I am again in Kathmandu, against my will :) I was supposed to fly to a town called Bhadrapur on Wednesday Dec 10th and then take a bus up to Ilam (where the hospital is) but due to "roadblocks" in the east my flight was postponed until Friday. Today is Friday and I am still here, my flight was again postponed until Monday. So fingers crossed I will get out of here soon. I'm ready to settle into Ilam and do some work and have some sort of semblance of a "home" at least for a month. Back to what's been going on...... I left you last in Pokhara, when I had finished with my trekking and was searching for a relaxing yoga/meditation place to hang for a little bit before returning to hectic Kathmandu. I ... read more

Nov 12th: We hiked a full morning mid-way up the hill on the south side of the valley on our way to the village of Lapa. As I began reading "The Snow Leopard" by Peter Matthiessen his description of the first days of their trek north of Pokhara fit our walk perfectly (minus the rain, our weather was beautiful). The farmers we walked by were tilling with primitive tools and their buffalo, women were thrashing the millet on straw mats, children were playing and happy, shouting "Namaste!" as we passed. This day I was in the middle of the pack, and able to walk by myself for a long time along the terraces of millet and rice, which was really nice. This was definitely the idyllic scene of farming in the foothills of the Himalayas. Mills ... read more

Well hello and sorry for a long overdue entry! It's been difficult to find time and inexpensive internet until now...in Pokhara, a major tourist haven and gateway to the Annapurna's. So let me rewind and go from the start...I will get better at writing more frequently so I don't have to write about 20-some very interesting days each time! I arrived in Kathmandu on Nov 3rd after an 18 hour flight from LA to Bangkok, and then another 4 hours or so from Bangkok to Kathmandu. The views of the Himalayas from the airplane were stunning, I couldn't believe I was actually going to be hiking amongst them soon. I arrived on the same flight as one of the internists in the group, so after passing through customs (not much security here) we walked out into ... read more

Hello friends! This is my first entry for my blog on my upcoming travels. I will be leaving the country on Saturday Nov 1st from Atlanta-Los Angeles-Bangkok-Kathmandu, Nepal! When I arrive in Kathmandu I am meeting up with the rest of my group (4-5 physicians and a few RN's) and our coordinators from Himalayan Healthcare. After a couple of days of orientation we head off for a medical trek to the Dhading region of the Ganesh Himals (the Himalayas) which I believe is not too far from the border with Tibet. We will be setting up temporary clinics for a few days at a time in a couple of small villages. This trek is two weeks in length. Upon returning to Kathmandu I will be getting a few things in order then heading over to Ilam, ... read more
