Well the final day of our trip has come. We spent the night in Corsicana. When in Corsicana, you have to make the trip to the Collins Street Bakery. I always thought that the only thing you could buy there was fruit cakes. Boy was I wrong. We bought a pecan pie, an assortment of cakes (including their world famous fruit cake), and some goodies to eat on the road. If you’ve never been there, it’s worth trip. Collins Street Bakery also has two branch locations: a second location in Corsicana and one in Waco. Speaking of Waco, we continued our trip (after eating our car snack from the bakery) and arrived in Waco in time for lunch. It has been a while since we ate at the Cracker Barrel. In fact, we had not eaten ... read more

We spent the night in Tyler and were just a hop, skip and jump from our next stop, Kilgore. Our time in Kilgore was a high water mark of this road trip as we saw some old friends. If you ever had anything to do with the plumbing industry (I did), you can’t think of Kilgore, TX without thinking of Kilgore Ceramics. Kilgore Ceramics was a major plumbing manufacturer in Texas that had distribution throughout Texas and the United States for years. The company got its start in the late '40s and was ultimately sold to Armitage Shanks of England in the ‘80s and later to Mansfield Plumbing. I have served on the on the board of Mo-Ranch, a Presbyterian retreat facility in Hunt, TX, for about a year. One of my fellow board members is ... read more

We packed up and got on the road, first stop Longview. I have wanted a donut for days. When we hit the Longview city limits, there was no sign of a Krispy Kreme, but we found the Donut King! Now on to our first destination of the day, a historical marker at the First National Bank. Not a lot to see but this is the location of a bloody gunfight when the Dalton Gang robbed the bank in 1894. We next headed for Jacksonville and the Old Jacksonville Cemetery. Some of you may know about my connection to the Cokers. My grandmother, Fannie May DeKunder, was a Coker. My great great great grandmother, Malinda Brown Coker died in Cherokee County in 1853 and is buried there. Her husband, my great great great grandfather Joseph Coker then ... read more

We got started early and headed for Caddo Lake State Park. Lots to see there. With some time to kill before the boat tour, we did some hiking in the woods. On the hike, we came across a pavilion built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) in the 1930’s. It was still in pretty good shape! We had time for a snack before the boat tour (road trips are hard work and you must stay well nourished!) The tour was really amazing. Caddo Lake is loaded with wildlife. We saw a blue heron, several egrets and fortunately, no alligators! We then got back in the car and headed for Jefferson. Our tour guide at Caddo Lake had told us about a great BBQ place in Jefferson, Joseph’s Riverport BBQ. After we topped off our tanks, we ... read more

We packed up and got on the road. I thought I would give the Texas State Railroad one last chance so we drove through Rusk on the way to Marshall. The train runs between Palestine and Rusk (when it runs). The depot was deserted and we decided not to wait until Saturday night to see if anyone showed up. Too bad, maybe next time. We then headed to Carthage. On the way into town, we passed a sign with information about the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. What a delightful museum. I would not call myself a big country music fan but I can recall in the 50’s when radio stations played all kinds of music and there was no distinction between rock and roll and country. They played it all. But back to the ... read more

We began the day with a 3 mile walk/run on the LaNana Creek trail, which amazingly, runs along LaNana Creek. After breakfast at the Olde Towne General Store, we headed back to the hotel to shower, pack and head for Palestine. We had not yet realized it but we had already enjoyed the best part of the day. After we got our bags packed and were ready to load the car, I went to the elevator to go downstairs to get the luggage cart. To make a long story short (too late!), it turns out the elevator was down for maintenance. So Kay and I had to lug our bags down 5 flights of stairs. We got some help from an employee of the hotel and we were grateful. We got to Palestine and found out ... read more

Most of the things we wanted to see were within walking distance of our hotel, the Hotel Fredonia , a treasure in itself. We liked the place so well we decided to stay a second night. The first stop of the day was the Oak Grove Cemetery. Some of you know that I am a cemetery buff. Although I am not yet ready to take up residence, I truly enjoy visiting old historic cemeteries. Oak Grove is one of those. It is the final resting place for a number of legendary Texans, including four signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Kay & I spent about an hour looking at markers and taking in the history. Our next stop was the Sterne-Hoya Museum and Library. The young lady on duty, Miranda, had recently graduated from SFA ... read more

We began our day in Huntsville celebrating 41 happy years of marriage (41 out of 42 isn’t bad!) It somehow seemed appropriate to be celebrating an anniversary in Huntsville? Our first stop of the day was the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. There is a wonderful exhibit running through the end of August: J. Griffis Smith's Texas: A Retrospective through the Lens and Images from Texas Highways. If you get a chance to see this exhibit, do it. It is a wonderful exhibition of Smith’s work on the covers of the Texas Highways magazine over the last 25 years. Also, there are many other things to see at the museum. I encourage you to click on the link below and take the “Virtual Tour” to have a look. Sam Houston Memorial Museum A Trip to Huntsville would ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Brenham May 31st 2011

We left Austin yesterday headed for Huntsville. Our first stop along the way was where else? Brenham and Blue Bell! I love to do factory tours. I have seen lots of stuff made: toilets, tubs, water heaters, beer, Fritos, ice cream. My preference is food manufacturing as they have better samples at the end of the tour (although beer is a close second.) Kay & I have been on Ben& Jerry’s tour and Blue Bell’s tour. Blue Bell wins hands down. The people are friendlier and you can actually see the manufacturing process. This was actually our second tour of Blue Bell. The plant is undergoing expansion with and a new enlarged visitor’s center. If you ever get within 100 miles of Brenham, go take the tour! Blue Bell also offers tours of their Oklahoma and ... read more

We left home yesterday and headed north to Austin. (Yes, I know this is supposed to be an East Texas road trip.) As some of you may know, my birthday was Saturday. Sunday was the best time to get together to celebrate. We met at Joe’s duplex at 6:00 planning to drive to Matt’s El Rancho for dinner. Unbeknownst to me, the guys had made plans for Andy to bring his limo (Andy drives limousines in Austin) and take us all over to Matt’s. What a wonderful surprise and what a wonderful evening. More tomorrow!... read more
