuffed with egg, bolognese, ham and peperroni for just 35 pesos, about 6 pounds, and the company was great with a lot of banter flying around! That night we headed to a local bowling alley which was shorter than those back home and then played pool (I´m winning the trip series 5-4 so far!), then met up with Jonny, Amos, Will and Harry (all ENG) in their hostel for a drink or two. All was fine until Alex came in about an hour after me at 3am, triggering a ridiculously loud house alarm that woke everyone ... read more

Hola chicos and chicas, It has been a fantastic start to Patagonia here in San Carlos de Bariloche. We arrived about an hour or so late from Iguazu after two buses, the third of which (from Buenos Aires to here) was the best so far, it even had a vegetarian option for Alex, surprising in this nation of carnivores, some of whom eat meat three times a day! We were greeted by Konrad (he doesn´t like being called Uncle!) at the bus station which is just out of the ciy centre and drove about 3 kilometres to his house, where I met Julie and Nils for the first time in about 14 years! After a lunch of empanadas (yum!) we had a tour of the house and garden which are both fantastic, but the best ... read more

All I can say is wow! The Iguazu Falls were absolutely incredible! Definately the most impressive waterfalls I´ve ever seen in my life! The sound of them was overwhelming and the amount of water falling every second was unbelievable! You can easily see why they put a HEP station on the Brazilian side of the falls (the biggest in the world except for the 3 Gorges Dam in China). The only problem was the amount of tourists, literaaly crawling like ants all over the National Park, but I think today was a fairly good day numbers-wise becuase it rained most of the day! I still managed to get a little bit sunburnt though! The falls themselves are split into two, and i think the slightly more impressive side was the Devil´s throat, where you cannot see ... read more

We left Buenos Aires at 3.00pm yesterday, sad to say goodbye to our brilliant host Chelsea, and a city we both liked, mainly because of its laid back attitude and great variety of sights and things to do. Some of the highlights include the sense of freedom; trying empanadas for the first time; seeing the colourful houses of the district of La Boca painted from paint leftovers in shipyards, also one of the poorest areas of BA; the market in San Telmo that sold everything from fruit and veg to jewellry to antiques and to fake Ray Bans; and meeting some very drunk argentines at Chelsea´s local bar who tried to persuade us to rise up against the queen! We arrived today in Puerto Igauzu (Northeast Argentina on the border with Brazil and Paraguay) at around ... read more
